JRS VOLUME #9; ISSUE #11
JRS:V9:#11:01.26.05
Hello again, ladles and junior mints! It’s time for another edition of the Jack Rabbit Speaks, direct from our fingers to your screen. January brings our first all-staff meeting here at our San Francisco office, and we’re already jumpin’ and excited for 2005’s event. It’s already been a year of a lot of change for our organization. The departure of a couple of longtime staffers (heading off for new adventures) has presented us with interesting challenges, and we’ve had plenty of opportunity for some major in-depth looks at our responsibilities and how we get our work done. And it’s all just in time for the major push toward the desert to begin…
So, with 219 days until we burn again, how are YOUR plans going? Maybe you need a little sprinkling of Burning Man news to spur you through this long winter…well, here you go: we’ve got a ticket update for you from the fine folks here in “Ticketlandia”, a whole slew of new goodies at Burningman.com, a nd news on an upcoming broadcast of Renea Roberts’ “Gifting It” on Free Speech TV. (Hooray for Renea!) Plus more…
…including more film news: ur good buddies at Gone Off Deep are holding an exciting “DVD Cover Design Contest” so you can participate in creating the cover for the upcoming release of their documentary, “Beyond Black Rock”. Find out how to submit your design idea (and have a chance to win a ticket to Burning Man 2005!) under “Participate”, below.
We also share the sad news of a Burning Man community affected by a deep loss in the Southern California landslides this month. Our hearts go out to this community and the families affected by this tragedy. Find out more under BRC News.

TICKET UPDATE * TICKET UPDATE * TICKET UPDATE
Greetings from Ticketlandia…
By now many of you have already purchased tickets and some of you may have experienced issues when first arriving to purchase tickets at 12PM NOON on Jan 5th. We are very sorry for the inconveniences and the confusion, believe us – we certainly didn’t want that to happen. A LOT of planning and effort went into the launch of ticket sales for this year and it was as disappointing to us as it was for those who encountered frustrations with their ticket order.
We made considerable upgrades to our server hardware from 2004’s ticket launch. We purchased 7 new servers, optimized our code, accelerated our processing capacity and worked with a team of engineers to load test the scenerio for 2005 ticket launch. When tickets went onsale, we were more than capable to handle the load of thousands of ticket orders. Unfortunately, we had technical issues with our central database server — it took us 45 minutes to fix this server. So, the first 45 minutes of tickets being onsale, the site was up and down. At 12:45PM, things were smoothed out and within 4 hours, the 10,000 $175 tickets were sold out!
In the panic for ticket sales, a few of you completed multiple orders, trying everything to get your tickets! We have corrected all of the scenerios and have a team of burners working to ensure that you get your tickets.
Our plans are to get you all of your tickets by the end of this month – many of you are already receiving your tickets by the time you get this email!

FREE FORM RADIO ON THE PLAYA – DOWNLOAD
At this last Burning Man 2004, I had an installation at Center Camp called Free Form Radio 104.5. It was a completely automated radio station that allowed people to record their personal and public messages for broadcast to all of Black Rock City over the FM airwaves. The project was totally successful and saw the recording of a great variety of messages. I would like to invite anyone — especially those who recorded a message — to download a compilation of all the messages recorded this year as a little souvenir of their trip to the playa:
http://www.california.com/~fuzzy/Free%20Form%20Radio%202004%20Messages.zip
(The file is 11.1 MB)
Enjoy!
A bientot,

CALIFORNIA MUDSLIDES CLAIM LIFE OF BURNER
Steve Samo writes to us with sad news:
“The world lost a truly beautiful soul this month when the earth came crashing down on the town of La Conchita. Charlie Womack was one of those rare people whose generosity was limitless and whose love and optimism was unstoppable. He was a father to four amazing kids, and to an extended tribe of many many more. With the destruction of the space that he created and opened up to so many, we are left with a void the size of which is somewhat unfathomable at present. The Womack residence, which now lies shattered under tons of mud and stone, was until recently the home of twelve. Five of those twelve are now gone, those who remain have lost almost everything.
In the Burning Man community we talk often and at length about bringing that amazing place we call Black Rock City home with us to live in a state of heightened openness, awareness and generosity. Charlie Womack did much more than just talk about it – he lived it.
Please help the friends and family of Charlie, and the people of La Conchita by donating to any or all of the relief funds that have been set up. Additionally, please come out and attend one of the many gatherings that are being planned by his many friends in the art and music community of Santa Barbara and Ventura.

CONTEST: DESIGN THE COVER FOR “BEYOND BLACK ROCK” DVD!
Gone Off Deep is excited to announce that the special 2-DVD set of “Beyond Black Rock” is just about ready to roll off the presses and will soon be available to you! Boasting a surround-sound-enhanced full cut of the film on one disc and extras, outtakes, deleted scenes, and extended interviews on the second, this DVD set lovingly brings the story of Black Rock City to the big and little screens.
And now, here is YOUR chance to contribute to this fantastic movie! For the next two weeks, Gone Off Deep will be holding a DVD Cover Design contest, to give members of the community a chance to show their designer stuff. This cover should speak to the experience of Burning Man, and catch the eye on the shelf to bring this film beyond our community and share our story with the larger world.
From the GOD website:
“(Designs should be) crazy, fun, off the wall, outrageous, spontaneous, Burning Man inspired art to put on the case cover of this DVD and on the faces of the two DVDs themselves. YES, you heard right … it’s a new TWO DVD set! We’ll be the final judges (with input and thoughts from the Burning Man office monkeys) {Hey, I’m not a monkey! Ook ook! – AG} and we’re looking for something that will literally jump off the shelves at potential viewers and say ‘You Must Watch This Film!’ Yes. Literally.”
Sound fun? OK! Now, don’t you go writin’ the JRS with questions – we forgot all of our Illustrator skills years ago. But our friends down in Texas have posted ALL the instructions, file sizes, elements to include, submission requirements and other such like HERE:
http://www.beyondblackrock.com/dvdart/
Submissions are due by February 14th….and the winner will not only get credit for their work, and the fun of working with the Gone Off Deep crew, but will also receive one FREE ticket to Burning Man 2005!
Contact production(at)goneoffdeep(dot)com with your questions. Now, git designin’!
(One last note: the Gone Off Deep folks reminded us today that the special community offer of the un-enhanced version of the movie, which was selling for $10, has ended. Your chance to own a copy of the 2-DVD set is coming soon, so watch this space for the announcement of the cover design winner!)

We thought to send a note with the link to the Volunteer Questionnaire on our website, for those of you who have been waiting to get involved at Burning Man. Yes, the time is ripe for plugging in as a volunteer – but we’ve also updated the link to the questionnaire, so if you’ve seen any of the older versions of the link, this is the one to use if you’d like to connect with one of our city’s teams and help bring Black Rock City into being in 2005!
