JRS VOLUME #10; ISSUE #14

Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 10, Issue 14
February 22, 2006

OK, I’m just going to say it: the world looks a lot like roses to me today, so if you don’t ken too well to themes of positivity, inspiration, and community pride, you may be subscribed to the wrong newsletter. (There’s a reason someone dubbed me “Pollyanna Scabies”.) Yes, we’re going full-bore, both-barrelled starry-eyed optimism this week. Who can’t use a little of that?

To wit: this week’s San Francisco Bay Guardian has a cover story by City Editor Steven T. Jones, who visited our volunteer crew in Pearlington, MS last week (as did yours truly) and got his hands dirty pursuing the story of Burners Without Borders, and how members of the Burning Man community have taken their strangely appropriate skillsets (and sizeable hearts) to the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina to give away all the help they can.

The cover story by Steven T. Jones, aka Scribe: http://www.sfbg.com/40/21/cover_katrina.html

Companion piece (online only) by Burning Man’s very own Tom Price, entitled “Why I’m here”: http://sfbg.com/40/21/cover_why.html

Burners Without Borders website: http://www.burnerswithoutborders.org

Swoon! And the work’s not done, yet, and our crew currently plans to stay in the area until late March 2006, which means now is still a fine time for you to help. If you’re interested in donating, getting involved, or just keeping up with the story, please keep your eye on the Katrina section of the Burners Without Borders website: http://www.burnerswithoutborders.org/katrina

LOVING the friends in our midst who have taken the time to go try and make a difference in the world. Thanks to all of you.

And that’s just part of what we do, innit: there’s still that city in the desert to attend to, that place that our shared ideals and sense of wonder manifest every year…and at just under halfway through the year, now’s the time that we really come out of our slumber and start preparing. It starts with QUESTIONNAIRES galore, for those who are ready to register their projects: theme camps, art installations, and mutant vehicles already? Yep. It’s that time! Find the links below in BRC news. Plus photos, upcoming events, a few ways to get involved, several shouts-out for the geeks among us, and…heck, a whole lot of stuff. Cruise on in, pull up a chair, and let’s get started, because it’s a hefty week here at the JRS, with 192 brimming-with-longing days left to go.

BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS: GRATITUDE FROM THE BUDDHIST TEMPLE

Thought to also share this letter from the Treasurer of the Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation of Mississippi:

“February 5, 2005

Dear Larry:

I am writing in my capacity as treasurer and member of the Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation of Mississippi to extend our heartfelt thanks for the assistance provided by your volunteers in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Our temple was devastated by flooding, that reached to the ceilings, threatening the 58 souls who had taken refuge in the attic. In the aftermath of the storm the walls, ceilings, insulation had to be removed and replaced.

One of my relatives attends Burning man yearly and communicated our plight to Phillip Lindsay, a contractor in Oregon who wanted to help. Phillip and his son Matthew drove to Biloxi with a crane and tractor to help rebuild the VIetnamese neighborhood that was leveled by the storm. We established a location for them on the grounds of the temple, from which they reached out into the community. They also began help in rebuilding our temple. With a 40 ft. dome in place, we established a free medical clinic, food distribution area and supply storage. The Burning Man volunteers that joined us in Biloxi distributed each day more than one 18-wheeler load of food and supplies. As the effort grew, 20-40 volunteers at a time rotated through the site. Richard Scott joined us early in the process and added his expertise to the construction effort. The group was loaned a mammoth front-end loader and track hoe for their demolition work. As a group, their benefit to our community cannot be overemphasized. Every day they went out into the community to clear lots and bring down derelict homes. Every day another family was touched by their generosity.

By mid-January the temple was complete, ready for the annual Vietnamese new year celebration, and the volunteers moved on to the Poplarville area, where they are continuing their good work. Our congregation extends its thanks to your group, nebulous as it is, for your support. Without the help of the volunteers, the temple would still lie in ruins.

Sincerely Yours,

Don La Grone, M.D. Treasurer Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation of Mississippi”

BURNING MAN’S DONATIONS IN NEVADA SUPPORTING EDUCATION AND CREATIVITY

Burning Man Charitable Donations

Every year Burning Man donates the proceeds from ice sales at the event to art & service charities in northern Nevada. Here’s an excerpt from a letter thanking us for the donation to the Gerlach High School, written by the drama instructor.

“Two days ago (Wednesday, January 25th), my small Drama Class gave what I believe is one of the two finest performances of my tenure here as drama director. Three girls teamed together to perform The Miracle Worker, and they did it so well that several in the small audience were brought to tears at the end. Prior to the start of the performance, I thanked The Burning Man organization. It was a sincere, ‘thanks’ because the donation your agency made to our group last year allowed us to choose a play to perform without worrying about how much of our budget would be depleted. We thoroughly enjoyed having that freedom to choose.

“Earlier this year, I was able to take my students to the Pioneer Center in Reno to observe a theatrical presentation. This ‘field trip’ was the first-ever such trip in the eleven years I have been a teacher at this school. Later that same day, we visited KRNV-TV (Channel 4) and were guest observers during a live evening newscast. This trip would not have been possible without the monies donated to our drama class by your organization.

“My class will reap benefits from that donation for several years to come. So, I wish to repeat the last sentence of the letter I sent to you last year because the words are just as true today as they were last year: ‘On behalf of every student who ever takes drama class in this school, I send you and your organization our deepest Thanks. We shall always remember your fabulous gesture.'”

ARE YOU A GEEK WHO BRINGS TECHNOLOGY TO THE PLAYA?

Not just a laptop to check your email once during the week when you randomly hop on the Wifi cloud provided by the good folks at Internet at Burning Man, but the kind of geek who brings a whole car full of technology and towers and beams bits and bytes all over the playa and into the universe?

You are?! So are we!

Well, from one geek to another… we all know that these bits and bytes that we are beaming all over the playa will play a lot nicer with each other, and get to where they are supposed to be going, if we all talk about what we are planning to do and work together ahead of time. Heck, we may even be able to help each other out a bit on our projects!

That said, the Burning Man Technology Department will be hosting the first ever Playa Wireless Summit in mid March. If you are planning a largescale technological project, have an art project that absolutely requires Internet connectivity (e.g., the fabulous Virtual Playa project), or will be beaming any sort of bits and bytes into the airwaves above the playa, you are cordially invited and strongly requested to participate by responding to this post at playatech (at) burningman (dot) com.

Please let us know the nature of your project, feel free to get as geeky as you wannabe. You’ll be invited to attend the Summit where we’ll talk geek talk and compare the size of our towers and other fun things like that.

Once again, if you are bringing “heavy geekery” like repeaters and towers, or you have a project that MUST have an Internet connection, we need to hear from you.

Thanks! (01110100011010000110000101101110011010110111001100100001)

SCIENCE AND ART COMBINED WITH THE EXPLANADE PROJECT

Sunburn Sarah writes: “Explanade Art/Science project under the creative direction of Russell Wilcox needs your talents and skills.

We need a team of display builders, tinkers, gadget makers, artists, people handy with making things work….

We will have fun while creating a unique and fascinating interactive art/science display.

The Explanade is a hands-on museum of the parts of philosophy that relate to science. Concepts from epistemology (theory of knowledge) and metaphysics (theory of existence) are illustrated, as well as some key scientific ideas that comprise our present world view. Abstract ideas are made concrete and visual. Jargon is avoided. Relevance to everyday experience is emphasized, while maintaining a sense of fascination and wonder at profound ideas near the edge of human understanding. In one sense this exhibit can be seen as the background of ideas that underlie or are implied by what other science museums present as facts. The information here is less about facts than about the nature of facts and how they are obtained.

Most of the building efforts will be completed pre-playa with assembly on playa.

For project details, please see http://www.laserminimalism.com Please look at the list of displays for something which you might have the skills to pull off. We need your skills and creative talents to create the displays.

This team will be located in the SF Bay area, but we welcome any and all help on playa to help with setup and other team events.

Please contact Sunburn Sarah, Explanade Project Manager at: explanade2006 (at) yahoo (dot) com to volunteer or for questions.”

DOCTORAL STUDENT SEEKS PERFORMERS TO PROBE BRAINS

From the bright and lovely Wendy C. (who sings a mean “Summertime” too, we might add):

“I am a doctoral candidate writing about performance at Burning Man. If you are a participant who has performed at the event, I am reaching out in the hopes that you might be interested in commenting to me about your experiences performing both on stage and as a participant at the event. The information you give me will eventually go into my dissertation and with your permission, could be quoted using only your stage name. If you would be so kind as to take the time to respond to my query, your stories and experiences shared could give a second life to your performing. If you have pictures you would like to forward to me for use and as a means of profiling your performance please do so and thank you for your time/help with this research project.

Best Regards, Wendy Clupper aka Mistress Mao wendyclupper@yahoo.com”

Shoot Wendy an email to receive the eight-question survey.

MARK YR CALENDAR: INTERFUSE: MIDWESTERN BURN MAY 5-7, BOONVILLE, MISSOURI

Midwest Burners, a whimsical heartland Burning Man group, is proud to announce our third annual Regional Burn, InterFuse 2006: Archaic Imagination

Where: The magickal land of Ozark Avalon, Boonville, Missouri

When: A time outside of time, May 5-7, 2006

Midwest Burners is a Burning Man inspired group radiating out from the Kansas City area. Many InterFuse participants come from the Kansas City and St. Louis areas, since InterFuse is primarily a collaboration between these two communities. However, we encourage any other Burners, especially those in the Midwest, to come co-create the InterFuse experience. Of course, you don’t need to be a previous Burner to attend this event. The goal of InterFuse is to unite the scattered Burners and pre-Burners of the Midwest in the flames of this celebration of Art, Fire, and Life – further spreading the unique Burning Experience through the region.

Theme: This year we are exploring the art, symbols, and archetypes in ancient fairy tale, myth, and folklore.

Pantheon Project: This year’s Main Burn will again be a radically participatory project. From the depths of our communal imagination, we’re bringing forth a Pantheon of mythical images. We invite everyone to contribute or create small fantasy creatures, temples, figures, symbols, monuments, prayers, mementos, and messages etc. to inhabit this scene. The Pantheon can accommodate both aerial and terrestrial creatures. No one will know what will inhabit the Pantheon until we put it together at the event. The level of participation will determine how fantastical our creation will be.

Tickets: All tickets are $15 and are PRE-SALES only. Ticket sales began in March 2006.

Only Midwest Burners Association members and their guests may participate in InterFuse. Membership is free and simple though!! For more information on membership, InterFuse, and the Pantheon Project, please visit http://www.midwestburners.com
