**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** As we enter October, the Decompression event season is about to go into full swing, and you don’t want to miss out, do you? Noooo you don’t. Hitting a Decompression is a great way to connect with friendly Burners in your local town, relive and revive the playa spirit, and have SOMEBODY understand what the hell you’re talking about. You know what we mean.

To help you out, our Special Events and Regionals teams have updated our official list of Regional Events … check it out, and get out there and enjoy yourself:

http://regionals.burningman.com/regionalevents_11.html

Wherever you are in the world, odds are there’s something happening within a good strong stone’s throw (including Burning Seed 2011, the second annual Australian Regional Burning Man event!) … and if not, find some like-minded folks near you and make it happen! Now there’s a thought. Not sure where your local Regional is, or what they’re about? Well, look ’em up in our directory and say hello … they’re mighty friendly:

http://regionals.burningman.com/regional_directory.html

Meanwhile, back on the Black Rock Desert … the Playa Restoration Team continues their hard work out on playa as we type, picking up all MOOP that was (inadvertently or otherwise) left behind. Burning Man simply couldn’t happen year after year without their efforts (the BLM wouldn’t let us). This year, the team is live-blogging their progress on the Burning Blog. It’s been fun to watch the MOOP Map get filled in every day … follow along:

http://blog.burningman.com/tag/moop-map-live-2011/

We’d love to hear about your experiences on the playa and at your favorite Decompression event … share with us and the rest of the Burning Man community on the Burning Blog (http://blog.burningman.com), our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/burningman) and the ePlaya (http://eplaya.burningman.com).

Onward!

ANNOUNCING: MOOP MAP LIVE 2011

For the first time ever the DPW Playa Restoration All-Star Team will be blogging the progress and results of the MOOP Map at the end of each day leading up to the annual BLM SIte Inspection. Now you at home can follow our Leave No Trace effort on the playa as we battle against Matter Out of Place by Linesweeping from 2 and Esplanade to 10 and Liminal, and prepare for the BLM Site Inspection of Black Rock City.

How was your camp’s Leave No Trace effort this year? Did you rally your campmates into doing a big epic Line Sweep? Or did your campmates bail on you, leaving you to pick up moop in the dark all alone while waiting for the Exodus line to die down? Will your your camp be found Red, Yellow, or Green on the 2011 Moop Map? Will Playa Restoration finish the job in time for Black Rock City to pass the BLM Site Inspection? Tune in to MOOP MAP LIVE 2011 on the Burning Blog at:

http://blog.burningman.com/tag/moop-map-live-2011/

Starts Monday 9/19 and ends Thursday 10/6 with the BLM Site Inspection.

To whet your whistle, here’s a great video:

BURNING MAN INCLUDED IN TIME’S 100 MOST IMPORTANT SITES IN CIVILIZATION

We’ve always known that Burning Man is rich with cultural import, and rife with possibility for creating positive cultural change in the world. And so it was gratifying to learn that TIME Magazine has included Burning Man in its “Great Places of History: Civilization’s 100 Most Important Sites: An Illustrated Journey”.

We are humbled to be mentioned in the same sentence, let alone to be included amongst such sites as The Great Pyramids, Easter Island, Mecca, Angkor Wat, The Great Wall of China and more. Pretty cool! Here’s a link to the book:

ARCHIVE EDITIONS OF THE BLACK ROCK BEACON

The publishers of the Black Rock Beacon write to let us know:

“Hey Jack Rabbiters, just wanted to let you know that PDFs of the Black Rock Beacon are available near the top of our homepage:

http://www.blackrockbeacon.org/

No Playa dust, but they’re otherwise the exact same thing you’d’ve received in BRC.

THE HUMAN MANDALA PROJECT FROM BURNING MAN 2011

We came across this on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/burningman) and thought it quite wonderful. Thought you’d enjoy it as well …

SEEKING STOLEN VIDEO CAMERA EQUIPMENT

While we don’t normally post lost and found notices, this is different. Perhaps you know something about this and can help Scott out? He writes:

“Sometime between sundown on the Sunday of the Temple burn and 10:30 the next morning, someone stole most of the equipment from my ‘Retrotelechronoscope’ installation at 9:30 & 1000′. The stolen equipment included three GoPro HD Hero video cameras (serial numbers for two are HD11210046307 and HD11210046317).

The cameras were in a distinctive hexagonal wooden housing about 12″ across by 8” high with three acrylic windows for the cameras and marked with a brass plaque bearing the name of the project. The housing was padlocked shut and was probably still attached to a 5-foot metal pole when it was stolen. The tripod, battery box, and solar panels were left behind.

The cameras were distinctive in that they had ‘skeleton’ housings with cut-outs for connectors and memory cards instead of the usual waterproof housings. They also each had a blue and black 32 GB IF3C brand SDHC card.

If anyone remembers seeing any suspicious activity in that area, or finds cameras matching the above description for sale, please contact me at scott (at) opentrac (dot) org. I’m offering a $500 reward for information that leads to a return of the equipment.

Thanks,

Scott Miller”

THE MODERN NOMAD’S GUIDE TO BURNING MAN

Gustav writes:

“I know that the first thing that happens when you return from Burning Man is that you are asked to explain what it is to those who have never been. To help in that, I wrote up a beginners guide to Burning Man in two parts. The first is what you might see and do at Burning Man, the second about the ten principles and how they shape the community. I hope that this can be useful for other burners as well as virgins thinking of going.

You would make me very happy if you helped me share this with my fellow burners via your JRS newsletter.

Kind Regards,
Gustav, the Modern Nomad”

LOST AND FOUND ITEMS WHILE FLYING TO/FROM RENO AIRPORT

If you believe you lost an item while flying into or out of the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, there are three different possible avenues toward recovery, depending on where the item was lost:

a) If you believe you lost the item in the Reno Airport (but not at a Security Checkpoint), contact the Airport’s Lost & Found Department at 775-328-6868, or send an email to lostandfound (at) renoairport (dot) com.

b) If you had an item confiscated at a Security Checkpoint, contact the TSA at 775-334-7611.

c) Or if you believe you lost an item on the airplane you were traveling on, contact the airline itself.

BURNERS PORTRAIT BOOK SEEKS BURNING MAN ESSAYS

Nicholas writes:

“I am working on a book of portraits of burners made at center camp over the last 3 burns . I have divided the images into 7 categories: Creativity, Play, Community, Spirituality, Adventure, Sensuality, and Discovery.

I would like to invite burners to submit 300 to 500 word essays on any of the topics above for possible inclusion (with proper attribution of course) in the book. Profits from the sale of the book will be donated to the construction of the Temple.

Please submit the essays to wolfeye (at) me (dot) com. My goal is to complete the book in early January and have it published by mid year, 2012.

To see samples of the portraits, go to my facebook page, Burners Portrait Book: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Burners-Portrait-Book/194300042480?ref=nf

Thanks, and be well.”

2011 SUPPORT A PROJECT RECAP

2011 was the second year we’ve listed people’s Kickstarter fundraising efforts on our website, and — not surprisingly — the funds raised this year far surpassed what we saw in 2010. While so many Burners participate with their sweat equity, some wish to participate by making financial contributions to projects instead (often both!).

This year, projects garnered a whopping total of $469,107 in donations, up from $109,176 in 2010. We see this as the Burning Man community stepping up for radical collaboration, helping others in their efforts to contribute to our larger culture.

We’d like to thank everybody who dug deep to help these projects happen, and we fully realize that this reflects only a small portion of the donations made through other ways and means — financial and otherwise. So on behalf of the artists and the people of Black Rock City, thank you!

BURNING SEED: SYNERGY – NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA – NOV 9-14

Burning Man Australia presents

BURNING SEED 2011 – SYNERGY
9-14th November 2011

Burning Seed 2011 is the second annual Australian Regional Burning Man event, happening from 9-14 November 2011. After an amazing first burn in Bellingen last year, we are moving to a larger and more out-of-the-way location in a clearing of the Matong State Forest in southern New South Wales, a spot pretty much equidistant between Melbourne and Sydney.

The theme for this year’s Burning Seed is Synergy, allowing us to explore the notion that, together, we can combine our talents and energies to build something that goes beyond the capabilities of each participant independently. Our theme is about intention and uniting our community in a higher shared ideal; it is intended to inspire and challenge our imagination and creativity.
