{================================================} =================INTRODUCTION=================== {================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/***/**

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, people come to Burning Man from all OVER the place. And the great majority of you proooobably need to make a pit stop on the way to the playa to load up on supplies, grab a last shower, offer up a last prayer to the god of civilization, or whatever it is people do.

Well, whichever direction you’re coming from (even if it’s the air), we’re here to help you out by pointing you at some resources in the smattering of towns that encircle the Black Rock Desert.

From the West or South (or flying in), we’ve got Reno covered. From the Northwest, Cedarville. From the East, we got Lovelock and Fernley. And then, when you get up close to the playa, our favorite small desert towns, Gerlach and Empire.

And on your way out, we’ve got your tip for car washes, recycling and … showers. Mmmmm showers.

Please pay all these towns the utmost respect on your way through. They are our year-round neighbors in the high desert, and we appreciate them for always being so welcoming as we invade their Nevada backyard every year. Remember, you represent our community. When patronizing any local businesses, please be respectful and courteous (wear your shoes and shirt and all – you’re not at Burning Man yet), and Leave No Trace.

And hey, we’ll be seeing you guys soon. Real soon like.

-Will
(Associate Rabbit)

FULL-BLOWN RENO INFORMATION

To help you make the most of your time in Reno, whether it’s for an hour’s pit-stop or multi-day layover, Burning Man’s website has an annually-updated, incredibly deep and broad section of information about Reno’s most Burner-friendly supermarkets, curiosity shops, hardware stores, water, restaurants, hotels, recycling, and garbage disposal — you name it — all mapped out for your navigational planning (which is no mean feat in Reno).

These pages were painstakingly created by a dedicated team of Burners who’ve called Reno home for years … they know whereof they speak, and they share their insider information to prove it. We think you’ll find it worthy of a bookmark in your web browser. Check it out:

RENO-TAHOE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

The folks at Reno-Tahoe International Airport tell us that 15,000 Burners have been coming through the airport each of the past few years – WOW, that’s like almost 1-in-3 participants! – making Burning Man the second-most busy time of the year for the airport. We’ve therefore compiled information and a list of resources that will help make your travel through RTIA as smooth-sailing as possible. Check it out here:

AIR PLAYA INFO RETURNS TO RENO-TAHOE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Through the coordinated efforts of the Burning Man Project, the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, and local and international resources, Air Playa Info was established in 2008 and returns to provide information and resources for travelers on their way from the airport to Burning Man.

Located next to Baggage Claim inside the airport, volunteers at the Air Playa Info table help answer your questions, provide directions and maps, share information about BRC and all kinds of Reno-area resources, and coordinate your rideshare and shuttling options.

Air Playa Info will be available from Friday, August 28 through Friday, September 4.

More info: http://bit.ly/2LojV

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/***/**

VOLUNTEER WITH AIR PLAYA INFO AT THE RENO TAHOE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

So, are you looking for a volunteer opportunity? Want to assist people coming to Burning Man from all points around the globe? Air Playa Info will operate from 9:00a – 10:00p Friday [pre-event] through Friday [event] at the Reno Tahoe International Airport. We’re still looking for some volunteers to staff the table — particularly later in the week (Sept. 2-4). Parking will be validated for confirmed volunteers, and a shuttle bus might be available.

If interested, please email: AirPlaya (at) att (dot) net

THE CELTIC FOREST ART INSTALLATION IN RENO THROUGH DEC. 1

Located on the corner of Sierra Street and Island Avenue, on the bank of the Truckee River in Downtown Reno, Nevada.

Previously exhibited at Burning Man in 2008, “Celtic Forest: Book of the Raven” (conceptualized by Laura Kimpton and created by artists Jeff Schomberg, Antonio Ruperto, and Bob Hofmann) has transformed an empty lot in downtown Reno into a dramatic interactive art installation, performance venue and community gathering spot.

HOT SPOTS AROUND THE RENO / BLACK ROCK DESERT AREA?

You want to check things out a bit? Well, you should … the area around Reno and the Black Rock Desert is plenty beautiful and interesting, with wild horses, wildflowers, historic spots, hot springs, Pyramid Lake, and more. We have a round-up of some things to see and do in the area, here:

FROM THE NORTHWEST: CEDARVILLE

The town of Cedarville, CA is a great stop if you’re coming to Black Rock City from the northwest on Route 299. Their chamber of commerce and the people of the town are opening welcome arms to traveling Burners, and working hard to support us. More info and a list of businesses here:

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/***/**

FROM THE EAST: LOVELOCK

Set on the western edge of “Cowboy Country,” Lovelock, the County Seat of Pershing County, is the last major pit stop on I-80 heading west before you veer north to the playa. Great place to stop, get your sleep on, get your supplies-gathering on, while enjoying some history. Get the details here:

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/***/**

FROM THE EAST: FERNLEY

West of Lovelock, and thus closer to the 447 exit off of I80 is Fernley, NV, a two-exit city with some great things to offer. More information about what’s available in Fernley can be found here:

GERLACH CAR WASH

Ranger Keeper reminds us:

“Wanted to remind folks out there that when the dust has settled and it’s time to roll home, they can stop off at the ***Gerlach Car Wash*** and drive home in decadence!

The Car Wash will be open on Sunday and Monday from 8 AM – 6 PM. We use the Post Office parking lot, visible from the drive through town.

Cost is $10 per car, and $25 per RV.

Proceeds go to benefit the Gerlach Schools student body, supporting them in all kinds of extra curricular activites (sports, field trips, the arts, etc.) throughout the school year.

Thanks for giving back to this local community… they need our support!”

EMPIRE STORE

As you may have heard through the grapevine, the Empire Store (the only store within 60 miles of Black Rock City) changed management since the last Burn, and concerns had arisen about their ability to cope with the onslaught of Burning Man participants headed their way. We’ve talked to the new owners, and they assure us they’ll be open, stocked, and ready for us — with some caveats.

One: there will be no ATM machine … there WILL be one at Bruno’s Country Club in Gerlach. Two: they’re having issues with their gasoline deliveries and may not have fuel; there is a Gerlach Shell station. Plan accordingly. (Note: It’s always a good idea to fuel up BEFORE entering the desert itself, so as to avoid creating (or joining) a backup in Gerlach during Exodus.)

It’s important to remember, by the way, that the Empire Store is a smaller store about the size of your average convenience store … it’s not a gigantic grocery store. If you’re going to need to stock up on TONS of stuff for your Burn, you’ll want to do that shopping in Reno. But the Empire Store is a great resource for the essentials you need, especially the “D’oh! I forgot toothpaste,” or “We can’t do the project without that spatula!” kind of thing, or to pick up a last 6-pack of beer. Plus, they have ice cream, which will look like EDIBLE SOLID GOLD about the time you’re rolling through Empire, believe us.

We want to say that we really appreciate our (current and former) friends at the Empire Store, and thank for them for their efforts to serve our participants.
