**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**
Hey y’all, time to buckle down, cuz we’re popping out JRSs on a weekly basis, bite-sized like. Cuz tell ya what, there’s going to be a lot coming down the pike between now and the event. That’s just how it gets.
Like last issue, a good chunk of solid stuff this week, including the impending deadlines for art installation and Mutant Vehicle registration (next week!), and deadlines for submitting your business for the Burning Man Resource Listing, and your playa event – if you want it in the printed What Where When Guide, that is. The printed version of the playa events, the WhWhWh is always on a tight schedule and this year is no exception – many thanks to the awesome volunteers and staffers from Burning Man Earth, Tech, and Playa Info, all hard at work on the improved submission tool you see below. Now start telling us what you’ve got planned!
And something vets and new Burners alike can cheer about: the announcement that Planning is reorienting Gate Road in an effort to redirect dust that tends to flow through the middle of Black Rock City – right up the ol’ 6 o’clock road.
TONIGHT is the Desert Arts Preview, our annual peek at the honorarium projects planned in Black Rock City. See presentations on Syzygryd, Subway, the Temple of Flux, and more of the incredible art (http://www.burningman.com/installations/10_art_honor.html) that’s being dreamed up for Metropolis 2010. Bay Area burners – join us! Not here? Stay tuned for an online webcast of the event coming soon.
You might notice, we’re getting very excited for the Burn … we can only guess you are too. To connect with others and hear even more updates as you get your preparations in high gear, visit our Facebook Page:

or connect on the ePlaya:

MUTANT VEHICLE AND ART INSTALLATION REGISTRATION DEADLINES LOOMING
The deadline apply for a Mutant Vehicle license is June 30, and the deadline to to register your art installation is July 1. That’s a week away, kids. Get on it!

BURNING MAN RESOURCE LISTING SUBMISSIONS END FRIDAY JUNE 25
The last day to submit your business for the Burning Man Resource Listing is this Friday, June 25th. We revisit and take entries for this page once a year to support Burners finding Burning Man related resources within our own community, and it isn’t our practice to repeatedly spam our readers with products to buy; late submissions cannot be accepted.
Fill out the form here to be shared on the annual JRS Resource Listing Page:

ADD YOUR PLAYA EVENTS TO THE PLAYA INFO DIRECTORY BEFORE JULY 1
If you want your playa event to be included in the printed What Where When guide that’s handed out at the Greeters’ Station, add it to the Playa Info Directory before July 1. Submissions received after 7/1/10 (or after the first 960 received, whichever comes first) will still be available to all in the online version of the Directory, but cannot be included in the print version of the What Where When.

GATE ROAD 2010 REORIENTED TO REDUCE DUST IN BLACK ROCK CITY
One of the main causes of some persistent dust blowing through Black Rock City is that which is kicked up by cars traveling Gate Road (the road from Highway 34, through the Gate, and on to the Greeters’ Station). Since Gate Road is traditionally aligned such that it aims directly at the 6:00 radial arm of Black Rock City, the prevailing wind (from the southwest) usually carries all the dust right through the heart of the city.
In an experiment to reduce the amount of dust in BRC, the Black Rock City Planning Department has reoriented Gate Road such that the prevailing winds will carry the dust alongside, rather than through, Black Rock City.
It should be noted that Mother Nature has a long and storied history of being as unpredictable as all get-out there on the Black Rock Desert, and the concept of “prevailing winds” is dubious at best. It should also be noted that you shouldn’t expect a miraculous, dust-free year in Black Rock City, because that would be dreaming hard. Bring your all-weather gear; there’s dust at Burning Man.
And remember, no matter which way it’s oriented, always always ALWAYS observe the 10mph speed limit on Gate Road, and 5mph when approaching the Gate and Greeters’ Station. This, too, helps keep down the dust in BRC, and for a vehicle driven in a pedestrian city, it’s the safest practice all around.

STEAMPUNK TREEHOUSE INSTALLED AT DELAWARE BREWERY
Remember how we told you that the Steampunk Treehouse (seen on playa here: http://bit.ly/cabSOL) was slated to be installed in the East Coast, but we couldn’t tell you where? Well, now we can. We’re happy to announce that The Steampunk Treehouse is now officially installed at Dogfish Head Brewery in Milton, Delaware. Says so right there on the Dogfish blog:
It’s also been pointed out to us that it was discovered during the install that SeanO giggles like a little girl and kicks his legs uncontrollably when playing pinball.
Congratulations, guys! And SeanO, please try and maintain some decorum. 😉

INSTRUCTABLE: HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN “EARS” STYLE HAT
She’s naked. We’re not sure why. But she’s naked. It’s awful cute, and … highly informative.
“Hello!
I recently posted an instructional you tube video about how to make your own ‘ears’ style hat to you tube.
I think there are many JRS readers who would find it helpful:

THE KINETIC CAB COMPANY
This is pretty damn cool. Katy writes:
“The Kinetic Cab Company is a funded Burning Man Honorarium Art Project assembled by a collective of Kinetic Artists and others interested in supporting human powered transportation. The Kinetic Cab Company Theme Camp supports the Cab Company in Black Rock City and beyond – this theme camp is a team of Burners dedicated to providing the citizens of Black Rock City with an interactive Taxicab experience. Our Dispatch Center serves as the starting point for tours, airport trips and the like. The Center is also the home of a fantastic Kinetic Gallery experience, and the center of the Kinetic Culture at Burning Man.
Participation is key to the cab company. We offer rides around the Black Rock metropolis where the “fare” is collected in human power. During daylight hours, several Kinetic Cabs host art tours. We also host a Kinetic Airport Shuttle. Tours depart the Kinetic Cab Company regularly, please be prepared with water, sunscreen and everything else you will need to survive a Kinetic Cab Art Tour. Be sure to sign up for all tours well in advance, as they are popular!
Thursday, September 2nd, 4:20pm starts – The Great Black Rock City Kinetic Sculpture Race and Treasure Hunt. Kinetic Sculptures will race around Black Rock City collecting “treasures” from other theme camps (for race points). Be on the lookout for this spectacular event.”

THE BURNING MAN ULTRAMARATHON
Are you batsh!t crazy? OK, then this is for you. Cherie writes:
“The Burning Man Ultramarathon will be a true test for the hardcore runners: in the desert, in the middle of the crazy, wonderful, hot, sandy, sweaty Burning Man festival, runners will face a series of loops around the perimeter, past The Man and The Temple, past various artworks, through part of the main camp of Burning Man to run 50 kilometers (31 miles).
Participants can attire themselves however they would like (the more entertaining, the better), but should wear running sneakers and carry at least one bottle of water. There will be 2-3 aid stations with water and running snacks (and we welcome volunteers to help dispensing the water and assist the runners with cheers, hydration, snacks, and sweaty hugs), and runners can leave drop bags at the main aid station. All finishers will receive finishers’ medals and lots of love.

GUINNESS BOOK RECORD FOR MOST HUGS IN 24 HOURS BY ONE PERSON
We’ve got another would-be record-breaker on our hands, folks. Last time it was Superman, this time it’s hugs. And it’s for a good cause (read on), so open your arms up wide, and participate! Matt writes:
“This summer at Burning Man 2010, I am organizing to break The Guinness Book of World Records, records for:
1.) Most hugs given by one person in a 24 hour period (Current record is 7,777 hugs)
2.) Biggest ‘Group Hug’ that has ever been documented! (Current record is 6,625 people)
These events will be video documented by a professional videographer and the footage will be spread virally via the internet acting as a catalyst to bring more love into the world yes, but it is also filling bellies.
These events are non-profit for charity and are sponsored by several food producers who are giving FOOD TO PEOPLE THAT ARE HUNGRY AND IN NEED OF FOOD, in support of our hug events!
Let’s connect and collaborate!
If you would like to participate and/or would like to remain informed as this project develops, please join us and become a ‘fan’ of facebook.com/gimmeahug so that you can be notified before Burning Man, as to which day of the week, what time and what location at the Burning Man festival, we will be coming together for these two events.
To break the Guinness Book of World Records records, we need just under 8,000 people to share in a GROUP HUG AT BURNING MAN!!
Our goal is to have at least HALF of the people we need to break the record, connect with us on facebook.com/gimmeahug prior to attending Burning Man, so we are not trying to pull this together last minute…!
Become a fan today and invite your friends to do the same. Please message us with any questions or comments you have.
See you at Burning Man with open arms-
Matt Roberts”

MEGATROPOLIS: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF A CITY
Kiwi Chris writes from New Zealand:
“I would like to introduce you all to our Art Project for Burning Man 2010.
MEGATROPOLIS is a massively collaborative project on a scale that only rarely happens outside Burning Man. The scale has inspired many groups and artists to pledge their time, experience, resources, and fundraising capabilities to this project. And while we have many people busting their little hearts out planning and running fundraisers across the globe, we are calling on the distributed Burning Man community for support.
Taking the form of six unique and iconic buildings, the tallest of which will reach 54’ into the desert sky, MEGATROPOLIS will be a site to behold.
Not only a major visual artwork in its own right, but an interactive environment which festival participants will be invited to fill with art, theatre, music, and community orientated activity. If you are interested in bringing art or performance to MEGATROPOLIS please contact me chrishankins54 (at) gmail (dot) com MEGATROPOLIS will Burn……….
We have just launched a Kickstarter fundraiser and are in the planning stages of a fundraiser in San Francisco on 17th July at Cell Space…keep and eye out for this event.

RAYGUN GOTHIC ROCKETSHIP INSTALLATION AT PIER 14 IN SAN FRANCISCO
The Black Rock Arts Foundation is thrilled to announce our collaboration with artists Sean Orlando, Nathaniel Taylor, David Shulman, and their talented crew on the installation of their iconic, large-scale sculpture, The Raygun Gothic Rocketship at Pier 14 on San Francisco’s waterfront from August 2010 until September 2011.
The 40-foot-tall art piece, The Raygun Gothic Rocketship, offers a retro-futuristic, highly-stylized vision of space travel circa 1930’s-1940’s science fiction and is the latest in a series of temporary public art exhibitions sponsored by BRAF with the aim of enlivening and activating public spaces.
The installation first landed at Burning Man 2009, and has subsequently appeared at NASA Ames for Yuri’s Night, and at Maker Faire. The piece is comprised of a single rocketship, poised as if to board passengers for a typical run to a nearby stellar destination. When installed in San Francisco, the sculpture will be accompanied by a descriptive exhibit, a “rocket stop”, which tells the story of the rocketship, provides route, schedule and other information. The installation will be illuminated for nighttime viewing.
We need your support!!!
Although this ambitious project has won overwhelming city and public support and enthusiasm, we need your help to make it happen! Help BRAF and the RGR crew make science fiction an everyday reality to hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors to the San Francisco Embarcadero. Donate now, and receive a thank you gift!
