{================================================} =================INTRODUCTION=================== {================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/***/**

We’ve got a whole mess of preview of Burning Man art, ready to dazzle your eyeballs, and boggle your brain. It comes from all corners of the Burning Man world, including the Burning Blog, the Burning Man website, and from the artists themsevles.

We are *really* excited about the artwork coming to the playa this year, and you probably are too. So in this edition of the Jack Rabbit Speaks, we’ve got a bunch of links for you to click and enjoy.

We want to express our sincere appreciation to all the hard-working artists out there who are working their butts off to create something beautiful, from their hearts, for our community to enjoy. You guys are the best … and we can’t wait to get out there and see the fruits of your labor.

If you’re so inclined and able to help out with funding some installations in need this year, see the Participate section … your generosity earns you the sincere gratitude of the entirety of Black Rock City.

MOZE’S ART PREVIEW

Perhaps unbeknownst to you, long-time Burner and Burning Man artist John Mosbaugh (aka Moze, aka Mooseballs) writes up a highly-entertaining and informative review of Burning Man art installations every year. This year, we asked him to publish it on the Burning Blog. Here it is, enjoy:

THE ARTERY

The Artery is the on-playa headquarters for Burning Man’s art department. To see all that they do, and don’t do, see:

ART TOURS

The Artery offers a variety of art tours. Pick the one that’s right for you:

Guided Art Tours
For those in need (e.g. you can’t get around to the artwork yourself on foot or by bike), there are art tours that depart on a bus daily from the Culture Labs, right next to the Artery. These limited seats are first come, first served, and first preference given to those in need. Tours are Tuesday – Friday at 11am. Check in at the Artery for details and tour availability.

Self-Guided Paper Tours
The Artery also provides written tours that you can pick up at the Artery, and create your own tour! Lead a tour with your friends … take ’em around in a pack of bikes, or do a tour with your Mutant Vehicle.

Audio Art Tours
The Artery’s Jim Tierney (aka Anarchist Cowboy) and Evonne Heyning have once again produced an awesome audio art tour, featuring great behind-the-scenes information about many of the Honorarium art installations. You can find the MP3s here, which you can download to your computer or iPod to bring with you:

WANT TO BRING YOUR ART TO THE PLAYA THIS YEAR?

If you haven’t registered your art yet, and you want to bring it to the playa, you still can! Download and fill out the art registration PDF, and bring it with you to the Artery, found on the Esplanade & 6:30. Here’s the PDF:

DON’T LOCK YOUR BIKE TO THE ART

This may sound stupid, but (well) every year people lock their bikes to art installations … as if they were giant bike racks. Which? They’re not. Sometimes this results in a) the lock having to be cut before the piece is burned, or b) the bike being burned with the piece. Neither is cool. Avoid it by … guess what? … not locking your bike to the artwork in the first place. Done and done.

HELP FUND AN ART INSTALLATION!

Some of the Honorarium art installations are in need of some final bits of funding to see their projects through to the end. As you may or may not know, Burning Man’s grant program gives out hundreds of thousands of dollars in art grants, and, as those funds are distributed across a large number of pieces, projects often get partial funding. So artists will do fundraisers and the like, WHILE working on their projects, which is a tall order indeed. Sometimes, their fundraising efforts fall short (and this economy certainly is no help).

If you’d like to help out, these projects could use a financial boost. Visit their websites for donation links.

Fire of Fires – The Temple for Burning Man 2009
http://communityartmakers.com/fund-raising
“This year’s temple crew is in the home stretch before hitting the playa. We’re literally looking at the last 10 sheets of plywood running through our CNC machine; 10 sheets of almost 1,500. We’ve acquired all the materials to make the vortex of fire run up the center of our Temple. We’ve ordered all the lighting. We’re holding a check to pay the big rig drivers. And then we’re out of money. You love the temple? Wanna thank the crew who made it happen by helping to feed ’em for the two weeks we’re on Playa before the gates open? I know you do! We may be from Texas, but there’s only so many meals in a row we can serve breakfast tacos to the crew. : ) Thanks in advance for your consideration. It has been our sincere, humble honor to have dedicated ourselves to this gift for our community for the past two months.”

Raygun Gothic Rocketship
http://raygungothicrocket.com
“This full-scale 40′ tall retro-futuristic rocketship is being constructed by the crew that brought you the Steampunk Treehouse. Our large crew has been working full bore, 7 days a week, to complete all the structural steel framework, the aluminum sheeting, and the incredible interactive experiences inside. We’ve been doing fundraisers, applying for grants, and taking private donations. Despite all that, our funds are dwindling, and we could use an extra push to get across the finish line and make this happen. We thank you!”

Gee-Gnome!
http://thegee-gnomeproject.blogspot.com/
“This 5′ gnome shoots a 70′ flame out of the top of its head, and we’re really excited about how it’s coming along (you just haven’t lived until you see a gnome shooting fire). Thing is, we are now digging into their personal pockets to finish the project, and can use your help to make it a reality. Thank you so much!”

FishBug
http://www.fishbug.net
“Chimera Sententia is a sinuous, steel-based kinetic sculpture that expresses the process of evolution. It describes a living, breathing creature whose fiery form reveals its genetic past and present and whose future can only be imagined by the images projected from within its translucent skull. As this incredible sculpture is nearing completion, we find we are running short of funds. Each of the artists involved in the build is asking friends and family for contributions. Will you help us bring the Fishbug to the public? You can help with the finishing touches and make FishBug beautiful! I thank you, the entire team thanks you and the Fishbug thanks you.”

Soma
http://flaminglotus.com
“Flaming Lotus Girls are working our hearts out to get the FLG art piece “Soma” ready for the playa. We leave in 15 days and are facing a major budget crisis. We have spent every penny we have making Soma and she is worth it a million times over. We are hitting a financial crises and are asking our community to help by donating to help create spectacular, shining sparkling fire art. We are gearing up for those long nights of fire and fun on the playa, the sting of alkali in our sinuses and the sweet smell of propane. We can’t wait to be there. With love and lipstick kisses, Flaming Lotus Girls.”

RESPECT FOR THE ART: IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING, BUT….

We hope you’ll help us with this one. We have very few out and out RULES, really, in BRC, but there’s one very serious thing that really must be called a rule: Unless you made it, don’t vandalize artwork.

Yeah, we know “it’s Burning Man, man … don’t harsh my mellow … it’s my creative expression, man!” Yeah, no. Messing with somebody else’s art just isn’t cool … unless of course they expressly imply that their piece is meant to be messed with, written on, etc.

Having created art, this Rabbit is here to tell ya: it blows when somebody else vandalizes your work. So please, help keep an eye on the artwork and treat it with respect, and if you see someone tagging, vandalizing, manhandling or climbing something fragile or unsound, or heaven forbid, stealing a piece of art, do your part and talk to them, or contact a Ranger if you’re not equipped to deal with it yourself. There’s plenty of room on the playa for eveyrone’s art and expression without us having to do it all over each others’ work.
