Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 11, Issue #12
June 28, 2007

USUBSCRIBE: A huge batch of unsubscribes was just handled by our bunny friends, so y’all should be pretty squared away. If you’re still having trouble please send a little note to jackrabbitspeaks (at) burningman (dot) com – we do get a TON of spam so your message may have been mislaid. Our apologies…but hopefully everyone reading this is getting it because they want to. Otherwise automated instructions are at the bottom.

You know you work for Burning Man when you know it’s June because every dinner in the past week was pizza or chips at a meeting! We’d be lying if we didn’t say that this is the busiest, craziest, nuttiest, most exciting and intense year around the Office of the Jack Rabbit, and outside our door, I think our coworkers would concur. How are your plans going?

Your summer newsletters will be winging their way to you soon with LOTS of great info about the Green Man, the art projects this year, and gorgeous photos and illustrations of the amazing experience we’re all about to have….egad, wait for it…in just 65 days!

Seen the enviro blog lately? The story of the Panhandle Bandshell project…the new plan for ICE in BRC (hint: ice will be close by, no matter where you are in the city!) and more daily tips from all of YOU! http://burningman.com/environment/blog/

We won’t babble today. There’s too much to talk about this week, ya know? Only this then off we go: we missed a few posts (oops) in the Resource issue, and a few of you were bummed your posts were left off. Thus, “RESOURCES REVISITED” is due out later this week with a few Resource Issue corrections and errata. Forewarned is forearmed, or something like that.

PLAYA RESTORATION TIPS OF THE WEEK!

DA, Dark Angel of the Playa, has the mic to give you….

DPW Playa Restoration Tip of the Week: LINE SWEEPS!

But first: let’s review some basic Playa Restoration Vocabulary:

M.O.O.P. (noun) – Matter Out Of Place: especially as it applies to Black Rock City and its Citizens. MOOP can be anything that does not belong on the Playa: cigarette butts, bottle caps, glowsticks, fireworks… but is often disguised as debris, i.e., broken bits of wood, plastic, metal, glass, and plants. MOOP can also be a condition: burn scars, grey water, dunes, paint, etc.

moop (verb) – to pick up Matter Out Of Place

mooper (noun) – one who moops

Okay, does everybody got that? Sounds simple, right. Let’s move on…

Line Sweep (noun) – a line up of moopers side by side and arms width apart; a quick and efficient community effort for scanning and picking up Matter Out Of Place over a given area of playa surface such as your camp, city block, art installation, village, etc.

Line Sweep Rule of Thumb:
1.) Figure out the WIDTH and LENGTH of your area (camp, installation, etc.) and define your BOUNDARIES; this is the area that you will focus on. Use anything that will define your space like traffic cones, flags, or even lawn chairs.
2.) LINE UP along the width of your area arms width apart (roughly 6 ft), this will give you your optimal number of moopers.
3.) MOOP OUT from one side of your area to the other. Mark hot spots or problem areas for clean up after. Turn around, Line Up, and Moop Out again. Line Up until no trace is found.
* Don’t forget to go back and take care of those hot spots and problem areas!

Any questions? restoration (at) burningman (dot) com

DUE JULY 20TH: ANY NAMES FOR 2007 REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE FOR BURNERS LOST

Since 1996, Burning Man has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away each year. This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any burners lost who you feel should be added to the Remembrance Plaque. Please send their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to this address (use REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE in the subject line): remembrance(at)burningman(dot)com (please DO NOT HIT REPLY to this JRS).

We need all submissions by July 20th.

Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man from Monday (August 27th) through Friday (August 31st).

SEND THE SERPENT MOTHER ON A WORLD TOUR

FLG’s on the mic: “The Flaming Lotus Girls are taking the Serpent Mother on her 2007 world tour! We start this July at the Crucible’s Fire Arts Festival. And then put the snake on slow boat to Amsterdam for her European Debut at the Robodock festival in Amsterdam.

Please take a look at our new website here:- http://serpentmother.com

For the last few years you have seen us grow from a small collection of individuals to a large collaborative group. It is through the unique collaboration we have cultivated that we are able to produce work like the Serpent Mother. We are now asking our greater Burning Man community to collaborate with us to help us raise the $90,000 we need to take our work on tour. We already have raise $50,000 towards our goal including a grant from our favorite non-profit, Black Rock Arts Foundation. We are halfway there -a you can help us with the other half.

Every little bit you contribute will help, even twenty dollars. Please consider a donation. Your donation will help bring awareness to large scale interactive art to a global audience. You can donate here:- http://serpentmother.com/Donate

COSTUME RECYCLING AT KOSTUME KULT

“Fellow burners…

This year, Kostume Kult re-welcomes you to our humble esplanade dome for a riot of costumery, crafts and paints. Since 2002 we have ‘costumed the naked’ and all comers with donations from all around. In this Green Year we will be giving stuff away but also emphasizing the theatrical side of costuming with our twisted, Dark Side of Oz theme encouraging all fantastical costumers to come by our dome and (all new!) Flying Monkey pub for a DJ set, frosty rain-forest-friendly beverages and random ridiculum. (Extra treats will be awarded for absurdity.)

For the Green Man we now put a special shout-out for Costume Recycling to any and all folks who can drop stuff off or ship to us now. In the past we have had truckloads of stuff to give away, but this year we are light so we appeal to all the playa-fabulous to support the cause.

Check the backs of your closets and those rickety costume trunks! Many of us have stuff that we have grown tired of or are a little worse for the wearings. If they are playa-friendly (no feathers or moopiness) you could be making someone’s week– someone who can make magic with your forgotten orphans. Save the costume orphans!

If you want to send, please email us at kult (at) kostumekult (dot) com or stop by Kostume Kult’s costume dome in Konsortium Village anytime. We can pay for shipping if necessary and also interested in any costume shop fire-sales you may hear of.

With any other Kostume Kult questions you can email either of us… XO

RV DUMPING – SUTCLIFFE MARINA

Joe wrote with this one: “If your RV is full-up when you leave the Burning Man event, the closest RV dump is on the Reservation at the Marina at Sutcliffe. It is only a few extra miles but you do not have to haul all that crap around! They are open during the day from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, cost $10.00. A park elbow is now required due to a nasty incident of someone losing their hose in the works, if you do not have one they will sell you one for $15.00 and include a free dump. Instead of just one dump site, they have several empty trailer spaces that they use when there is heavy demand so there is little or no wait

Directions: Take the highway turnoff to Sutcliffe just past Nixon. This is the only slightly longer scenic route. When you get to the Y that goes to Sparks, go to Sutcliffe and take the last right turn in town- it goes right to the Marina. When you are done go back to the Y and proceed to Sparks and Interstate 80.

If you are planning on jumping in the lake (very refreshing and highly recommended) be sure to buy a day use permit in Nixon for $9.00 per vehicle.”

Locations for permits are all around the area: http://www.burningman.com/preparation/travel_info/pyramid_lake.html

NORTHWEST BURNERS PASSIN’ THROUGH CEDARVILLE

We remind you every year that the speed limits in the small Nevada towns on the way to Burning Man are NOT to be trifled with…in these places, 25 means 25, not 26, 27, or 30 and certainly not more. These are issues of safety for the residents, and if that doesn’t compel you, maybe the threat of a good old fashioned ticket will… well, anyway, we’ve heard from our cub reporter in Cedarville that the C’ville police are sharpening their pencils lately too, and we’re asked to warn our readers that south of Duck Flat to Gerlach is “fifty frikkin’ five,” friends, and not a smidge higher. The portion of the stretch that was state highway (70 MPH) that’s now designated county road is 55 MPH, and apparently locals who don’t notice are getting tagged pretty regularly.

Say it with us now: Obey all posted speed limits, get to Burning Man safe and sound (and speeding-ticket-free)!

FREE FUEL FOR ART CARS POWERED BY VEGETABLE OIL

The Birds of Playadise are back again, and serving the art car community. Most of you already know that diesel cars and trucks are easily converted to run on waste veggie oil (WVO), which you can get for free from your local sushi shop or french cafe. This year, some art cars will be running WVO on playa too. The Birds of Playadise want to support WVO-powered art cars by GIVING AWAY Waste Veggie Oil at Burning Man for use at Black Rock City.

Even if you don’t have a WVO car, stop by the camp’s education station to learn about this easy and accessible carbon-neutral fuel alternative. (We’ll also be exhibiting a converted WVO vehicle at the Green Pavilion at the base of the man.)

If you’re an art-car person who may need WVO on the playa, it would be great to hear from you in advance. And please feel free to be in touch if you have questions about converting your diesel engine to run WVO .

DO YOU EXPRESS YOUR FAITH AT BURNING MAN?

“My name is Allison Shelley and I am a staff photographer at the Washington Times as well as a regular playa-ite and Burning Man participant.

I am interested in doing a photo-heavy feature story for the Times that would basically focus on religion within the context of Burning Man– how more ‘traditional’ religion is received at an event that has been described as a gathering place for those embracing alternative forms of spirituality.

In that vein, I am looking to talk with individuals or groups who openly express, celebrate or share their faith on the playa– such as in prayer, rituals, gatherings– whether they be Christian, Muslim, Mormon, Jewish, etc.

I can be reached at ashelley. Many thanks in advance!”

HELP EXODUS EMPTY OUT BLACK ROCK CITY!

Evacado and Stacie from the Exodus team wrote: “Since 2000, we have had a good track record of making Exodus better each year, but in 2006 we got to see what happens when we don’t have enough volunteers. I think we can all agree that last year’s Exodus sucked. So this year, we are working hard to make this the fastest and safest Exodus ever! And we need your help!

Exodus needs you!

The Exodus team is always in need of volunteers to direct traffic out of Black Rock City at the end of the event.

*Are you interested in volunteering, but don’t want to commit to something during the event?
*Are you planning on staying for a day or more after the Man burns?
*Are you interested in shorter shifts – 6 hours, instead of the 8 hours necessitated by other departments?

If you are thinking “Yeah! That’s me!” Then Exodus is the department for you! Just about everything Exodus does is after the Man burns, so you can play free all week, and then hang out and give back to your city at the end.

In our quest to empty Black Rock City as quickly and safely as possible, we need lots of people to fill four-to-six hour shifts on Saturday, Sunday and Monday of the event, Roles include:

Set-up: 10-20 dedicated, hardworking volunteers needed to set hundreds of cones to delineate the exit lanes and merge points. This happens during the day on Saturday.

Exiters : Direct traffic into and across lanes of traffic. Answer a few questions, untangle snarls, but mostly wave goodbye! We need lots of Exiters: Bring a friend! – Sunday and Monday.

Flaggers : This is a job that requires a bit more time commitment – Flaggers will attend certification class that takes about 4 hours and is held in Gerlach on Wednesday during the event. The certification is good for two years. Flaggers abide by Nevada State laws and guidelines regarding traffic control on the county roads around the event. Transportation is provided, and there is an opportunity to get paid 10$ per hour for your work as a flagger. We have 42 shifts to fill – we need to train a lot of new flaggers!

Tear-down: Some more hard-working people needed on Tuesday to pick up all those hundreds of road cones.

If you want to get involved with Exodus, please email us at: exodus (at) burningman (dot) com

LAST YEAR FOR PISS CLEAR — BLACK ROCK CITY’S FAVORITE NEWSPAPER! CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS!

Adrian, who will always look better in hot pants than any of us, writes: “This will be the last year of publication for PISS CLEAR, Black Rock City’s favorite alternative newspaper. Yup, the end of an era…

We’re doing three final issues for this year’s Burning Man, and then calling it quits. It’s gonna be 13 years – and that’s how long the Black Rock Gazette lasted – so it seems like the right time to end it.

So if you’ve EVER wanted to write something for PISS CLEAR, this year is your last chance. This is the our annual CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS. So … send me stuff!

Here’s what we’re looking for: interesting articles, rants, photographs, comix, items for the Out/In list, whatever. To get an idea of what we do, check out the PISS CLEAR web site at: http://www.pissclear.org

Think of us as the Vice magazine of the playa. We’re Burning Man’s snarky reality check, so keep it sassy, saucy, and fun — and specific to Burning Man. Sorry, no long-winded, self-serving articles about your theme camp or art project. We’re not a company newsletter. We’re more like a Black Rock City lifestyle magazine.

Deadline for advance submissions is August 1st. If you’d like to submit something, or for more information, please e-mail Adrian at: pissclear (at) pissclear (dot) org

GREEN BURN PROJECT NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Tedward says: “The Green Burn project is a dedicated group of people trying to make non-petroleum based fuels available to the fire conclave for the night of the burn. http://lafc.org/green_burn.html

One of the fuels that we have selected to replace white gas, Ethyl Acetate, is particularly hard to find at industrial purity. At reagent purity, it’s extremely cost prohibitive ($40/gal). We KNOW that, among other things, it’s used as a replacement for acetone in some nail polish removers, so an industrial source must be out there. But we can’t find it.

So, we need folks who have any connection to any chemical supplier to ask if Ethyl Acetate is available in economy sources.”

INFECT SOME BRAINS…SEND US YOUR GREEN MEMES!

The EverWOW folks write: “What are your favorite thoughts on greening life? Global warming? Global cooling? Environmental activism? Personal choices? The powers that be? The powers that could be?

We’re looking for Green Memes…. environmental messages that propagate from mind to mind — surviving, spreading, and possibly mutating. We’re collecting these thought spores over the summer and from participants on the playa. We’ll send them back out through performances and projections at the Chapel of the Holy WOW in EverWOW Camp. Spread your ideas at http://www.everwow.org or http://www.greensavvy.net – look for the brain….”

PERFORMERS, WE WANT YOU AT A CAVALLO!

“A Cavallo, aka the Carousel, has a stage! This 60ft x 25ft mobile mirage cruises the open playa, equipped with rideable steel horses, flame effects, and a live performance stage open to all participants. More about the project at http://www.acavallo.org .

A Cavallo’s stage will be equipped with tour-quality PA system, monitors, drum kit, mixers, mics, and lighting to accommodate the staggering diversity of talent found in Black Rock City. We’re booking about 72 hours worth of performance, from singer-songwriters to 10-piece bands, cheerleader squads to bell choirs, and monologuists to interpretive dance clowns, in addition to all the surprises we’ll find once we get out there. And hey, we even have outriggers for aerial acts – a ring on one side, a trapeze on the other.

If you want to share your talent with the lovely citizens of BRC, now’s your chance. Please email Linus at littlelinus (at) gmail (dot) com. You will rock! We will help.”

PARTICIPATE IN THE GOLDEN SPIRAL

“We are looking for volunteers from the Burning Man community who would like to participate in our project ‘The Golden Spiral’. The Green Man is a theme dear to our heart as our planet calls out for us to become more in tune and in alliance with Nature, to green life, to living in harmony with the cosmos, the universe and our world. There is so much strength in working together and a bound is formed in creating ‘Art without Boundaries’. Any amount of time you can give to the project will be much appreciated. We live in San Francisco and will be working in a large studio space until the day we leave for the Playa on August 22nd.

There is room for painters, sculpture, carpenters (on the playa), decorators and fairy making or any thing you can contribute. The Golden Spiral is created by the Golden mean and is found throughout nature, art, architecture, science and humans. We will create a path to walk the Golden Spiral into the center of the great Sequoia tree. The Sequoia tree symbolizes immortality and represents earth. Green is also considered the color of peace and ecology and in this time when ecology and peace are of great concern, this is very appropriate. The tree will stand in the center of the spiral. Inside of the tree will be a staircase that spirals upward into the heart of the tree. It will be interactive in nature. Participants will be able to enter the spiral and climb upward to a nest positioned on an 8-10 foot platform. The tree will be 40 feet at the highest point and the bird’s nest will be at 30 feet. The floor and the center of the tree (Golden Spiral) will consist of an altar to Nature, to Mother Earth and to the Origins of Creation, which will also be interactive. Those who enter can leave tokens, prayers, wishes, remembrances, memories, celebratory writings, drawings and tributes to communicate to the Great spirits. For more detail please find a description on the site http://www.clearheart.org and click ‘Burning Man Project’. Please contact either Pegasus or Skeeter Jones at millarp.”

EARNING IT: THEME CAMP SEEKS COOKS

The Devil’s Workshop & Day Spa, an all new large-scale theme camp, supporting the Crude Awakenings Crew & other artists, is looking for a small team of great cooks. This is an excellent opportunity for a few responsible Burners that are looking to help contribute. The position comes with a Burning Man ticket, meals, waiver of camp dues ($50) and free transportation to/from the event. You can’t beat that!

If you’re interested in this position, please email Diva (netdiva (at) gmail (dot) com) and tell me a little bit about yourself and why you should be considered. If I don’t know you, I’m going to want some info about other projects you’ve worked on, how many times you’ve been in the desert, who can vouch for you, etc.

Crude Awakenings is Karen Cusolito & Dan Das Mann’s project and one of the largest art installations ever on the playa. The Devi’s Workshop & Day Spa is a new theme camp that hopes for Esplanade frontage. For more info about this, please see: http://tribes.tribe.net/devilsworkshop or http://tribes.tribe.net/devilsworkshop/thread/5a74d5f7-8f94-4f48-b70f-509cb1fe7a4c

YES, WE’RE REALLY ALREADY PLANNING DECOMPRESSION!

Life After Playa…Time To Make The Decoms!

This time of year it can be hard to imagine anything past the specter of Burning Man, but there is indeed life after the Playa, and we call it…Decompression! Your Burning Man Special Events Team is already hard at work planning this year’s spectacular SF Decompression Heat the Street FaIRE!, which will be October 7th back on Indiana Street–and we need YOU!

To reserve a space for your art, theme camp, mutant vehicle, or performance, please email flambelounge (at) burningman (dot) com TODAY so we can accommodate and celebrate YOUR special contribution to this community. Fire performance and fire/steam art submissions must be in before Burning Man to support the fire permit process – earlier is definitely better, so tell us now if you would like to help us heat the street!

Decompression is organized through a large team of amazing volunteers. To be part of the process that makes Decompression so special each year, please email firekitty (at) burningman (dot) com.

Also in the works: the LA Decom is Saturday, October 13th! You can register to participate in that by e-mailing la (at) burningman (dot) com.

To find out about other Decoms and Regional Events in a city near you, see: http://regionals.burningman.com/.

While preparing for the playa, take a moment to plan how your art will make it to a local Decom and other regional events. That’s right! Take your art on the road!

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION – FIGMENT 2007

This is a call for participation for the Figment Festival on Governors Island in New York Harbor on Sunday, July 8. The Figment Festival is a new arts festival that will grow in the coming years with the help of a diverse group of New York area artists and community groups. Governors Island is a former military base in New York Harbor in full view of southern Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty.

This year, Figment will be a one-day celebration of creative culture held on Governors Island. All of the organizers and staff are volunteers, and the event will be open to the public. The guiding principles for the event roughly follow those of Burning Man and the regional burns.

Think of it as a picnic, with art… an art festival in the middle of New York harbor on a historic island with themed areas or events being created by the participants. Stage a scavenger hunt or farcical competition. Lead a yoga class or teach people to ballroom dance. Give gifts, facepaint, or take a walk around this beautiful place.

The Figment Festival is seeking any and all enthusiastic creators and do-ers to contribute content. What is content? Puppetry, costuming, sculpture, dance, performance art, installations and mobile “art-carts,” workshops, games, arts and crafts, sound art, and anything else you can imagine! You can set up your own area or host a scheduled event as you wish. What do you want to create to share with the community? Bring it out to Figment and try it out!

The festival will take place from 11am to 5pm. Art and installations can be set up as early as 10am, and in some cases may be able to be brought to the island the day before. Let us know if you need help!

More information about the festival is available on our website at http://www.figmentnyc.org (Please note that this is a temporary site. We expect to have our full site up in the next few days.)

If you have a project you would like contribute, please visit http://www.figmentnyc.org/participate for more information.

The event is being produced by Action Arts League (www.actionartsleague.org), a downtown NYC based not-for-profit arts association in collaboration with THE PURE PROJECT (www.thepureproject.com) and a coalition of NYC artists and community groups.
