Greetings from lovely Black Rock City … today the Man was picked and placed atop its pedestal, amidst a tangled bank of 2’x4’s. Tonight, the Man Base lighting team gets to work installing all the lighting effects. The crown flags were just placed atop the Center Camp Cafe this morning. Burning Man Information Radio (BMIR 94.5 FM) is live and on the air, and by tonight, will be feeding a live stream out to the world (watch the Burning Man website for details). The water trucks are starting to cruise the streets. More and more artists and theme camp crews are arriving and starting to set up. And … it’s hot today.
This JRS is chock full of all the bizarre and interesting last-minute post requests we get around this time of year. It’s always a hoot to pick through the rich cultural diversity that is our community. There’s important information, good tips, and fun stuff in which to participate. It’s worth taking a short break from tossing your playa gear in your totes to give it a read-through.
So this maaaay be our last JRS before the event starts (but admittedly, one never knows what’s gonna happen around here – AG is making noise about at least one more ish, but the playa can eat the best laid plans, so we’ll see). And so, to cap off this Burn Year’s JRS (lucky Volume 13), we’d like to say that it’s an honor to serve you. We sincerely hope that you’ve been informed, entertained, and been made to feel that much more connected to Burning Man, year round.
We very much look forward to seeing you on playa. If you run into us, please do say hello.
-Will
(Associate Rabbit)

DO NOT ARRIVE EARLY WITHOUT AN EARLY ARRIVAL PASS!
As excited as you may be to get here, don’t forget … you can’t get in before 12:01am on Monday unless you have an Early Arrival Pass. If you show up early without a pass, you’re gonna get stuck in D Lot, and it’s not very much fun to be sssssso close and have to wait it out. So don’t – please try to time your arrival as accurately as you can, rather than thinking you’ll just queue up a few hours early and wait.

BURNING MAN EARTH LAUNCHES ONLINE DIRECTORY, IPHONE APP, & API
Now there are more ways than ever to connect with people and information in Black Rock City. In addition to the Playa Information Digital Directory, which has long served our community, Burning Man Earth is launching an online directory, an API, and a beta iPhone application this year.
The Burning Man Earth group is comprised of artists, coders, and software developers who have been closely collaborating with the Burning Man organization to create tools which help participants locate others, schedule and find theme camp events, artwork, and much more. The project is aimed at providing a digital space which encompasses and reflects the entire event and community, both in BRC and in archival form, long after the dust has settled.
The site, http://earth.burningman.com, builds upon GeoDjango and Pinax to create an easy-to-use interface. Burning Man’s API now enables developers and artists alike to remix and reuse publicly-available data from the event. To set up your user profile and mark your camping spot for this year, go to:
The APIs are also the foundation for a new beta iPhone app, which serves as both a directory and enhanced GPS designed to navigate the event. This year a limited number of participants will get to try out the app.
Burning Man Earth is more than radical self-expression, self-reliance, and community. The harsh conditions of the Black Rock Desert make the system a perfect testbed for mapping temporary places, people, and things. In the future, these tools may be helping disaster-hit regions react and respond. It could well turn out to be a tool for tomorrow’s world.
Come see us at Center camp & 10:30.

HOW TO TAKE GREAT PICTURES AT BURNING MAN
You a shutterbug? Want to take great photos at Burning Man (without being a douche about it)? Well, we now gots this super-comprehensive photographer’s guide, created by Matt Freedman. It’s fascinating reading, even if you’re not a pro photographer, for reals:

GREETER OUTPOST CAMPS
Dragon, of the Greeters, writes:
“This year Greeters are extending ourselves to help the participants in the city with helpful information. There are five camps that have been designated as Outpost Camps and are there to serve as block captains for their areas of the city. Each camp is designated with a Greeter pennant and will have warm welcomes for those that want to redeem their Welcome spanking coupons. These camps will welcome you and offer what assistance they can wether it be directions, a place to rest and regroup or other information. Need advice on how to secure your gear, tents and other helpful tips for surviving the event, come see one of the Outposts camps. They can also assist in pointing out some of the features of their camps and neighborhoods. So if you see the Greeter symbol flag, stop in and say hello.
The camps are :
AEZ
Disorient
Greeters Camp
Silicon Village
Tsunami”
And to this we say … cool.

BE SAFE AT BURNING MAN
Your personal safety at Burning Man is your responsibility. It’s self- reliance, yo. We can only take care of each other in a community if we make certain we’re taking primary responsibility for ourselves.
Just a friendly reminder, and a pointer to some useful info about that:

BIG SOUND CAMP MUSIC CALENDAR 2009
OK OK, we know. Some people hate big sound camps, some love ’em. This Rabbit? Happens to like to dance … to each their own, y’all. If you want to know who’s playing where, check out the Rockstar Librarian’s Big Sound Camp Music Calendar for 2009. She writes:
“It’s my 4th year gathering up the biggest and most anticipated big sound camp DJ and music line-ups and once again, and it’s available for you online! Will there be a Deep End incarnation? When will Bassnectar rock Root Society again? What big name DJs will be rawkin’ the decks? It’s all here baby! Come n’ get it!

AFRICAN AMBASSADORS AT AFRICA GALACTICA
File this one under “very cool”:
“Africa Galactica humbly welcomes new African Ambassadors to Black Rock City and invites all citizens to come meet them.
Bajah, Dovy, and A-Klazz will touch down in BRC on Monday, having journeyed from one of the far corners of the world: Sierra Leone, West Africa. Staying at the playa’s only five star hotel, The Grand Hotel Ashram Galactica, the cultural ambassadors will play multiple shows on stages around the playa (schedule to be posted at the Africa Galactica base at the hotel), and will conduct a mystical West African ritual for the bravest desert travelers.
Deep playa, Thursday night, two hours after sunset – intrepid desert travelers should look for the bonfire. Expect masked devils, traditional dancers, tribal fire, and a secret society initiation rite.
To participate, go to http://www.africagalactica.com and fill out the form. The ambassadors will be especially pleased with experienced drummers, West African dancers, and those who can make magic.”

GERLACH GOINGS ON
Our very own Trixie (who holds down Burning Man’s Gerlach office year round, and who we love dearly), writes in with some info about things going on in Gerlach:
“Bruno’s Country Club now has an ATM Machine, it is the only one within our area now. Bruno’s is also serving vegan burgers, these are new this year and different from veggie burgers I’m told.
The VFW Ladies Auxiliary’s annual Yard Sale/Bake Sale/Raffle will be held Aug. 29 & 30, from 8:30am to 4pm both days.
The Aux. will also hold a Bake Sale at the Senior Citizens in Gerlach in which will be held on Sept. 6th & 7th.
The Gerlach Schools Car Wash will also be held on Sept.6th and 7th, at the Gerlach Post Office.”

HIGH DESERT BICYCLES OFFERING A BURNER DISCOUNT
Tinkerbelle lets us know:
“High Desert Bicycles is giving a 10% discount to anyone with a burner ticket: I got my bikes geared (greased, etc.) up for BM there; they still have some EL wire for sale. Corner of Virginia St. and Mount Rose St, 1527 Virginia St., Reno. They also help with the playa “afterburn” bike cleanup.”

RENO TRADER JOE’S HAVING SPECIAL BURNER HOURS
Louie writes:
“hi, i am a burner(2001-2006) and one of the asst. managers of trader joes in reno. just want to let you know. we will be staying open until 10pm (normal hours 9am-9pm) on fri (29th), sat(30th) and sun(31st) for the burners.
hope this info helps.

ENTHEON VILLAGE SHARING THEIR WASTE DISPOSAL CONTAINERS
While we’re BIG BIG fans of radical SELF-reliance, some people just don’t have the wherewithal to make it happen (ridesharing folks without their own transpo, for example), and sometimes working together as a community is the best solution to our common challenges. Honestly, we don’t know if it’s too late to get in on this, so make sure you get in touch with them, and get a response BEFORE assuming it’s a done deal. Bita writes:
“This is Bita, the Mindful Waste Management bee at Entheon Village and there is great news I want to share with you.
This year, Entheon is stepping up as a community to help us all leave the teensiest footprint possible after we have all enjoyed ourselves at the Burn. Wehee!
To this end, we have hired some very large containers to hold our trash, compost & recycling whilst on the playa, and then be picked up by other -mindful- waste management individuals for delivery to each respective recycling station, to act upon the most environmentally efficient disposal solution for the waste that is generated en masse!
We love this idea so much that we want to make the most of the service we have hired, and so are willing to sell some of the container space we have, for the same price it costs us of course, to other camps who want to do the right thing with their compost, trash & recycling, but who do not have the time/resources/knowledge to make a ‘green’ decision.
So we would like to invite such camps to contact us before the burn so we can make appropriate adjustments to accommodate space in our containers.
Please advise them to contact: info (at) ev (dot) com.
Boomshakalak.”

HEEBEEGEEBEE HEALING OASIS NEEDS MASSAGE TABLES
The Heebeegeebee-ers write:
“Do you or someone you know have a folding massage table sitting around somewhere? Bring it to the playa and donate it to the Heebeegeebee Healers of Nectar Village! We provide free healing services to thousands of individuals every year during the Burning Man event, and hope that the energy we cultivate spreads into the greater world, creating love, health and a higher state of being for everyone. Your table will be used to benefit the community of Black Rock City for years to come. (No really, we’re really short on tables this year, and it would suck not to be able to get a session not because we don’t have awesome healers available but because we have no massage table for you to relax upon.)”

WOMEN’S HEALTH SURVIVAL KIT – AKA UTIs SUCK, DON’T GET ONE
The Women’s Community Clinic writes:
“Burning Woman Survival Kit Helps Reduce Sexual Health Problems at Burning Man.
A little preparation and good hygiene can ensure Burning Man doesn’t turn you into a Burning Woman.
Every September, the Women’s Community Clinic gets a rush of yeast infections, sexually transmitted infections and other gynecological concerns from women and their partners.
Why? Burning Man.
The mixture of dust, heat, lack of showers and desert revelry send many women home with unpleasant “after burns.”
To help women and their partners avoid infections and other irritable souvenirs from Black Rock City, the Women’s Community Clinic has created a Burning Woman Survival Kit:
http://www.womenscommunityclinic.org/site/avoiding-the-after-burn/
Please pass along to your friends.”
**/**/**/**/**/**/**/***/**
A LESS DANGEROUS REBAR
Don’t want to impale people? How nice of you. Dave offers this tip:
“A less dangerous type of stake for the playa can be made by using a long piece of pipe to bend your rebar over into a two-pronged stake. Start with a piece a bit over two feet long. These still pound in nicely but you have a rounded top rather than a more dangerous single spike. They are also much easier to attach cord too. You can use pink or orange flagging tape to mark your cords…”
**/**/**/**/**/**/**/***/**
IDEAL BIKE CHAIN LUBRICANT
If you’re into kinky sex with bike chains, here’s the lube for you. Dave reports:
“A really good chain lubricant for bikes on the playa is White Lightning, a teflon based lubricant that isn’t based on grease and less likely to gum up the chain with playa dust.”
Make a note that – especially if you’re not using this stuff, be sure to clean your chain before you lube it, or playa dust turns into paste.

BLACK ROCK BOUTIQUE NEEDS YOUR CLOTHES
Citizens of black rock city, the Black Rock Boutique needs your help. This year we have built a new huge and awesome structure and need lots more clothes to fill it. LETTERBOXING IN BLACK ROCK CITY
Letterboxing combines creativity with treasure hunting all over the globe. Participants seek out hidden letterboxes by cracking codes and following clues. The prize: a miniature art print in the form of a unique hand carved rubber stamp.
Letterboxers carry a personal journal (something small like a memo pad) to stamp their discoveries in, then they use their own hand carved rubber stamp, called a signature stamp, in a book kept with the letterbox. If they feel like it, they may add a personal note. Carbon Dioxide Camp invites you to participate in this easy, fun art exchange. Create a signature stamp and or a letterbox and hide it in your camp, work of art or mutant vehicle. Post clues to
… under BLACK ROCK CITY, NV. Atlas Quest is also a great place to start if you’ve never made a stamp or letterbox before, they have full instructions. Carbon Dioxide Camp will copy all clues posted to the atlas quest site before Sunday August 30th to Playa Info for posting. If you miss the deadline you can post it yourself to Playa Info. You’re going to be riding all over the place visiting art, people, cafes theme camps and porta-potties why not make an adventure out of it.
Thanks

SACRED SPACES VILLAGE … CALLING ALL PERFORMERS & ENTERTAINERS
WE WANT YOU!!!!!!! (And your talent, of course…)
We are envisioning, dreaming, planning, shaping and co-creating a LIVE multi-media event for Thursday night at the Sacred Spaces Village entitled “SACRED SOIREE,” and it won’t be the same without you! Imagine, if you will, a “heart-centered extravaganza of sound, sight and spirit,” and then imagine yourself, center-stage, moving people to tears of joy, whoops of delight, shouts of approval, thunderous applause, or–even better– ecstatic, impassioned participation with you!
If you have something to contribute to this event, holler back and pitch us your ideas!!! Whether you would like to be part of the “house band,” perform a solo act, sing/dance/whatever as part of an ensemble, contribute original music for others to interpret, or anything else you can think of, there is room for you on this bus!! There is also no time to spare, so get those cards and letters coming and rest assured that we will get back in touch–either on- or off- group. Thanks for “coming out to play,” and have wonderful weekend!
In Harmony,

JOIN THE MARCH OF THE GOLDEN CALF
Having tested the theory on a small scale last year, this year the entire Golden Cafe will be marching forth, our golden calf carried aloft before us, art cars and liquor following, on FRIDAY THE 4th. We have with us shield bearers who can slot their shields together to form mobile bars, and a variety of other tricks to support a growing horde of drunken revelers and vehicles. If your camp would like us to drop by, or if you would like to join us in our messianic quest for a good time, please let me know ASAP so that we can plan accordingly.

GOLDEN CAFE SEEKS MUSICIANS
The Golden Cafe is a cocktail lounge and live music venue in its 7th year. Our emphasis is on improvised music and jam sessions, covering all styles and genres, but we’ve been known to host other forms of performance as well. For 2009 we’re also introducing recording facilities, to give the default world a taste of BRC. If you have a taste for an intimate venue in which to connect with your audience and with other performers, we invite you to drop on by.

A CLEVER NEIGHBORHOOD GARBAGE COLLECTION IDEA
Sharon writes:
“i just thought i would pass this on: last year everyday we would take a body size garbage bag to the top of our street, had the camps pass it down for litter. we would pick up at the end of street. if for some reason it did not make it to the end of street, being someone broke the chain, we would search out the bag. having the bag decorated with our street name seemed to work the best. this keep our street looking good, and it was helpful to newbies who did not come prepared with enough garbage bags. after the first day the camps are in the swing of of it and are expecting the bags to pass to their camp. it also makes it a way for neighboring camps to get aquainted. the garbage bags are placed in our large toy hauler and taken out. it is kinda like having your own garbage service. anyway it seemed to work great for our street so i thought i would pass it along. sharon ..aka brc optical camp”
