Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 13, Issue #7
December 11, 2008

While it might be quite natural to assume November would be a pretty quiet month around Burning Man Headquarters, welllll … actually? Not so much.

We’ve recently emerged from our annual staff retreat at BMHQ, an intensive, five-day long process wherein we review what went down in the last year with a critical eye, and brainstorm ways to improve our collective future. Staffers and key managers focus on the development of the Burning Man event, supporting the spread of our principles through the Regional Network, as well as our own personal development as managers. And what do we have to show for it in the end? Well, our brains are like pudding, and we’ve documented scores of challenges and ideas on which we’ll be following up. By the way, all the feedback YOU submitted (through various means) is directly included in this process, so THANK YOU!

Our staff has also been busy writing their Afterburn Reports — Burning Man’s annual wrap up of all the activities and happenings that went into creating Burning Man 2008 — which will be published on our website in February 2009. Think nose to the grindstone, furrow to the brow, fingers to the keyboard. It’s like that.

Then we all went home to our families for Thanksgiving, because who can’t use a little more stress, right? Heh. Yeah.

So we’ve got some random stuff for you in this edition of the JRS, including lots of seeking. Burning Man is seeking temporary accounting help. Amy Stadler is seeking video of her giant bra. Tarotists are seeking people who got their picture taken at their camp. The Lost Arts Collective is seeking your participation in their New Years Eve Burn Night in Austin. And some of us are seeking a spare liver to survive December! Hoo boy.

Please do read on, if only because, well, you know: tree, forest, nobody around, etc.? Right.

Hope you’re all well.

SEEKING VIDEO OF THE GIANT BRA FROM 2006

Granted that might sound like we’re looking for a copy of a B-movie title, but Amy Stadler is looking for video footage of the giant bra she built for the Critical Tits ride of 2006 (ahhh yes, 2006 … now *that* was a ride to remember). We’ll let her tell you all about it:

“A Japanese media company has contacted me about the giant bra I built for the CT ride in 2006. They want to know if I have any video of it, which exist but only of the bra burning. They would like video of it pre-burning, for a television show sort of short pieces on quirky things.

The woman who contacted me somehow found it on this website [Editor’s Note: that’s a pretty *awesome* web page]:

I’m wondering how to find anyone who did videotape it earlier in the week in 2006. Was there anyone who was doing a documentary that year?

Thanks much for all your help.

~Amy”

BURN NIGHT IN AUSTIN TEXAS – NEW YEARS EVE

Now this is really cool. We don’t really have to blather on about how this is an inspiring example of bringing the Burn to the real world, do we? No, we do not. Help them out if you can, and if you can’t, then join us in saying: “Wow, that’s cool.” That in itself will make us plenty happy enough. Ms. Marrilee Ratcliffee, an Austin community heavy hitter of some reknown, writes:

“Hi,

My name is Marrilee Ratcliffe and I am writing in reference to what we believe is a very exciting paradigm push: the first Burn Night in the middle of a major metropolitan city. This coming New Year’s Eve our team, the Lost Arts Collective, will be burning down an elaborate, working, 34 foot tall wooden clock in the middle of Austin, Texas for an estimated crowd of 30,000. Basic details for the effigy design are here:http://sites.google.com/site/brcguy/ This goal has been a longtime in the making for us, endeavoring to bring the party to the people, the magic to the muggles. ; )

All construction, transportation and erection costs are covered. We have of course engaged our local Flipside community and will have hundreds of “Burners” in costume reaching out to other attendees – endeavoring to make the moment count. What we are looking for is fiduciary support to enhance the authenticity of what we have come to know as ‘Burn Night.’ We would like to introduce the concept of ‘gifting’ to the citizenry of Austin by handing out small tokens reminiscent of our project. Our current thinking involves creating small, acrylic clock gears with a simple message etched on them. We are reaching out to you for support in this effort. We are also reaching out to companies such as Tech Shop and Shop Bot for their in-kind assistance and can of course provide detailed design and cost proposals if this is something you can assist with.

Thank you for your attention here. Our team has accrued more years in the desert than we can count and we see projects like this as the natural evolution of our experience – making every city Black Rock City. We would relish an opportunity to talk more with you about this opportunity and, of course, if you’re looking for New Year’s plans we’re gonna have one hell of a celebration here in Texas and we’d love to have you!

Sincerely,

Marrilee Ratcliffe, Dave Umlas and the Lost Arts Collective
