{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** We’re happy (and quite proud, frankly) to report that the BLM came and inspected our swath of the Black Rock Desert a couple weeks ago, and we passed the inspection with flying colors! Even with an increase in population (53,963 at the peak), we did an even BETTER job of Leaving No Trace than ever. Well done everybody! Check out The Hun’s detailed coverage of it in the Burning Blog: http://bit.ly/rdBmKG

So we’re knee-deep in Decompression season now, and they’re going off all over the world. London, Montreal, Italy, Vancouver, SF, LA, Seattle, Portland, Atlanta, Arizona, Wisconsin, Maryland, San Diego, Chicago … they all happened, and reports are they were fantastic. If you want to get yours on, Boston, Australia and Ireland are comin’ up! Just sayin’. For a full list, and to find the one near you, visit:

http://regionals.burningman.com/regionalevents_11.html

And now that the Burn is in our rearview, a lot of folks are jumping on the social network to connect with other Burners and share their stories, pictures and videos. Check out the ePlaya (http://eplaya.burningman.com), our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/burningman), and Twitter our feeds (www.twitter.com/burningman and www.twitter.com/blackrockcity) if you want to join the conversation.

The Man burns in 313 days!

DID YOU LOSE YOUR CAMERA ON PLAYA? FIND IT HERE

Check out these photos from cameras that were turned into Playa Info, and see if you recognize your (or your friends’) shots:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/burning_man_lost_and_found/

If you discover your images in the lost and found set:

To get your camera back, please send an email to us at lostandfound@burningman.com, and put the camera/Flickr Set number in the subject line.

Please provide us with a description of your camera: make, model, color, or if it was in a case or a bag.

Also, describe any unique photos that aren’t published on Flickr, and if possible, send us a photo of yourself or someone who would appear in your photos.

Lastly, include your mailing address. If we have your camera we will send it to you; we just ask that after you receive your package you reimburse us the cost of postage.

Act now! All Lost and Found efforts to reunite you with your lost items must end when ticket sales begin in mid-January for the 2012 Burn! After that the cameras and phones will be donated and all image files deleted.

… and remember to put your name on your camera next year!

Thanks, and good luck!
Lost and Found

[Editor’s Note: if you’d like to meet the folks who handle Lost and Found for Burning Man, check out this post on the Burning Blog: http://bit.ly/qUOoZZ]

BURNING MAN 2011-2012 WALL CALENDAR

In case you missed it during all your pre-playa prep in August, the 2011-2012 Burning Man Calendar is available in our Marketplace: http://bit.ly/qjrylw

This edition features 102 images from the 25 years of Burning Man history as captured by 44 different photographers. The design lets you hang the calendar on the wall or use it as a week planner. You choose! Either way, we are sure it is a gift you will keep and share with others for many years to come.

BLACK ROCK ARTS FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES A NEW GRANT APPLICATION PROCESS

Attention artists! In an effort to streamline our grant application process, the Black Rock Arts Foundation has initiated a new step to our application instructions. To apply for a grant from BRAF, you will now need to submit a Letter of Inquiry (LOI) before submitting a full proposal. If the grant committee feels your project is a potential fit for our grants, you will be invited to submit a full proposal.

This cuts down on the work involved for both you, the grant applicant, and for our grant review committee. You’ll have the chance to give a succinct, one-page overview of your project, and to tell us why you think it’s a good fit for BRAF’s grants program.

Usually, at this time of year, we begin accepting online grant applications. Instead, we’ll accept online LOI’s at this time. Online LOI’s are due December 1, 2012.

To see if your project qualifies for a BRAF grant, and to read our full grant timeline and application instructions, visit:

www.blackrockarts.org/grants/grant-criteria

Please contact Josie at BRAF with questions, at josie (at) blackrockarts (dot) org.

We can’t wait to hear about your project!

GET YOUR COPY OF THE PEOPLE OF BURNING MAN BOOK

Surreal images of participants by Julian Cash who did his “light painting” at Decompression in San Francisco this year http://ThePeopleOfBurningMan.com/decompression.html

We know Julian Cash from Supersnail Camp, where he spent roughly a decade shooting white background portraits of Burners. Recently his wonderful book “The People of Burning Man” was crowdfunded by (who else?) the actual people of Burning Man. To see the fantastic video, go to: http://ThePeopleOfBurningMan.com

Julian says: I had a blast at Decompression, giving away art and making new friends. People were complaining because we weren’t selling the book there, so, your new coupon code for 20% off is: JRS20. We want to spread Burner culture to the world, so we offer free books to libraries, museums, and other culture-spreading institutions. After all, if we only show our kindness and creativity to our own community, then what effect do we have in the larger world we live in? Here’s how you can help:

* Get a Book into Every Country (Yes, even the repressive ones)
* Loan your Copy to Your Friends (Did you fill up your Borrower’s Card?)
* Put the Book in Libraries (We’re happy to donate)
* Get a Media copy (Work for a media outlet? Let us know)
* Trade Schwag for a Book (You get a book. We distribute theme camp schwag)
* Review the book on Amazon (Higher ranking = more people see it)

For more info on each of these, look at:
http://ThePeopleOfBurningMan.com/propagate.html

AMAZING BURNING MAN 2011 TIME LAPSE VIDEO

A number of people have sent us this amazing time lapse video of the entirety of Burning Man 2011 (and by “entirety” we mean from pre-fence to the last day of playa restoration, and everything in between). It’s simply incredible to see the event unfold this way … not to mention the burns look like big explosions.

Congratulations and thanks to these intrepid filmmakers!

Those lucky enough to attend San Francisco’s Decompression got a chance to attend the premiere of Jason Mongue’s short homage to Burning Man 2011. DONATE YOUR ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT TO PLAYA INFO

Brillig and the folks at Playa Info could use your used electronic equipment … check it out:

“Playa Info serves thousands of participants every year with our computer system in Center Camp. It’s where you can input or find events listings, art, camp locations, rideshares, plus sending and receiving messages.

As remarkable as it seems, not all of our computer gear lasts a week of 100° heat, dust storms, spilled coffee, and keyboard pounding. If you have a recent, working, Windows or Mac computer–including laptops and imacs–with a minimum of 512 MB RAM, or an LCD monitor, or a USB keyboard that you no longer need, we’re here for you. Please contact brillig@burningman.com.”

SEEKING PHOTOS, VIDEOS AND STORIES OF THE TROJAN HORSE

Eric writes:

“We are documenting the Trojan Horse Project, and would love for you to share your photos and videos with us, especially the pulling and burning of the horse. Ideally, we are looking for dramatic day and night stills we can use for a photo book and high resolution, high-quality footage (although we accept video content of any type) that our film director, Todd Darling, can include in the documentary he has begun work on.

You can share your art with us in several ways:
Photo: Upload your photos in their highest resolution onto Flickr and add them to our Trojan Horse 2011 Group Pool. Or send us links to your online photo albums located on Flickr, Picasa, etc.
Video: Upload your videos in their highest resolution to Vimeo, and choose the option “Allow other people to download the source video” in the privacy settings. (You can also password protect the video and give only us access.)
Photo/Video: Make a zip-file of your photos/videos and send it to info (at) trojanhorse2011 (dot) com with one of these file-sharing services:
http://www.megaupload.com – no need to register, maximum file size of 1024MB
https://www.dropbox.com – put the file into your public folder and send us the link
http://www.yousendit.com – maximum file size of 50MB with free account
Larger Files: If you have larger file sizes to share, please send an email to info (at) trojanhorse2011 (dot) com and we’ll get back to you with login-data for a yousendit pro-account that will enable you to upload files up-to 2GB.
Tape: If you shot tape, we’ll clone your tape or will happily accept a dub. Please send a message to info (at) trojanhorse2011 (dot) com and mailing instructions will be sent to you. We’ll also reimburse any mailing costs.

+ Credits: Please let us know how you’d like to be named in the photo/video credits.

You can find this call and all sharing-details on our website.

We’d also like to read your impressions and stories about the horse! Please submit them to info (at) trojanhorse2011 (dot) com and let us share them with a wider audience.”

SEEKING PHOTO AND/OR VIDEO OF “NELUMBO NUCIFERA” ART INSTALLATION

Michael Emery writes:

“I was an honorarium recipient this year. I installed my sculpture, Nelumbo Nucifera, at 6:05 and 1100 ft. If you walked the promanade from center camp to the man, this installation was a little over halfway on the left, just past the Iron Monkeys project and just before the Desperados ‘Another Door’ project. Unfortunately, I was not able to get much documentation of this piece.

I’m sending out a request to any burners who would be willing to share any photos and/or especially video footage. The piece was a 70′ lotus flower opening up out of the playa mud. The center was a turning mirrored structure surrounded by 6 wooden lotus petal shaped seats, which were surrounded by 6 larger petals made from steel tubing and rigged with fabric for nightime projection. These ‘screen petals’ were surrounded by 6 more steel petals, then by 6 projection boxes.

Please send photos (hi res if possible) to miko111 (at) comcast (dot) net

If you have video footage please contact me at miko111 (at) comcast (dot) net and we can discuss ways to get your footage sent to me.

Thank You
Michael Emery”
