{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** Next week, the Burning Man staff will escape the concrete confines of our San Francisco office for a four-day intensive Staff Retreat. This is an annual tradition where we take the lessons learned from 2010 and all the feedback that you the participants have provided us, chew on our visions for where we think we’re headed as a culture, and stir it all up to co-create what’s next for the Burning Man Project. Not just for 2011, but beyond…and not just on playa, but every day, all around the world.

It’s an exciting opportunity to contemplate all the possibility that lies before us. Thank YOU for giving us your feeback to incorporate into this discussion… we do read ALL of it and take it with us into this process.

It’s always good to take some time (personally or professionally) now and again to be self-reflective, and lean into the opportunity to change course and evolve. Like all good rites of passage, right? And so here we go! Watch for a report-out from one or more of our staffers about the goings on at the retreat.

In other news, we’re happy to announce our new Academics at Burning Man webpage, which will be an ongoing repository for the papers, books and studies that’ve been written about Burning Man, as well as an open invitation for scholars to connect with each other and share information about their research. Learn all about it, and please do get involved!

http://burningman.com/whatisburningman/academics.html

We hope and trust your ongoing Decompression season has been going well … and that maybe you’ve finally gotten all that playa off your car. Well, we can hope, anyway.

BURNING ACADEMIA

Scholars and academics have long found Black Rock City ripe for research projects and scholarly analysis. Burning Man’s Communications Department has served as a liaison to these projects by providing access to the Burning Man archives, photo and video passes on the playa, staff and participant interviews, and other forms of support for research and educational efforts.

In 2010, the Jack Rabbit Speaks newsletter issued an invitation to scholars, educators, and academics to attend the first official “Burning Nerds” Meet and Greet, held on Friday, September 3rd at Hotel Ashram Galactica in Black Rock City. We expected a small gathering of 30 or 40 people — but over 200 academics attended; sociology, anthropology, performance, art, business, spirituality and religion, business, and dozens of other disciplines were represented at this lively meet and greet. Several researchers took the stage to provide insights into their current or planned projects about Burning Man and our related culture.

Are you an accademic interested in connecting with other Burning Man academics and scholars? Join the Burning Nerds Google Group to stay updated on recent, relevant, and ongoing research about our collective experience in Black Rock City, and find out about meet-ups, collaborations, and future events.

Learn more on our new Academics at Burning Man webpage: http://burningman.com/whatisburningman/academics.html

We’ve known about these researchers for years, and at last, now these brainy Burners finally are connected and know they’re not alone in geeking out on their favorite social movement!

The Chronicle of Higher Education also recently covered scholarship around Burning Man. You can find their article here:

The LA Times got in on this movement as well with “Burning Man becomes a hot academic topic”:

A THANK-YOU NOTE FROM A PARTICIPANT

Nice.

“Thank you Black Rock City.

I solo biked to Burning Man, 2010 from Canada and when I got to the gates Aug 30th I was the first in the gates 6:00 pm sharp. Feeling like a rock star, I biked in and found a place to call home. As a “Burgin” it was a once in a lifetime moment.

What an experience, everyone was so openarmed, that warm and fuzzy feeling goes on.

I couldn’t stay for the burn as the High Sierra’s called and floated off. Crossing Death Valley and down to the Grand Canyon.

A trip never forgotten.

Thanks.

Burner Brian from Canada.”

CAMP CONDUIT POSTS THEIR HAT PICTURES

Greetings from Camp Conduit!

• Did you receive a gift hat from us at Burning Man this year?
• Did we take a photo of you wearing it?
• Would you like to see the photo?

As promised, we have posted all the hat pictures to a Facebook page (along with all our other pictures–a rare few appropriately cropped/fuzzed where needed, so all pics should be “safe”). Public links are below, and folks can also friend “Camp Conduit.” Enjoy, and feel free to email us or post to our wall. Have a great year, everyone!

A CLASS ON FLAME EFFECTS FOR THE ARTIST – NOV 20/21 – SPARKS, NV

DaveX, our Fire Art Safety Team manager, writes to let us know about this great class:

“Attention all artists who wish to incorporate fire aspects into their art! This class is for you …

Sparks Nevada just outside Reno will be the site an exciting two-day seminar and workshop teaching basic practices and principles for incorporating fuel based flame effects into your work. This class is great for the beginning fire artist and always has something new for the “expert”.

Our hosts will be members of the Reno fire art community including: Dave King (Controlled Burn) http://controlledburnreno.com/ Steve Atkins (creator of the Spire of Fire) http://www.spireoffire.com One Eyed Dick (flame effects lead on Ein Hammer) http://www.mutantvehicle.com/Ein_Hammer.htm

Leading the workshops for this weekend will be Dave X, Fire Safety Manager for Burning Man for over 10 years, and Eric Smith, Chief Inspector for the State of Nevada Board for the Regulation of LP Gas.

The first day will consist of a classroom session where we will discuss NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) guidelines including NFPA 54 and 58 the LP gas codes as well as NFPA 160 Flame Effects Before a Live Audience and other codes. We will examine the physical properties of LP gasses and get some hands on time with fittings and parts. The day will finish off by taking a look at some typical designs for Flame Effects including accumulators, free burning effects, pilot lights, etc. We will have plenty of demonstrations and hands on materials as well as the legendary clear propane cylinder.

The second day will be a shop day where we will put what we have learned into action and create a one of a kind flame effect from the materials on hand. The best part of the class is the assembly of the effect so please let us know if you have materials or elements you may like to see incorporated. This class will be fun for the artist who is thinking of incorporating a small flame element into their work, as well as the more experienced fire artist wanting to take their work to the next level.

Check out some pics of past classes

The cost of this 2-Day class will be $120.

Both days’ classes will be from 10am – 5pm.

Printed materials and a crappy but filling lunch of burnt (Turkey…Gobble Gobble) hot dogs and whatever cheap sodas we can get will be provided.

Come and join us for this weekend to hang out with other fire artists and have a blast, no pun intended. We have room for 30 and will be taking walk up registration the day of the event, space permitting. Email your name to Fuelmaster (at) gmail (dot) com to reserve your place.”

OFF-PLAYA-O-GRAMS FROM THE BRCPO2.0

Those frisky kids from the BRC Post Office 2.0 write:

“The Black Rock City Post Office 2.0 proudly presents off-Playa-O-Grams. To help us bring an (even more) beautiful and awesomely interactive BRCPO 2.0 to Burning Man in 2011, we are having some between Burn fun. Check out our fall fund raiser at http://bit.ly/dqdFAl

There’s lot’s of very cool PO swag to be had but most important are the ultimate in Burner gifts: Off-Playa-O-Grams! (You know like a telegram only delivered by a Burner… so better than a telegram. Way, way better.) Send off-Playa-O-Grams to all of your friends, family and campmates this holiday season. Have even more fun and volunteer to deliver off-Playa-O-Grams in your area. E-Mail brcpo2oh (at) gmail (dot) com for details.

We look forward to spending our winter doing lot’s of stamping and mailing but, most of all, door-bell ringing to deliver off-Playa-O-Grams. When we arrive in the desert next year we will be all warmed up for more licking, sticking, bureaucracy and delivering e-mail and all other kinds of playa-o-grams. After all, the most important Rite of Passage at Burning Man is surviving the line at the Post Office. (You know like a Post Office only run by Burners… so better than a Post Office. Way, way better.) http://brcpo2oh.weebly.com

CHICAGO DECOMPRESSION 2010 – CHICAGO, IL – NOVEMBER 6

CHICAGO DECOMPRESSION 2010
Little Playa on the Prairie
Saturday, November 6th, 2010
2:00 P.M. – 3:00 A.M.
East Bank Storage – 5th Floor
1200 W. 35th Street @ Racine, Chicago, IL

Join your friends in Chicago’s Burning Man Community for Decompression 2010 This B.U.R.N. NFP-sponsored community event brings the open-hearted energy and creative spirit of the Burning Man Project to our great city for fourteen magical hours. (We get an extra hour when the clock “falls back” at 2am.)

On Saturday, November 6th you and hundreds of your closest friends will create your version of Black Rock City on the 5th floor of the East Bank Storage facility, a Bridgeport storage, studio, and event with 15,000+ square feet in which to play! This community-arts event will be – as always – for you, and by you, complete with music, art installations, food, friends, family and FUN!

This year’s theme is Little Playa on the Prairie. Think bonnets, top hats, pioneers and covered wagons. This is the Land of Lincoln y’all, the Prairie State, so we’re going back in time to the days of our homeboy Abe Lincoln, a time when Chicago was just an up-and-coming little burgh bridging the East Coast with the Western states.

Years ago, pioneers travelled in wagons west from the great plains. Now Chicagoans follow the same corridor – now Interstate 80 – to get to the Black Rock Desert. Pickups may have replaced ponies, but both groups travel and camp in risky conditions and wide open spaces, seeking opportunity and adventure.

We have a wide open space to make our own at Bridgeport Arts Center. Do you bring a little playa to the Prairie, taking all the art and finery and madness of Burning Man, or will you bring the Prairie spirit to our little playa – barn raisings and bonnets, farmers and cowboys. Or Can you do both?

For more pre-sale contributions, our Survival Guide, directions (It’s just a mile off the expressway) and more info, please visit www.boldurban.org/events

$15 suggested pre-sale contributions – http://boldurban.org/donate
$20 suggested contribution at the door, if you’re in pioneer or playa-gear
$25 suggested contribution at the door, if you’re in street clothes
Participants 12 and under will not be asked for a contribution.

This event will be conducted in accordance with the “Ten Principles” of the Burning Man Regional Network
http://regionals.burningman.com/network_principles.html Full financial reports will be available to this community after Decompression is over.
