Burning Man Update:
The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 10, Issue 8 December 3, 2005

OK, so it’s a somewhat low-volume week for news, but what we DO have is hearty stuff, my friends. Beyond Black Rock hits the Santa Fe Film Festival in December and you are VERY invited…Dark Skies announces ticket sales…Burning Man needs a Web Software Developer and it could be YOU….and we’ve got a bunch of photos for you, including one from an angle you might not have seen before. (And yes, though we’re usually sticklers about this, we admit we didn’t check to to see if they got model releases on this shot.) Check out Participate! to see what we’re talking about.

Speaking of photographs (and we were) Cameragirl has posted her images of the November 14 dedication of Michael Christian’s glorious “Flock” right in front of San Francisco’s City Hall. I must tell you it was very hard to repress a big, goofy smile that night (so, y’know, I didn’t) as our own Mayor Gavin Newsom addressed the crowd about how delighted he is to be working with Burning Man and BRAF to bring this new kind of art to SF’s public spaces: temporary interactive works. (Is it just me or does this whole shebang just REALLY fire up the imagination? Envision your favorite work of playa art sitting in your own town square for everyone to see. Perhaps – and hopefully! – San Francisco is just the beginning…) CG’s pics: http://www.bohemianmasquerade/flock/flock_dedication.html

With all that, this little Rabbit bids you a fond farewell for 2005…I will be scuttling off on a little sabbatical (actually, this JRS is being posted from NYC!) to help produce a documentary this holiday season. (Unfortunately I can’t tell you anything about it until it’s over, but let’s just say it involves two biodiesel-busloads of delightfully insane people, and I *definitely* won’t be doing any holiday shopping this year.) You may or may not hear from the JRS during the time your Girl of Action is away, but if you do, it’ll be from the fingers of the other Rabbits, since I’ll be elbows-deep in some serious kitten wrangling. (If you write to us during that time, please understand if it takes a little while to respond!) Wish me luck, just as I wish you a fantastic holiday season and a very very happy end to 2005. May you and everyone you love stay safe and warm this winter. Seriously.

See you in 2006! – AG

BEYOND BLACK ROCK HITS SANTA FE FILM FESTIVAL 12/11

Our old pal Mike Wilson writes: “Wanted to make sure you fine folks in New Mexico are aware that Burning Man: Beyond Black Rock is coming to the Santa Fe Film Fest, screening at the Scottish Rite Temple, on Sunday, Dec 11 at 7pm.”

Turn it out, Santa Fe! Playa wear and festive attitudes are encouraged. A second screening could be added if this one sells out, so head on over to http://www.santafefilmfestival.com to make sure you don’t miss out!

Can’t make the fest? Copies of the film are available at http://www.burningmanmovie.com and http://marketplace.burningman.com.

WORK FOR THE MAN…WEB SOFTWARE DEVELOPER NEEDED

Burning Man seeks web software developer (Python/Zope/Plone)

Burning Man is looking for an experienced Python developer to take a lead role in the maintenance and development of a number of web-based systems built using the Plone content management system. The role involves the following responsibilities:

– providing support for and making incremental improvements (bug fixes, new features, etc.) to existing systems

– working directly with end users to gather specifications and requirements for future development

– constructing significant new systems according to gathered requirements, maintaining tight communication with end users to ensure projects stay on target

To be considered for this position, an applicant must be proficient with the Python programming language, as well as have familiarity with web related technologies including HTML/XHTML/XML, CSS, and Javascript. S/he also must have significant experience working within one or more object oriented application development frameworks, preferably within a web environment. Additional consideration will be given to any applicants who have familiarity or experience with Zope (an open source web application server) and/or Plone (an open source content management system). Finally, this position will require strong communication skills, as there will be considerable written and face-to-face interaction with end users through all stages of development.

Systems that this person will be involved with and/or responsible for include Burning Man’s internal extranet system, the Burning Man questionnaire engine at forms.burningman.com, and the traces.burningman.com blogging system. This list will be expanded as new systems are developed.

This is a part time contract position in San Francisco. On site hours at BMHQ are required, but can be flexible.

Interested qualified individuals should send a cover letter and resume to webdevelopment(at)burningman(dot)com by December 9th, 2005.

Before this photo was taken the only known satellite images of Black Rock City had been taken after the event was over. Mike Lawless (who works for Yahoo! Maps) was a first-time burner in 2005 and made the necessary arrangements before coming to the playa so that our city could be photographed by satellite on burn day.

Burning Man was Space Imaging’s ‘Image of the Week’ earlier this month. You can zoom in and poke around town with the “explore this image” link.

A LONGER DARK SKIES?? YES! The Dark Skies Art Festival is growing. You’ve asked for it you got it! We have added Thursday and Monday to the next event! Many of you have expressed the desire to have a longer event and we have heard you! Now there is more time to make community, art and play together!

Funding? We are in the process of setting up a funding process. This is to help promote ART, MUSIC, RADICAL SELF EXPRESSION and COMMUNITY BUILDING.

Why? It is our hope that this process will help the community decide on who and what VegasArtists.com LLC should fund. Funds are limited, but we believe in helping to get all types of art and ideas into this realm. The betterment of expression and experience of the event is the goal. We also hope this process will foster a friendly competition amongst the artist community to participate. Also giving the community an opportunity to have input. Again, funds are limited but we will fund what the community wants with what we have. We believe in keeping things out in the open and producing an event YOU believe in and help to create. After all Dark Skies is YOU!

How does it work? We will have a Funding form to fill out online. You will need to provide information on the what, the why, the costs and the how’s of your idea. Your submission will be available for the community to see. The community then has an option to vote yeah and nay on funding the project. VegasAtists.com will allocate funds based on the response.

Getting Involved! It is the Future… Just join the Dark Skies e-group on yahoo, so you can keep in touch and informed about what is going on in the community http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/DARKSKIES_LASVEGAS/

Plan a creation to share with your fellow participates. Do not be afraid to show us who you are! For under the Dark Skies you are the star! Shine on!

{============================================================} ====================REGIONAL FEATURE!!====================== {============================================================}

(The Regional Feature is a new corner of the JRS devoted to highlighting one new region each week. Read up on what’s going on in YOUR area: http://regionals.burningman.com)

This week’s feature: CHICAGO, ILLINOIS

Here, we’ll put it in their own words:

“Since spring of 2002 about five different groups of Burners and a whole slew of Burner newbies have been working together to unify the many Burners in Chicago, create a community and ingest an avenue for all things Burning Man and beyond in the central states. This Chicago/Milwaukee group is unique in the fact that we were all strangers at the outset of our experiment, building our relationships and riding personal dynamics out of a desire to create and continue a community. Now, after 3 1/2 challenging and inspiring years, 4 summer burns, 3 christmas tree burns, decompressions, rolling skating parties, and too many men in women’s clothes to count, relationships have formed and a deeply connected family forged from big fires and strange chaos remains.”

Chicagoans, get your kicks and get connected here: http://regionals.burningman.com/us_il_chi.html
