Jrs V09 I01

JRS VOLUME #9; ISSUE #01

JRS:V9:#1:09.22.04

…aaaaaand (drumroll!) welcome to Volume 9 of the Jack Rabbit Speaks!

That means nine seasons of bringing you the news of BRC and the Burning Man community. Ready for another round?

(Deep exhalation, right?) So, here we are – dutifully back in our seats at our desks, our minds still reeling (and, at least here, our inboxes near to bursting). I just returned to San Francisco two nights ago, myself — and I don’t know where my toothbrush is, everytime I move anything it kicks up playa dust, and I have an incredible urge to throw away everything I own except my camping gear and my cowboy hat. (BTW, a tip for cleaning playa off your stuff: vinegar and water cuts the dust right proper.)

So what to do now? Decompress, baby. That slow process wherein we regain our composure, put our watches back on, and try to remember how to resist the urge to give presents to every random stranger we meet on the bus (not that that would be a bad thing, actually…if you don’t mind being looked at like you’re purple). And then, we get together and share stories and photos and attempt to touch that BRC feeling again at Decompression events everywhere…and share it with our hometown friends who couldn’t come to the desert!

We know a few dates for certain: Wisconsin’s got an event at the BurningSNOW center this Friday (info below); Los Angeles will have another stellar Decompression street fair on October 16th (more info soon); Arizona rocks for three days on October 8-10, as does San Diego on October 29-31…on and on and on. (Not on your local list to hear about these great events? Visit http://regionals.burningman.com , click your location, and get plugged in!) We’ll post announcements for all these events as they are sent to us, but your local list is the best place to hear about any events in your area – due to space constraints (either at venues, or in this newsletter) not every announcement ends up sent to us at the JRS, and we don’t want you to miss out on your chance to participate!

So what about the big Decompression weekend here in SF? Sure, many of us do live in the Bay Area, but we also know of participants who come from LA, Reno, San Diego, Arizona…heck, all the way from New York to participate in the San Francisco Decompression “Heat the Street” Fair – this year it’s on Sunday, October 10 – and get this! There’s a whole weekend of Burning Man fun to go along with it. Ready?

Well, since you asked… first, as we all know, BlackTop City *IS* you and me; therefore, we’ve got the full skinny and a CALL FOR DECOMPRESSION PARTICIPATION, below. And since you’re in the Bay Area, why not head down to Santa Cruz on Saturday for the 3rd Annual BURNING MAN FILM FESTIVAL at the Rio Theater, brought to you by Burning Beach? This great event is filled with Burning Man sights and sounds — it includes films by participant/filmmakers that you won’t see anywhere else and a few special premieres of brand new films — and will get you in the perfect frame of mind for the big event the next day! Still looking for more fun? How about a sneak preview party on Friday night for the finished cut of “Beyond Black Rock”, by Gone Off Deep?

Save the dates, leave the dust on your playawear, and hit all three great events – you’ll have a full weekend of Burning Man-ness to coast you through at least three of the 344 days until we meet again!

Read on, go forth, and decompress! We’ll have all the post-event news later this week…

Third Annual Burning Man Film Festival, Saturday, October 9 at Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz

What motivates 35,000 people to brave searing heat, freezing cold and hurricane-force winds to build a city of art in the middle of a desert each Labor Day week? Find out that and more at the third annual Burning Man Film Festival on Saturday, Oct. 9 at the Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz.

This year’s lineup includes Chuck Cirino’s “Burning Man ’97”, filmmakers Dadara and Jesse Limmen’s “Fall and Rise of the Fools Ark” the story of an art piece built in 2003 and burned in the Black Rock Desert, “AstroBlaze”, a piece on BM04 by perennial favorite Bill Breithaupt, and the official premiere of the finished cut of Gone Off Deep’s “Beyond Black Rock.” The event, which drew 400 attendees last year, will also include installations by local Burning Man artists.

The festival is a benefit for Burning Beach, the Santa Cruz Burning Man regional group.

Doors open at 1:30 p.m. and the first film airs at 2 p.m. If you’d like to join us for a post-event outdoor gathering across the street at The Crepe Place, please RSVP so we can give the restaurant a head count and they can staff accordingly.

Tickets: $15 at the door, $12 if you bring three cans of food, which will be donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank. $3 of any full price ticket will be donated to the Family Shelter Project in the name of local burners.
