{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}
**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** Art is everywhere at Burning Man … in every theme camp, every street, every nook and cranny of the expansive open playa — from Center Camp to the Man to the deepest point in the City’s perimeter — you’ll find art. In fact, everyBODY at Burning Man IS art, including YOU … that’s what makes our city special: everywhere you go, you’re neck-deep in of one of the most fantastic (and fantastical) art experiences ever conceived. And the best part? A lot of it involves FIRE.
Yep, in fact this year we expect to see more fire art than has EVER been seen in Black Rock City. There are 93 fire art installations, up from 71 in 2010. And on Thursday night of the event, we’re going to do something completely awesome (stupid?) … we’re going to burn 22 large-scale artworks that will be surrounding the Man — SIMULTANEOUSLY. These pieces comprise the Circle of Regional Effigies (CORE) Project, each of which were built by representatives of Burning Man’s Regional Network groups. This? Will be incredible. Make sure that’s on your calendar, marked Not To Be Missed.
There are some amazing pieces coming to the playa this year, and if you want to bring your own artwork, it’s not too late … learn more about how to go about it, below. EVERYBODY’S art is welcome at Burning Man … and that includes YOU.
The Man burns in 11 days! (WOW) We can’t wait to see you all on playa!

MOZE’S ART PICKS (AND MORE) FOR 2011
If you read just one thing about the art at this year’s Burn, make it this one … the inimitable John “Moze” Mosbaugh has once again graced us with his thoughts on this year’s art. As always, it’s an excellent read:
**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**
THE ARTERY
The ARTery is the on-playa headquarters for Burning Man’s art department. To learn about all that they do (and don’t do), see:

WANT TO BRING YOUR ART TO THE PLAYA THIS YEAR?
If you haven’t registered your art yet, and you want to bring it to the playa, you still can! Download and fill out the art registration PDF, and bring it with you to the Artery, found on the Esplanade & 6:30. Here’s the PDF:

ART TOURS
The ARTery offers a variety of art tours. Pick the one that’s right for you:
Guided Art Tours
For those in need (e.g. you can’t get around to the artwork yourself on foot or by bike), there are art tours that depart on a bus daily from “Everywhere”, right next to First Camp on the Esplanade. These limited seats are first come, first served, and first preference given to those in need. Tours are Tuesday – Friday at 11am. Tickets are handed out the day before the tour (Monday for Tuesday’s tour, Tuesday for Wednesday’s tour, etc.) at noon at District Everywhere. Check in at the ARTery for additional details and tour availability.
Self-Guided Paper Tours
The ARTery also provides written tours that you can pick up at the ARTery, and create your own tour! Lead a tour with your friends … take ’em around in a pack of bikes, or do a tour with your Mutant Vehicle.
Audio Art Tours
The ARTery ‘s Jim Tierney (aka Anarchist Cowboy) has once again produced an awesome audio art tour, featuring great behind-the-scenes information about many of the Honorarium art installations. You can find the MP3s here, which you can download to your computer, smartphone or iPod to bring with you:

BURNING TIME – THE ONE MILE CLOCK
Here’s a nice article in the Sacramento Bee about Jim Bower’s art piece for this year, “Burning Time” also known as the One Mile Clock, which is in the running for the Guinness Book of World Records title of world’s largest clock. If you want to know what time it is on playa this year, just look up.

BURNING MAN FASHION – THE OTHER ART
Everybody in Black Rock City IS art, in how they costume, adorn and comport themselves. The SF Bay Guardian wrote a nice little piece about Burning Man fashion, and we’ve found some others around the net … check ’em out.

TATTOO OASIS SEEKS BODY ARTISTS
Lala writes:
“Hello Fellow Theme Camps!
This is Lala from Tattoo Oasis (9:30 and Anniversary)!
We are a camp all about how tattoos mark rites of passage and giving burners a chance to engage in body art on the playa!
We are looking for artists that want to paint on people to come be at camp between the hours of 10-1 Tuesday- Friday. Get the word out and come play with us! We are providing the supplies (although we are accepting donations!!!).
Also, we are having a party on Wednesday at 430pm if you can make it… Sangria, body art, and phat beats! Come through!!!
Check out our website at www.tattoooasis.com
Thanks and love… Lala”

SATELLITE PHOTO – BE THE ART
Jeffrey Johnson writes:
“The Satellite Overflight of BRC will be at 11:49am on Thursday 9/1 this year. I believe they are tasking the GeoEye-1 satellite with 50cm resolution (as opposed to 1m resolution on the IKONOS satellite used last year).
Please announce far and wide and encourage people to lay out art to be photographed from space. I know the water trucks have some plans this year.
Cheers!
Jeff”

DON’T LOCK YOUR BIKE TO THE ART
This may sound stupid, but (well) every year people lock their bikes to art installations … as if they were giant bike racks. Which? They’re not. Sometimes this results in a) the lock having to be cut before the piece is burned, or b) the bike being burned with the piece. Neither is cool. Avoid it by … guess what? … not locking your bike to the artwork in the first place. Done and done.
**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**
RESPECT FOR THE ART: IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING, BUT….
We hope you’ll help us with this one. We have very few out and out RULES, really, in BRC, but there’s one very serious thing that really must be called a rule: Unless you made it, don’t vandalize artwork.
Yeah, we know “it’s Burning Man, man … don’t harsh my mellow … it’s my creative expression, man!” Yeah, no. Messing with somebody else’s art just isn’t cool … unless of course they expressly imply that their piece is meant to be messed with, written on, etc.
Having created art, this Rabbit is here to tell ya: it blows when somebody else vandalizes your work. So please, help keep an eye on the artwork and treat it with respect, and if you see someone tagging, vandalizing, manhandling or climbing something fragile or unsound, or heaven forbid, stealing a piece of art, do your part and talk to them, or contact a Ranger if you’re not equipped to deal with it yourself. There’s plenty of room on the playa for eveyrone’s art and expression without us having to do it all over each others’ work.

HELP BRING A BURNING MAN PROJECT TO LIFE
We’ve been adding more and more projects to our Support a Project page that are seeking assistance with their fundraising, in hopes of bringing their projects to Burning Man this year … there are over 60 at this point. Check them all out, help if you can:

AMAZING PANORAMIC PHOTOS OF BURNING MAN 2010 FROM BRAD TEMPLETON
We put this in the last JRS, and yep, we’re doing it again … because it’s just. that. cool. Brad writes:
“I have a new gallery of giant panoramas of Burning man 2010. The first interesting thing is that these are my largest yet, some running over a billion pixels. You’ll see shots of the whole city, of the Man and conclave before the burn, twilight, the temple and more.
What is also new is I am now displaying them with a flash “zoom” viewer that lets you zoom in on any point and pan around. It’s particularly amazing if you remember to click the ‘fullscreen’ button in the upper right corner and use your arrow keys and mouse scroll wheel.
All these can be found at:
http://pic.templetons.com/brad/pano/bman10.html
There’s also a link to the gallery of normal size photos of 2010.
In addition, I have converted many of the old favourite panoramas, going back to 1998 to the zoom viewer, so you can see these shots at full resolution for the first time off the playa. But they will be on the playa at the 9 o’clock plaza — see you there. There are two galleries with the best of 13 different years:
http://pic.templetons.com/brad/pano/bigburn.html
Has the big 360 degree view of every BRC 98-10, and
http://pic.templetons.com/brad/pano/bestburn.html
Has some of my favourite shots for all the years. And http://www.templetons.com/brad/burn/ has links to all the old stuff.”
