Black Rock City comes together beautifully on this 66th day before the burn. Larry Harvey and Maid Marian have returned from their adventure in the UK, where they met many burners and Larry gave a well-received speech at Oxford Union for an audience of interested listeners. Crimson’s been visiting US firespinners to coordinate the Fire Conclave, and various volunteer trainings continue in SF and all over the US.

We had a wonderful visit from NY Regional Contacts Lady Merv and Q this week, who, like many regions, are gearing up for pre-burn events in their area – AND planning their container for shipping NY Burner gear to the playa (see REGIONALS CORNER for more info!) Rangers are seeking… rangers, and it’s time to register your theme camps.

And next Saturday is the Flambé Lounge! I’m trying to keep the puns to a minimum here, but can’t resist saying that the fact that it’s halfway through June already is beyond belief…

2003 PLAYA CALENDAR ONLINE

Greetings Playagoers and Playa Party Planners!

The Burning Man Playa Calendar, which becomes the “What, Where, When on the Playa” Guide you get at the gate, has been wiped clear for 2003 and is officially ready for your Playa Events! We took some time to improve the calendar tool for your convenience and we hope you enjoy it. Use the Playa Calendar to submit your playa event for entry into the Guide, so that everyone knows What, Where and When about your event. Please fill out the entry as completely as possible, in case we want to get back to you with some silly questions. Yes, it is true that you cannot edit your own events (we found that people messed with other people’s events), so try to get it right the first time. The URL to visit for this year’s Playa Calendar is:

burningman.com/calendar/playa

If you have any problems or questions, the address to email is playacal-admin. Ready, set, GO! You have until July 20th before we go to press!

WHO NEEDS THE MOON WHEN YOU’VE GOT SUN

Sparks writes:

“The price of commercial solar-recharged landscape lights fell this spring. You can now go to Home Depot and buy a box of eight lights for $37.00 (Malibu, 8-Pack Solar Powered Tier Lights, Model: #LZ1-8-24, SKU: #343620). Home Depot also sells these lights through their web site.

To inspire people to modify the Malibu lights into art lights, I’ve created a series of web pages which show how to disassemble the lights and modify them three different ways: blinkyredthings.org/HVPL/index.html

With it being moonless and dark this year, these lights will help burners light up their camp easily, inexpensively, and without needing a lot of batteries. And it’s not hard to convert them into something creative too.

Sparks Hushville Power and Light

P.S. I don’t work for Home Depot and only recommend them because they were an inexpensive, easy source for the lights. I’m sure other home improvement warehouse stores carry the same lights or similar.”

ROGUETRIP

Waffen and DoomKty are planning to do a month long tour of the good old USA in ROGUE, Waffen’s Thunderdome art car. They are looking for kind-hearted burners or like minded folks who would be interested in showing them around their city of residence and/or putting us up for a night. They’re hoping to have a great trip and meet some good people along the way.

Says Waffen: “We’ll be leaving the Black Rock Desert on July 5th, 2003 and plan to roughly follow the itinerary listed on our site: darkfortressstudios.com/RogueTrip. If you live in or near any of our planned stops, are going to be around during July and feel like helping us out, please contact us! We’re also interested in suggestions for things to do and see, particularly interesting/unique items and clubs. …So if you know any of these cities and have suggestions, send them our way!

You can contact Waffen at: RogueTrip03
RogueTrip03@hotmail.com or DoomKty at DoomKty242.
We look forward to meeting you!

HAMMER FOR JUSTICE

This gem culled from the Burning Man staff email list: a build-it-yourself rebar hammer, guaranteed to get your structure up and get you out on the playa in no time. It comes courtesy of Mr Wizzard of Camp Lite Brite AKA Nick Donaldson. Get all the info you need at litebrite.org/rebarhammer

JRS plea: If you’re gonna hammer that sucker in, please PLEASE remember to bring a way to pull it back out. Stakes of rebar left behind are a huge hazard, and leaving even one (“But I just couldn’t get it out and I wanted to go home!”) in the playa can’t fly. Take a course in Rebar 101 at burningman.com…rebar.html.

BLR, 32, SEEK R

Hey y’all, We need rangers! More importantly, we need Black Rock Citizens who are willing and able to serve the community in the capacity of a Black Rock Ranger. If you have been to Burning Man for a few years, and have often found yourself doing more than one of the following things listed below, you might already be a ranger and not even know it yet:

-Helping people
-Patiently listening to silliness & enjoying it
-Doing first aid
-Bringing balance to discussions & situations
-Mediating disputes
-Resolving conflicts, and talking people down
-Solving problems without losing your sense of humor
-Running safety perimeters for burns & pyro
-Building consensus in the community

Maybe you don’t need no stinkin’ badges, or the shirt, or radio; but we need you. The community needs you, if you’ve got the heart, and the skill, and the will. If your intention is to be a badass, please volunteer for a different department. If your intention is to swagger about and/or be a hall monitor, please do not volunteer for any department. If your intention is to serve the community by working long hours to help address some of the larger safety concerns in a non-confrontational, discreet, and almost anonymous manner, then please sign up for ranger training.

The Black Rock Rangers (rangers.org) ride the edge of chaos. Rangers have been making reasonable excuses for your behavior since 1992. The Rangers are mediators and providers of information, devoted to public safety and the quality of participant experience. Rangers also serve as a buffer between the participants and outside agencies. If you have specific questions about the Black Rock Rangers please email: rangers

All ranger applicants must attend a training, and then work a mentor shift with experienced Black Rock Rangers before becoming a ranger.

Try this url for the trainings:
rangers.burningman.com/calendar.html

Here is the url for signing up:
rangers.burningman.com/signup2.html

After signing up, please place $2 in a coffee can and bury it in your backyard. Tell no one. One of our agents will contact you. 😉

FINDING ZOOPLANKTON

Participant Susan Robb writes: “I am desperately looking for images, video, and sound recordings from my 2002 theme art project You Are My Zooplankton- Come Closer (aka Jelly Fish Dinner Theater). THE LIST, THE LIST, THE LIST IS ON WIRE

Sebbo writes: I’m writing to announce that I’m starting up a mailing list for people interested in working with electroluminescent wire. I’ve gotten the amazing Lenny Jones to sign on, so there’ll be at least one expert on hand to answer all the questions we newbies have as we explore the medium.

REGIONAL REPORT FROM FLIPSIDE AND FIREFLY

Jonno had this to say about regional burns of the groups in Austin and Boston!

“Burning Flipside in Texas featured a large and dynamic cadre of firespinners, a dramatic burn and an impressive variety of music. Flipside managed to create the magic that you feel while walking the playa at night and being groped by sound from every direction. Among the dynamic daytime performances were a swashbuckling bald man contest, synchronized swimming with an authentic mermaid and crustacean merman, and wriggly bouts of oil wrestling. This must become an Olympic sport!

Compared to the 1,000 at Flipside, the Boston Burners’ inaugural Firefly was a more intimate get-together in the back woods of New Hampshire. It sold out at 175, the capacity of the privately-owned property, which included a small stream and a lodge with bunkrooms, although nearly everyone tent-camped. Firefly’s $15 admission fee included three vegan meals for the weekend event, some whimsical daytime activities and two musical stages for Saturday night, each with plenty of amps and memorable lighting setups … One “stage: included 4-5 projectors onto 8×20 foot vertical screens that billowed like sails; flashing spotlights of many colors; rotating, reflective balls hung 18 feet above the forest clearing and a fog machine. Jon Payne brought the sweat lodge that you’ve seen on the playa for the last couple of years, plus a big horse-watering trough that he has converted to a wood-fired hot tub. Firefly was conceived as a fundraiser for the shared truck that transports Boston-area burners equipment to the playa. For more info, check the website at chaoshacker.org.
