JRS VOLUME #7; ISSUE #40
JRSV7:#40:07.18.03
The sun shines down on our excited little burner heads today as we realize we can almost taste the playa dust from here (and some of us really ARE tasting it as the DPW folk are already sweating it out up there in NV – send them a good thought, won’t you?) 43 days to the playa and we’re scrambling around getting it all done. How are your plans going?
As you begin to get excited about the art this year, we encourage you to parlay that enthusiasm into helping out with projects on their way to the event. David Best, a perennial favorite of many a burner, is returning to the playa with the Temple of Honor, and he can use your help to make it a reality. See below for information on how to help by obtaining your very own limited-edition monoprint of his beautiful sketch for the Temple – yours when you join the Black Rock Arts Foundation, for a limited time.
What else are we excited about? Oooh, my friends, Reverend Billy. I’ve been so excited about this performance project that I’ve been practicing my “Hallelujahs!” in front of the mirror ever since the moment it came to my attention. Everyone’s got their ball of wax, as they say… and this, well, it SPEAKS to me, ladies and gentlemen. I say, “WOW,” and I mean it. Can’t wait to enjoy these shows with all of you in BRC and bask in the glory.
Tonight you’ll find me (decked out in, ahem, red PVC, of course) at the Fire Garden event, firegarden.org. Come on by and say hi if you’re in SF tonight.
As always, this JRS there are projects afoot, like the fun Café Décor party here at Burning Man world HQ tomorrow… come by and play with panties (!) and cut, paint, and craft yourself into a burning tizzy. There’s a shot at the last word on ziptop bags, an invitation to see “Confessions of a Burning Man” in Sonoma County, and regional events, including a fun fun fun gathering in the South SF Bay.
Head on down the page now and see what we’re talkin’ about. Praise… something!
Today’s JRS tip, right from the Rabbit herself after the BLM cooperator’s meeting on Thursday 7/17/03: Don’t take the back road from Winnemucca to the Black Rock Desert (aka: Jungo Rd). No services, no emergency vehicles, lots of sharp rocks, not fun to breakdown here in 100 degree weather. Trust us. This is NOT a short cut! Read your Survival Guide.

BE A PILLAR OF SUPPORT FOR DAVID BEST’S TEMPLE OF HONOR
Help Build the Temple of Honor and support both the art of David Best and the mission of the Black Rock Arts Foundation! Read on.
David Best has for many years created large-scale interactive art installations on and off the playa. His communal approach to art making, whether manifested in astounding art cars or inspirational architecture, is very much in the spirit of Burning Man. His temples, in particular, have become focal points of our community with participants each year helping to build and decorate them as moving tributes to those who have passed away. For many, they have become communal monuments to the spirit of giving and the positive impact people make on one another’s lives.
This year David Best will create his grandest temple yet! The Temple of Honor will be dedicated to the passage of spirits; and participants will be invited to bring relics and create inscriptions on its walls to give tribute to the lives of lost loved ones. It promises to be the most intricate and beautiful temple David has ever created. As was the case with the Temple of Tears and Temple of Joy, it will be ceremonially burned on the seventh night of Burning Man.
BUT FIRST IT MUST BE BUILT!
We need your help! Due to the magnitude of this installation and related off-playa projects, David needs to raise funds above and beyond what Burning Man is able to provide. Support David’s upcoming project by becoming a member of the Black Rock Arts Foundation. For a limited time, new and returning members of the Foundation will receive a beautiful limited-edition monoprint made by David at Trillium Press while supporting his art and the Black Rock Arts Foundation’s mission. There has never been a better time to become a member of our non-profit organization dedicated to the support of year-round civic-minded and community-forging interactive art.

A SERMON FROM REVEREND BILLY
This year New York performance artist Reverend Billy – revbilly.com – will have a presence on the playa, and his Stop Shopping Gospel Choir will perform nightly at the Man. He sends you this message:
Inflammatory sermon for Burners from Reverend Billy
Greetings from the Church of Stop Shopping. Perhaps it has come time to wander across the desert in the biblical fashion and GO TO CHURCH! We will worship Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the 27th, 28th and 29th, on the stage at the Great Temple, which is a mixed stew of superior beings this year. The Fabulous Monsters (also known as the Monkey Gods of Los Angeles) will grace the stage on Friday the 29th at 10 PM and there are myriad installations and goings-on inside the neo-Mayan pyramid beneath the Man.
The sermon and the songs of the Stop Shopping Gospel Choir keep changing according to mood-swings and ancient curses. Wednesday the theme is “Belief Beyond Money;” Thursday is “Belief Beyond America;” Friday is “Belief Beyond God.” We’ll step out from Center Camp Café on opening night, gathering there at 6:30 with the drums, and the congregation will walk to the Temple of Honor after our “God” show on the last night.
“Beyond Belief” is an amazing theme. It is Larry Harvey’s thoughtful gift but also — it is forced on us by events. Believers are warring with each other around the world. It’s bonkers. We look forward to looking for solutions in the humor and genius of hundreds of temples and reverends and angels and satans on the playa this year.
Wanna sing? There will be a second volunteer choir, the Playa Choir-ya – we’ll bring extra robes or maybe you can make your own (golden-colored with purple trim, but who’s counting?) A website with animations to help you learn the gospel gestures is in the works but isn’t up yet. We ask for good singers, some experience? — but then of course everyone in a kundalini-flashing holy bop is singing or gasping elegantly anyway. Amen.
If you’re interested joining the Playa Choir-ya, contact DeaconInferno.
PS: One of the shows, “Belief Beyond Money” will be staged in New York to raise money. Is that a contradiction? The full choir and band will fulminate. Where: St. Mark’s Church at 10th and 2nd Ave in the East Village. When: Wednesday the 23rd, 8:30 PM. Tickets at Revbilly.com. Strange-a-luliah!

NIGHT SKY UPDATE
Texas Marshall writes with something else to look for in the sky this year: NOCTILUCENT CLOUDS. From SpaceWeather.com: Look west just after sunset any evening this summer. If you see luminous blue-white tendrils spreading across the sky, you’ve probably spotted a night-glowing or “noctilucent” cloud.
Noctilucent clouds (NLCs) are puzzling. They’re inside Earth’s atmosphere, but just barely; at an altitude of 80 km, NLCs are near the edge of space. Some scientists think they’re seeded by meteoroids. Others suspect they’re a telltale sign of global warming.
Although noctilucent clouds appear most often at high latitudes–e.g. places like Scandinavia and Canada–they have been sighted as far south as Colorado and Utah in recent years.
This month some readers have reported seeing a good number of these clouds. Visit spaceweather.com to browse a gallery of their images and to learn how to spot the clouds yourself.
Note: NLCs are a summertime phenomenon, which means this alert applies to sky watchers in the northern hemisphere where it is currently summer. The photo gallery, however, may be enjoyed by readers from either hemisphere.

IT IS ART! JOHNNY ON THE SPOT INSTALLATION FEATURED ON DUCHAMP WEBSITE
Beyond Belief theme art project Johnny on the Spot is now featured on the home page of the official Marcel Duchamp website. The project is the work of Ani Weinstein and Saul Melman of Brooklyn, NY, and will be sited in the Wholly Other, the deep playa beyond David Best’s Temple of Honor.
The artists have created the largest-ever replica of Marcel Duchamp’s readymade sculpture, Fountain, which shocked and outraged the art world in 1917 when he hung it in a gallery and called it art. To learn more about this project, go to marcelduchamp.net and click on Johnny on the Spot.

PLAYASOUND.ORG WANTS YOUR VOICES!
Volunteers needed to assist Playasound.org to document BM2K3.
The idea is simple: Playasound will host an online collection of audio recordings of art installations, interviews and events from the Burning Man Festival 2003. The content will be recorded at various times of the day or night and uploaded live from the event.
The audio on this website will be accompanied by pictures, acting as visual signposts, to help form a mental image of what you hear. We hope to use basic digital recording equipment and editing software on this project.
How you can help Playasound: We also need to hear from people who would like to be our roving reporters or commentators. We’ll arm you with a mic and MiniDisc recorder, all you need to do is talk about what you see as you wander around the playa.
If you’d like to lend your voice, send an email to voices

MORE DUST STRATEGIES
Lotus the Trash Bitch sez: We save the clear, zippered, plastic bags that blankets, sweaters, sheets etc. are sold in. We put them in with our camping gear and use them year after year to store and transport clothing, towels, flags and any other fabric stuff we need at BM. Not only are they getting recycled this way but they are larger and sturdier than regular ziplocs and the zippers are easier to open and close.
AND
In some cases you may want to use Tupperware instead of zip-lock baggies. They are totally reusable, and come in a buttload of sized to fit all your needs. They are washable, and you can use them for other things while on the playa (like eating out of, storing garbage, storing used things) or when you get back to your non-BRC home. They last a lot longer than zip-lock, and are probably harder to loose on the playa (they a bit heavier so they wont fly away quite as easily as baggies.)
