JRS VOLUME #10; ISSUE #13

Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 10, Issue 13
February 2, 2005

What the heck happened to January? 212 days.

We’re not sure if it has healing powers, but we definitely watched this auction last week – the Larry Harvey Cinnamon Bun: http://tinyurl.com/dza6s . Best question from the Q and A with the Seller: “Will the Larry Harvey Cinammon Bun get along with my Terrence McKenna bagel?” We did a spit take. It’s true.

(A little bird told us that the auction’s proceeds are being donated to BRAF, so we’ll leave it to you to enjoy the link.)

We also learned from reader Sophia that you *can* see Pearlington, MS on a map — if you’re curious about the location of our burner friends on the Temple to Temple crew, here’s a bird’s eye view: http://tinyurl.com/8es4h .

And heyyy….if you got an Atomic Fireball with your ticket, it’s okay to eat it. The US Postal Service encouraged us to include something small and solid like a piece of candy inside each package to ensure that your signature-upon-delivery ticket package is processed by hand. Thus, candy from the Ticket Team. As if the ticket design this year wasn’t sweet enough, ya know?

Just a little catchup today; mostly getting the word out about Burning Man on Discovery Times tonight, a few projects to keep tickling your fancy on how to get involved this year, and a quick word about sending events to JRS. Plus a little update from our friends up north in Oregon…see you next week!

BURNING MAN IN THE NEWS: DISCOVERY TIMES

Whether you ranted or raved or avoided the controversy altogether, if you spend time on community forums you may know people have been talking about the Discovery Times’ coverage of Burning Man for the travel show, “Only In America”. We’re not here to debate its merits or kick start another debate…we’re here to let you know that it’s airing starting tonight, Thursday February 2, at 11 PM PST. Other airtimes are at:

http://times.discovery.com/tvlistings/episode.jsp?episode=8&cpi=112468&gid=0&channel=DTC

For those that were following the conversations online about concern over Burning Man’s approval of the Discovery Times piece in 2005, we are very pleased to report that we had a great visit from the folks at http://savebrc.org this past Tuesday. Delivering, as promised, their stack of petitions from their website, the tutu-clad representatives from this group were greeted by a Burning Man staff who had donned their own tutus in a show of solidarity. (We called it Tu Tu Tuesday, and it just might be hard to keep us from wearing them every week.)

Anyway, we sat down with Chai Guy and Da Bomb for a great conversation about the history of our approach to media at the event, and how their application requests are processed by the media team and the careful consideration each proposal is given before projects like the Discovery Times piece are approved to film and to air. After that, Chai and Bomb sat down with Larry Harvey, Maid Marian, and Danger Ranger for another long philosophical talk on this and other subjects they had questions about. The whole thing was captured as a podcast by these concerned participants, and we really enjoyed meeting with them and getting their insights for how to do even more to get the word out about how Burning Man works with the media to bring our culture’s story to the larger world. Keep your eyes on their website for that podcast.

Thanks to the participants of this engaging dialogue for seeing it to a positive conclusion.

PROJECT MEGAPIXELS: THE PLAYA FROM SPACE

Sputnik writes: “Did you see the satellite photo of Black Rock City 2005? I did, and after looking at it for a while I got an inspiration to create an image on the desert floor that could be seen from space, or at least from a satellite with a really good camera. Project Megapixels was born in late November of 2005 with this goal in mind. In order to reach this goal we need your help. Please go to the project website to learn more and sign up.

JOIN A THEME CAMP FOR SMALLER ART

A new theme camp idea: “One of the wonderful things about the playa is the enormous canvas it presents large scale artists. Unfortunately, this large canvas doesn’t always allow smaller works to be presented at their best.

‘artspace’ is a new theme camp that will provide display space for dimensionally smaller art. We’ll offer wall, pedestal, and installation space with lighting, labels, and protection from the elements.

Our goal for artspace is provide a home on the playa for smaller art pieces, in a space where they won’t be dwarfed by the larger pieces. By displaying these smaller works together, many more people will be able to see and appreciate them in a space that will show them off to their best advantage.

artspace is currently seeking artists who would like to display their art with us, people who would like to join our camp, and benefactors who would like to help make artspace a reality. Visit our webpage at http://www.ericsmith.com/artspace”

CINCINNATI, WANNA SHARE A TRUCK?

A Midwestern burner writes: “Hello 2006 Burners from the Cincinnati, Ohio area. If you are planning to go to Burning Man this year and need transportation for your stuff from the Cincinnati area, have we got a deal for you!! This will be our 3rd Burning Man adventure, so we know the ropes. We have a group of 8 people so far who are going and we’re planning to rent a 24-foot U-Haul truck. We think we’ll have room to haul other people’s stuff out there. The cost will be determined by the number of people who want to use our truck. You can ride with us if you have the time or you can meet your stuff out there at the end of the journey. You may camp with us or on your own. Whatever way you want to do it us up to you. If this interests you, please email us at suzannemccarter (at) msn (dot) com and we’ll connect with you.”

PICS REQUESTED

She didn’t give her name, so we’ll just call her Mom: “I want to find the photographer who took some pictures of me this past year at the man. I was extremely pregnant and had some wonderful pictures taken of me. I lost the photographer’s information, I know that he lives in Utah and his wife gave my husband and I a gift of small pictures…These were the only pictures taken of me at the man and I would love to get copies. So please mr photographer contact me at sgray0420@aol.com, please type ‘pregant at burning man’ in the subject line. Oh by the way, I had a girl born September 28, she is beautiful!!! ”

ABOUT EVENTS ON JRS

We thought now might be a good time to remind folks about the posting guidelines for Jack Rabbit Speaks – especially related to events as the camp fundraiser and regional burn season gears up! If you’re trying to list an off-playa event, there are some things you should keep in mind when sending your announcement to jackrabbitspeaks (at) burningman (dot) com.

1.) We just don’t post everything we get. Sometimes we’ll send a theme camp fundraiser announcement in a faraway place, to remind folks that there is activity everywhere…but generally theme camp fundraisers should be aimed at your local lists. Sometimes we’ll post something that’s of interest but not officially related (that’s not very often!) or an event has a lot of your Burning Man friends involved…but we cannot post every event in every city, and the PRIMARY place to post your local events is your local announce list through your Regional Contact. If you don’t have one in your area, send us a note and we can talk about it. If you’re not sure, visit http://regionals.burningman.com.

2.) Long descriptive posts will generally be trimmed down to just a few elements, so save yourself some time and just send: Name and date and location of event, who you are, and a URL for more information.

3.) Offical regional events are given priority in this space. These listings will include a link to the local regional contact for more information.

4.) When crafting the JRS we have to ask ourselves if a listing is of interest (even of just passing interest) to the largest percentage of our readers to keep them informed about what’s going on around the world of Burning Man. Please don’t be offended if we don’t include every post. We are just trying hard to keep 35,000 readers as happy and interested as possible. Every story and note is appreciated, either way.

5.) If you don’t put “POST REQUEST” in the subject line your item might be overlooked in all the spam and other mail when composin’ day is here.

6.) We reserve the right to share things that vary from these parameters from time to time. We will always endeavor to keep your JRS relevant to your Burning Man experience…and we thank you for reading and sharing this world with us and taking the time to read!

SOUTHERN OREGON’S REGIONAL: SISKIYOU BURNERS:

We got this lovely note from our Southern Oregon regionals. Hope that other area burners (Hi, Mom) will reach out to get connected to what’s happening in the Siskiyou region these days:

“Squeeze and Mistress here in Southern Oregon…thought I’d give you a brief update.

1) We are currently restructuring our *”Mission,”* After talking to Steven Raspa, and a few others, they supported our new view. Which is:

2) Focus on *more gatherings* that are simpler, not full on party/events. We are meeting quarterly at a local coffee house. All ages, drinkers and non, etc. We have (also) established a local bulletin board.

3) *Random Acts*-Bring the playa home. Our town of Ashland is very busy during the summer. So…we are planning:

FREE LEMONADE STAND FREE TRAYS OF FRUIT AND SNACKS FREE GIFT GIVE AWAYS IN OUR DOWNTOWN.

These things support the gifting idea. Commercialism is high priority here, so this will take locals & tourists off guard.

4) *pUBLIC tAKEOVERS*- We are planning these to provide random fun for us and a bit of the absurd for locals/tourists. These may include bunny marches, costumed restaurant takeovers and parades of art.

5) *Update of Website, connect* with our regional BM website (update or paragraph description) and update our members list.

6) We are *increasing the base* of “Regional Supporters,” Ann & I, plus our website guy (Dennis) have worked on this alone without much help. We since then have added a core base of (always can count on friends)…of 4 others. This has made “getting things done” a lot easier.
