**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

Hello everybody! Well, this weekend is the SF Precompression event, marking the official beginning of the beginning … time to stoke your fires! We’ve got details down below, along with plenty more, including the Desert Art Preview, featuring a stellar group of playa artists talking about their artworks … which, if all goes well, will be webcast live this year.

The form to submit your playa event to the What Where When and the Playa Info Directory are available as of today, so if you’ve got an event or activity up your sleeve for this year’s Burn, and you want folks to know about it (amidst the mad chaos), make sure you get it listed there.

And remember, the deadline for pre-registering your art installation and applying for a Mutant Vehicle license is June 30, so hop on it. Lastly … and this is important, people, so heads-up … we’re here to remind you once again that Burning Man tickets will NOT be sold at the Gate this year, so if you’re planning on buying tickets, get ’em now.

So what else we got in this JRS? Well, want to display your art at the Center Camp Cafe? We got info on making that happen. Want to sing in a choir? Got that too. Want to help give people playa names? That too. Want to see some cool stop-motion video from last year’s Burn? Yep. We’re all up in your bizness.

And now, to push your panic button: the Man burns in 78 days!

Yep, good times.

SUBMIT YOUR PLAYA EVENT FOR INCLUSION IN THE WHAT WHERE WHEN GUIDE & PLAYA INFO DIRECTORY

WHAT: Playa Info Directory & What Where When event listings
WHERE: www.burningman.com/participate/playadirectory.html WHEN: Opens June 16. Entries for the What Where When close July 1 or when we reach 960 events. Events can continue to be listed online up until the event.

Get your writer’s caps on, it’s time to whip up a snappy description of your on-playa event to appear in the online Playa Events Calendar and possibly in the printed What Where When guide. There’s a brief window of time to try and get your submission published in the print version, starting June 16 and ending by July 1 (though we may run out of space before then.) Events can continue to be entered for the online version up until the event.

When you are entering info about your event you will have the opportunity to submit the bite-sized 140 character description for print (please don’t get too crazy with abbreviations, they get really tough to read when there are nearly 1000 of them…), as well as a lengthier description that will appear online. If you’re with a registered Theme Camp don’t worry that you’re placement hasn’t been announced yet, we’ll take care of listing your address with your events.

To get started, visit:

NEVADA BRC STORAGE FOR PROJECTS UPDATE: 5 SPACES LEFT!

Last month we provided additional information about a new storage option for Black Rock City projects, intended to help our participants, artists and theme camps with storage near the event. As expected, the response rate has picked up now that we are only a few months away from the Burn!

Based on current signups and our available supply, we only have 5 additional containers available this year.

If you were planning on signing up, you will want to finalize your plans soon. Take a moment to review the FAQ and signup information for additional details.

To recap, we are offering participants the opportunity to purchase a 20 foot shipping container. Your container will be delivered to Black Rock City each year. We have had a great response. One camp has reserved two containers – yes, you can submit multiple applications if you need more than one. Also, any individual or group that attends Burning Man can take advantage of this service.

More information and the link to sign up is available at:
http://storage.burningman.com

The updated FAQ is at:

NEW NEVADA LEGISLATION FOR FIRE SPINNERS – THE REAL STORY

Y’know, we were wondering about this, as we were hearing all kindsa scuttlebutt on the wires, so our intrepid legal team (including Miss Lily, who’s not only an INCREDIBLE fire performer in her own right, she’s also in the midst of getting her law degree at UC Berkeley’s Boalt Law School, cuz she’s smart like that) checked it out for us and got the real scoop. So here ya go … Lily writes:

“Greetings Burning Man Community,

As many of you have heard, new legislation has been signed in Nevada requiring all fire spinners planning to perform in Nevada to register as a fire performer or an apprentice fire performer with the state of Nevada. We at Burning Man have heard a significant amount of feedback and concern regarding this statute, and would like to take a moment of your time to assuage any fears you may have, and encourage you to burn brightly and often out on playa.

The new statute, AB304, is actually just the codification of a rule that was already in existence in Nevada, requiring fire performers to be 18 or older, and to register with the state. A local Reno fire arts group known as Controlled Burn pushed to have this rule modified slightly and put into a formal statute, to allow fire performers under the age of 18 to perform legally in Nevada as a fire performing apprentice. So technically, the only thing that has changed as far as the fire performance “rules” in Nevada is that now, fire performers under the age of 18 can spin on stage by showing that they are being adequately supervised and educated on fire safety principles. Thank you Controlled Burn for your hard work efforts to spread the fiery love!

BUT WHAT ABOUT ME and all my friends who come out to Burning Man to spin fire every year?!! You may ask. Well, have no fear. First, as previously mentioned, this has already been the rule in Nevada and if it has not affected you in the past, it likely will not affect you now. In addition, and this is the important part for YOU, our beloved participants, to feel comfortable and free to express yourself in any (safe) fiery way you deem necessary: Section 4 of the statute defines “fire performer” as an entertainer or other performer who performs for an audience using an open flame in a venue authorized by permit of a governmental entity. While you may plan to perform in front of an audience using an open flame, the Burning Man event is not a venue authorized by permit of a governmental entity as a fire performance venue as defined by AB304 (though we do encourage it when done safely! Did I mention safety?).

SO, pack your goggles, and don’t forget to bring your poi, bring your staff, bring your swords, meteors, clubs, darts, whips, or any other fire tool you love best, and prepare to spin to your heart’s content or until the fuel runs out. We can’t say this enough so we will say it one more time, please do so safely, with a fire safety to spot you and proper fire safety equipment. But most of all have fun engaging in highly flammable radical self-expression!

With hearts of fire,
The Burning Man Legal Team”

THE TEMPLE DELIVERY PROJECT HAS RETURNED

Madgirl is doing it again … we love this project. She writes:

“This is for all you Burners out there that can’t make it home this year but might have something you want delivered to the Temple. I want to take care of it for you. Letters, photos, objects, messages to be written there, whatever! I will be traveling to the playa from Colorado…most likely the easiest way to get things to me will be by mail, but I am certainly willing to try and work something else out if need be.

If you have something you would like me to deliver (or know someone who might, Burners and non-Burners alike), shoot me a message at csuskiergirl (at) yahoo (dot) com.

Dusty hugs,
~Madgirl”

HELP THE PEARLINGTON LIBRARY

Back in 2005, Burners went down to Pearlington, MS to help its residents dig out from under the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. And with that effort, Burners Without Borders was born. We still hold close ties with the folks in Pearlington, and they’re often in our thoughts. Well, here’s an easy way we can help them … just vote for them in this Pepsi Refresh competition, so they can earn $10,000 to fund the children’s area of their public library. Take a moment to click! Mary Perkins writes:

“Help us raise money for the Pearlington Library. Just keep voting for us. Please click on the link below and vote for the Pearlington Library Pepsi Refresh project to raise $10,000 for the children’s area. We would greatly appreciate it.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: PUT YOUR ART IN THE CAFE AT BM2011!

Jonesy writes:

“Greetings Burning World!

How would you like to place your art in the biggest, most populated structure on the Playa? That’s right! You have the opportunity to show off your talent & ideas in Center Camp Cafe for Burning Man 2011!

Help us enhance this environment and engage your fellow Black Rock Citizens as they sit and mingle in this popular hot spot on the Playa. We are looking for art in all shapes and sizes! If you have a sculpture that would get lost in the great expanse of the open playa, but might be appreciated in a more intimate setting, please let us know! Or if you have a larger piece that would work perfectly in one of our “alcove” areas around the perimeter of the Cafe, we’d love to hear about it! The alcove is a perfect spot to showcase your own “Rite of Passage” altar! Create an environment that engages Cafe-goers and transports them into their history or future life changing event such as birth, puberty, first sexual encounter, leaving home, falling in love, giving birth, menopause/manopause, retirement, death, or your first year at Burning Man. If you would like to take over an alcove and express your own very personal experience, let us know now! Write to cafe-art (at) burningman (dot) com.

ALSO, now in its third year, the Cafe hosts a GIGANTIC two-dimensional wall art gallery to show paintings, photographs, and whatever you can hang on a board! If you are a painter or photographer and always felt lost in giant art world on the Playa, now is your opportunity to shine and be a part of our KIOSK project. The works must fit into a 48″ x 48″ space and extend no further than 8″ from the Kiosk surface. To see pictures of the Kiosk spaces, and other parts of the Cafe, see Flickr gallery here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/32065929@N05/4590473966/in/set-72157624020135956/

To be a part of this beautiful and exciting environment, please see more info at the Cafe Art website: http://tinyurl.com/4y3bd8a

Then you can submit an application by filling out our on-line form: http://tinyurl.com/3nug4lh

Once you’ve done that, someone will get back to you to talk about your project.
For questions, please e-mail cafe-art (at) burningman (dot) com

Thanks!

CALLING ALL SINGERS! CALLING A RHYTHM SECTION! THE PLAYA CHOIR NEEDS YOU!

Madi is BACK again this year with the Playa Choir! She writes:

“I’ll bet you might not have known there is a participant-driven choir out at burning man? Or maybe you heard about it and you were wondering how to be a part of it? Or maybe I’m writing this while you are wondering, ‘hmmmm, I want to try something a little different this year, I wonder what I could DO?’

This is Madi, I direct the Playa Choir. For the last six years, the playa choir has been ROCKING sunday mornings in Black Rock City with a choir now over 50 voices strong. I can’t really put words on the experience we have, but basically, as a choir director, this is the highlight of my year.

on wed, thurs, fri and saturday, we rehearse from 10:30 am-12:30 ish. We prepare about 4 tunes, usually in the gospel style or close to that, and we sing in harmony. Then on Sunday at 11 am, we give this gift of music to a gathering of folks who come to listen, and to hear a playa-style sunday morning service. We sing, dance, cry, laugh, shout, clap, rock, and make music together…we uplift (if that is possible to lift most of us ANY higher than we already are on sunday morning at the burn) the congregation and leave feeling as if we were part of something really wonderful, something that only singing together at BRC can make you feel. not sure what thats like? come join us and find out!

we welcome singers of all levels.
If you read, we want you! If you don’t, we want you!
If you have some choir experience, perfect. If not, that’s ok too.
If you sing in a country band or in a church choir, please share!
If you sing in the shower, you can come AND not wear any clothes! (leave the bar soap at home, but bring a scrubby buddy, people get a little funky come saturday..)
If you are a background singer or you sing to your child/dog/cat/husband/wife/muse/gerbils, we want you!
If you’ve always wanted to sing but never had the guts to go for it, NOW IS YOUR TIME TO SHOW UP AND MAKE IT HAPPEN….!
Hell, if you are a pro singer, opera singer, rock star, jazzer, pop queen, crooner, karaoke junkie, torch singer, folkie, hippie, choirster, a cappella fanatic, barbershopper, broadway belter, WHATEVER,…we WANT YOU!

Our placement details are forthcoming, but you can plan on the following:

wed, thurs, fri, sat rehearsal at 10:30 am
sunday morning service at 11 am.

WE NEED A RHYTHM SECTION, MEANING DRUMS, BASS, GUITAR AND ANOTHER KEYBOARD PLAYER TOO!!

please email me for more information and to let me know you are interested. I’ll send you music ahead of time (to learn either by ear or by notes on the page) and keep you up to date on details on our placement.

I can be reached at:
madis_service (at) yahoo (dot) com

here is some footage of our choir in years past!

CALLING ALL NAUGHTY SKOOLBOYS, SKOOLGIRLS AND DEGENERATE FACULTY

Annette writes:

“Camp Play(a)Skool is dedicated to exploring the intersection between the principles of Burning Man and the default world. We are seeking Teachers and Guides to contribute to our daily curriculum. Our classes range from yoga and meditation, to science and metaphysics, to the art of gifting and desert survival, to learning the cosmic formula for finding your soul mate on the Playa.

Classes will be participant-driven, including games, play, discussion, and debate. The Faculty are mere guides, seeding the discussion with their experience and technical knowledge, and encouraging the classes to focus on beyond Burning Man application of the topics.

All talents, experiences, the silly, the serious, the esoteric and the academic are welcome to experience, teach, guide and learn together. If you want to join our band of teachers, email playaskool (at) gmail (dot) com and tell us what you have to share.”

CONTRIBUTE TIME, TALENT, OR AUCTION ITEMS TO TEMPLE NYC FUNDRAISER

Gemini writes:

“The 2011 Burning Man festival Temple, the Temple of Transition, will stand 120′ high, 220′ wide, a symphony of soaring gothic arches, balinese pagodas, and intricate Maori & Celtic surface detail, all built by a volunteer crew of over 150 people. The spiritual & emotional heart of Burning Man, the participatory art festival in the Nevada desert, the Temple is an enormously complex project — encompassing a huge range of projects from CNC panels, chandeliers and stained glass through engineered steel, logistics, lighting, and the burn itself to consider and make happen — and requires the resources and support of the entire community to make it happen.

‘With so much of our metalwork coming from the hands of New York artists, we’d love to see if we can fund this vital element of the Temple from within the New York community, and to do so, we need to raise just over $15,000 for metalwork alone. Please help us create YOUR Temple at Burning Man 2011, and in doing so, know that you are delivering a beautiful, sacred, and vitally important gift to your Burner community. Many thanks, and much love,’ – the Temple Crew

To help cover some of that cost, we’re having a steampunk/dark cabaret/circus party, The Lost Circus, on Saturday, July 16, in a stunning 19th century church space. We have soaring ceilings for aerial, a stage + sound system for performances, and a balcony for art and interactive installations/experiences. Preceding the party will be a VIP donor reception featuring an auction of art/experiences/services donated from the BM community and specially curated performances. 100% of the VIP ticket sales and of the auction will go to the Temple, in addition to 50% of regular tix sales.

Burning Man is all about participation, and we are reaching out to tap into its communal spirit in hopes of raising as much as we can for one of its most ambitious and special art projects. Can you contribute any time, talent, or expertise? How about anything for the art auction? This is a huge production, and we need your help. Email us at gs (at) geminiandscorpio (dot) com with ‘Temple fundraiser’ in the subject.

Cheers,

Gemini & Scorpio”

MPYRE STRIKES BACK – MONTEREY, CA – JULY 9

That’s right, its that time of year again!!!

Our official Burning Man Beach Burn on Del Monte Beach (Windows on the Bay) in Monterey!!

Saturday, July 9th 10a-10p.

You know the drill! Bring your blankets, beach chairs, whimsy, fun, costumes, hoops, fire toys, joy and best burner smiles!!

We welcome theme camps, performance, art installations and full fire permits are in play for this event, so please bring your firetoys and enjoy spinning on the edge of the Pacific Ocean!

We will have amplified music from 10a-10p. If you are interested in performing, please see below.

This is the only official Burning Man event in the world that has no boundaries, gates, or required admission price. That is an incredible opportunity for sharing this beautiful energy with our immediate community. To make this happen, we need volunteers and willing hands to bring this to our beach!

To cover the costs of the permits and insurance, we ask that you donate $10 per person to the event either by paypalingmpyre.treasury (at) gmail (dot) com or donating during the event. Each person that makes a $10 donation will receive event-specific schwag (yeah, it will be a cool sticker) Again, there are no gates or boundaries, so there is no financial pressure if anyone is uncomfortable or unable to make the suggested donation. We provide this event as a gift to our community at large, from the Monterey Regional Burning Man group.

All ages are welcome, as well as dogs on leashes.

We are allowed to have open containers on the beach, however all state, local and federal rules apply.

If you are interested in volunteering, we have the following needs:

– Greeter Booth
– Greeter Lead
– Greeters
– Green Beans (recycle/garbage)
– Burn Barrels
– Firewood
– Burn Barrel Overseer
– Rangers

If you are interested in performing, volunteering, installing an art piece, theme camp or have any questions please email monterey (at) burningman (dot) com and let us know what we can do to help!

For more information and coordinating with other attendees, check out our event page on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=222749821086217
