Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 12, Issue #14
April 13, 2008

Greetings all!

OK yeah, you’re gonna want to grab your comfy chair and a tasty libation of choice, and settle in for a big issue. It’s the season when the flowers start blooming, all the events start cropping up, and the news really starts revving into high gear. In light of that, we’ll spare you, and keep this intro short and sweet.

First off, a heads-up that our Resources Issue is coming up in May or June … so if you’ve got an appropriate something you’d like to post, send it along to jackrabbitspeaks (at) burningman (dot) com, and put “POST REQUST: RESOURCES” in the subject line. The Resource Issue is our annual way of keeping all the announcements and links to things like EL wire, custom costumery, etc. in one place. We’re looking for playa-related resources that will make the Burner’s preparation experience that … much … better.

Soooo, let’s go! Do we have some goodies for ya, or what?! Start off in the “Latest News” section, for instance. Ever wanted to work for Burning Man (like, for reals)? Well, now’s your chance, kids! A couple job opportunities are opening up, and we’ve got an announcement for a new Department of Public Works (DPW) Production Assistant position to toss your way … watch for another to come down the pike soon.

If you’d like to help the Basura Sagrada Temple project come to fruition, Tucker offers a variety of ways you can contribute. Oh, and looky here … we’ve got a new funded art installation since our last issue, Bryan Tedrick’s “Spread Eagle”. That makes for grand a total of 38 funded art installations, all of which are now listed on our website, with URLs, contact information and images: http://www.burningman.com/installations/08_art_honor.html

Moving on, we relate an opportunity to help the “Tree Spires” playa art project get installed permanently in Seattle. We particularly like to see this kind of thing … playa artwork moving beyond the playa to enrich more lives. Artists take note: if you’re working to get (or have gotten) your playa artwork installed somewhere permanently after the event, let us know!

And finally in the news, as you may have figured out by now, the preferred method of transportation of Black Rock City (short of your furry boots workin’ the playa) is? The bicycle. Rat’s Bikes is once again helping out by offering rental bikes for participants coming in from beyond 1,000 miles from the playa. Clever idea, huh? Yeah, we thought so. Learn more below. Reserve yours now … they go fast from what we hear.

And now for a long list of events coming up. We’ve got the Flip Your Lid! BRAF fundraiser in San Francisco on Saturday, then InterFuse in Missouri, Toast! in Arizona, the Black Rock Rendezvous in the Black Rock Desert, and Dark Skies down in Mojave Drums, Arizona. Yep … we’re all over the place, and with quite a variety to boot. If you can’t make it to one of these events, well … make your own!

Finally, we throw a shout out to Gabe Kirchheimer, whose photography exhibition is currently under way in Salem, Oregon … in the grand spirit of meta, he send us along some nice snapshots of the exhibit, in case you can’t get to it in person. Find ’em down there in the Photos & Images section.

Hope your spring is treating you well so far. Burn on.

-PQ (Associate Rabbit)

BASURA SAGRADA TEMPLE NEWS

The 2008 Temple, Basura Sagrada: (http://www.basurasagrada.org), is seeking materials and financial support to make the project happen. Here’s the latest news from project manager Tucker Teutsch. He writes:

CONTRIBUTE YOUR JUNK…

Come add your junk to our sacred pile! You’ll find a list of items we are looking for on our website: http://www.basurasagrada.org. If you have something not on the list, lemme know about it. I’d hate for you to lug a pile of carpet down to the space just to have me tell you we can’t use it. Check out our website to learn about our junk collection run in Portland. And keep your eyes peeled for future junk runs in other cities. We will most likely do an LA run and a Santa Barbara run, so save your recycling and don’t throw the cool stuff away!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MAKE A TEMPLATE FOR THE TEMPLE …
One of the most exciting elements of this project is the ability to include the entire community in the process of constructing the temple. There is a very simple and fun way to do this.
In the past, inscriptions have been written on the lower walls of the temple during the event. While this will still happen, Basura Sagrada will take that a step further. Much of Shrine’s work consists of repeated shapes that create an impact from the accumulated whole. To that end, a series of templates will be published that can be cut out of cardboard, inscribed with prayers, blessings, dreams and losses, and sent in for assembly over the coming months. These pieces will be used to form design elements and flourishes throughout the temple. We are hoping as many people as possible will take part in the templates project, in order to have a large amount of “infused” material to work with.
Learn more here: http://basurasagrada.org/get-involved/templates/
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BECOME A TEMPLE CONTRIBUTOR …

We need over $100,000 to make the Basura Sagrada a reality. The sum is large, but not unattainable. By funding the Basura Sagrada you are ensuring the continued authentic tradition of communal sacred space at Burning Man. We have already received a generous art grant from Burning Man, providing us with necessary funds to move forward, and now, we come to you, generous members of the community, to provide the remaining contributions.

By partnering with a 501(c)3 organization, we are making all donations to the Basura Sagrada eligible for tax deduction.

Much love,

Gratefully,
Tucker Teutsch 3.0

SPREAD EAGLE: NEW HONORARIUM ART INSTALLATION ANNOUNCED

One of the funded art projects, Nowhere Omnibus, a contribution from London, was forced to cancel due to personal circumstances. While we’re very sorry about that, it affords us the opportunity to fund another project … and with that, we present:

Spread Eagle, by Bryan Tedrick, Glen Ellen, CA. tedrickart (at) sbcglobal (dot) net Spread Eagle features two wings symbolizing the possibility of transformation and the potential for higher yearnings. The work measures over 30′ wide and is kinetic, able to turn in the wind or by hand. Primarily built of steel and redwood, with found objects also incorporated into the weave. Wings are a vehicle to rise above, gain perspective, and release the earthbound. The American Eagle can represent the dream of regaining core values such as individual liberty and the unrestricted pursuit of happiness. http://www.bryantedrick.com

THE TREE SPIRES PROJECT: SUPPORT PERMANENT PLAYA ART IN SEATTLE!

While it’s our policy not to post random fundraisers in the JRS, this is one place where we definitely make an exception. Here’s an inspiring example of community-building playa artwork being installed permanently off-playa. In the spirit of bringing Burning Man culture and artwork to the world, this is something we can all get behind and support. Artists! If you’ve got artwork you’ve made for the playa that you’re looking to install somewhere permanently, let us know. Our good friend Tabasco (who designed and built the gorgeous Center Camp fire cauldron) writes:

“Happy Spring!

In 2007, the Iron Monkeys Art Collective, a Seattle-based metalworking crew, received a grant from Burning Man for our project, Tree Spires. The project consisted of four 15′ tall steel trees, each with a 6′ octagonal bench surrounding the trunk. On the playa, the trees were part of the Mangrove, the collection of recycled material trees surrounding the Man. These functional sculptures provided visitors with a place to sit, relax, observe and socialize.

Currently, we are nearing completion of the permanent installation of one of these trees in the Rainier Vista Park. We are thrilled about this project and its significance to our community as the first piece of Burning Man art permanently installed in the city of Seattle. A grant from the Black Rock Arts Foundation has funded much of the work required to recondition the steel and rebuild the bench seats of materials suitable to a long life in the Pacific Northwest. We have also worked with the Rainier Vista community to incorporate elements of their Whirligig project, including the text of the story the children wrote, into the backs of the bench seats.

See here for more on the history of the Rainier Vista Community Whirligig:
http://www.seedseattle.org/seedarts/publicart/collection/rvwhirligig.html

What do we need from you?
The cost of building materials, including concrete and steel, continues to rise and we are facing an anticipated budget shortfall of approximately $500 towards weatherproofing the tree and pouring the foundation on which the sculpture will be installed. We have already received many in-kind donations but now what we really need is cash. If you would like to support this project in its final stages, please consider making a donation now.

PayPal donations can be sent to:
tabasco (at) theblacksmithshop (dot) com

Donations via check can be sent USPS to:
Julie Vithoulkas
1471 20th Ave
Seattle WA 98122

What else?
In celebration of Arbor Day and the unveiling of this tree, we invite you to join us on Thursday, April 24th from 4 – 7 pm at the Rainier Vista Park. The Park is located at 4410 29th Ave S., on the west side of Martin Luther King Jr Way at South Genesee.

Many thanks in advance,

PHOTOS OF GABE KIRCHHEIMER’S GALLERY SHOW

OK, if only because we accidentally screwed up and said Gabe’s photography show was in Portland, when it was actually in Salem, we owe him one. But really, this is pretty cool anyway … it’s always great to see Burning Man photographs gracing the walls of galleries such as the Chemeketa Community College Art Gallery. The show runs through April 24th if you happen to be near SALEM. Salem. That’s Salem, Oregon, folks. Yep. Salem.
