{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}
**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** Here’s hoping you survived the holidays in fine style this year, and came out relatively unscathed! Happy (other) new year!
The big news of course is that the registration period for the Burning Man tickets Main Sale starts this coming Monday! Registration is open for two weeks until January 22nd. All you have to do is go to http://tickets.burningman.com at your leisure during that two week period and register.
During this phase, 40,000 ticket purchases will be awarded by a random selection process, which will run when registration closes. We’ve got full details below, and on the Tickets page — make sure you (and your Burner friends) read up on the details so you know what to expect!
And as you register, we appreciate your filling out a short survey we’ve included in the process; the information collected will contribute to greater understanding of our community and how to accommodate the widest range of needs during ticket sales– both this year, and in the future. So thanks!
The Main Sale will be followed up by the Open Sale in March. No registration is required during that phase – we’ll offer the remaining 10,000 tickets (and any that are unclaimed during the Main Sale) on a first-come, first-served basis (limit 4 per person) — while supplies last. Remember, no tickets will be sold at the gates or at outlets this year, and physical tickets won’t be mailed out until early summer. Deep breaths, we’re almost there!
In other news, the Burning Man Art Grant application process is now open too — if you’ve ever dreamed of a grant to build your artistic vision on the playa, your time has come to take the plunge! We’ve got info on how to apply, below. Plus a flame effects class in Hawaii (goosebumps! How cool!), several creative projects seeking contributors, and a high energy 6 minute video to stoke your winter flames.
The Man burns in 237 days.
P.S. Yes…we know only too well that you want the theme text for Burning Man 2012. Your friendly Jack Rabbits are on pins and needles too! On the way soon.

BURNING MAN TICKET MAIN SALE: REGISTRATION PERIOD STARTS MONDAY
The registration period for the Burning Man ticket Main Sale starts Monday January 9th (at 12 noon PST) and is open through January 22nd (at 11:59pm PST).
Here’s how it works:
Participants will register for the Main Sale during a two-week period from January 9 (at 12 noon PST) until January 22 (at 11:59pm PST), 2012 on http://tickets.burningman.com.
Entrants must provide a valid credit or debit card number at the time of registration.
On or before February 1, a random selection will be conducted to award 40,000 tickets in the following tiers:
$240: 10,000 tickets
$320: 15,000 tickets
$390: 15,000 tickets
You may select one, two, or all three tiers based on the price you are willing to purchase.
If you are awarded tickets, your credit card will be charged for the total amount of your tickets at that time (see ticket page for accurate processing/handling and shipping costs).
All sales at all Tiers for the Main Sale are limit 2 per person.
Those who are awarded tickets will receive an email notification on February 1 that their credit cards have been charged for the tickets. If there are entrants who are not awarded tickets they will also receive email notification.
Any remaining tickets not claimed in the Main Sale will be moved into the allotment for the Secondary Open Sale in March – no registration, first-come first-served, while supplies last.

APPLY FOR A BURNING MAN ART GRANT
If you’re interested in applying for a grant to create artwork for exhibition at Burning Man 2012, the Art Grant Application PDF is live, and posted. Find it here:
http://www.burningman.com/installations/submit_grant.html
We also did a bit of a tweak to the Art Grant FAQs, to answer even more questions:
http://www.burningman.com/installations/art_grants.html
Something new for the program this year — we are going to select the Cafe Portal art piece during Art Grant reviews. Here is some info on the Cafe Portal:
The Front Portal is the entrance Art for the Center Camp Café, a welcoming installation located in the middle of Black Rock City. The Front Portal does not have to be an actual arch or portal, though many have been created. It is the art installed near the ‘front entrance’ to the Center Camp Café structure as the Cafe faces The Man. In some years, this has resembled a type of ‘arch’ or portal. Here are some specific guidelines for the structure — it’s possible that a successful piece may fall slightly outside these guidelines, but there should be a strong reason why:
Height: 12 ft minimum. 30 ft maximum
Width: 12 ft min, 30 ft max
Depth: 8 ft min x 20 max
Inside of arch 8’ wide and 8’ high at minimum.
Keep in mind that this needs to be visible both day and night.
As with all honorarium pieces, the Cafe Portal installation needs to be fully set up by noon the Sunday before the event.
Read up, settle in and tell us about your vision for playa art in 2012!

HAVE YOU VOLUNTEERED FOR BURNING MAN? PLEASE FILL OUT THIS SURVEY
Termeh passes this on …
“Dear Burning Man Crew,
What an amazing year we have had. So many positive changes and the largest event with the best weather ever. How can we do it better? Please let us know!
Last year the Volunteer Squadron created a survey specifically for volunteers. It provided great information that helped improve processes, shape better communication, appreciation, training materials, and in some cases let us know what we are doing right! One of the things that made it particularly helpful was that a very large percentage of people filled it out. We are hoping for the same response rate or better for this year.
Please fill out the new survey…you have a couple of weeks to make it happen! This survey closes on January 15th. Pick a time when you can reflect and really tell us how you feel. Your input will be anonymous and will be distributed to any department that it will affect. Here’s the survey:
http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22DWUAZ9DBL
Also, feel free to forward to anyone you know who has volunteered for Burning Man.
Thank you!
Harley and the Volunteer Squadron”

TUNA GUY JIM PETERSON PASSES AWAY
We’re sad to report the news that long-time Burner Captain Jim Peterson, one of the main organizers of “The Tuna Guys” camp that blessed Burners with gifts of fresh tuna on playa, passed away when his fishing boat capsized off the coast of Oregon. The Tuna Guys are an iconic playa legend, part of the fabric of Black Rock City, and an enduring icon of Gifting at its best. Our thoughts are with Captain Jim’s family and friends.
Here’s a news article about the tragedy from local news site KMTR.com: http://bit.ly/zzeCau

FUNDRAISING FOR ART PROJECTS WORKSHOP
On December 13, 2011, the Burning Man Special Events Team hosted a free workshop about fundraising for art projects. We’re happy to say that it was well-attended, both in house at Burning Man HQ and online via live webcast.
We recorded the audio from the workshop and uploaded the accompanying PowerPoint presentation so those of you who couldn’t attend can still benefit from the information presented. Here you go:

DISTRIKT ART GRANT
Piper writes:
“Did you know we are currently accepting grant proposals for our very first DISTRIKT art grant? Due to the busy holiday season, we have extended the due date of the initial letters of inquiry by one week to January 8th, 2012.
We will provide up to $5000 for one or more art installations to be showcased at DISTRIKT during Burning Man 2012. The art should blend and interact with DISTRIKT (i.e.- extremely fragile nighttime-oriented installations won’t make sense at a crowded and energetic camp operating during the day.) Other than that, the sky’s the limit!
As with grants from BRAF or Burning Man itself, this is not a commission — the art is yours to keep. We simply provide funding and a venue within which to showcase your creation. Though we’d love to have you, camping with or becoming a member of DISTRIKT isn’t a requirement.
If you’re interested and feel your installation would be a good fit at DISTRIKT, please follow the following instructions. Timeline/Process:
• Email Letter of Inquiry (LOI) to grants (at) distriktcamp (dot) org no later than January 8th, 2012.
• The LOI should include the following information
• Name of artist or collective
• Name phone number, email address, and mailing address of contact person
• Name of project or program
• Amount requested up to $5000
• Brief description of project, and how it fits the ethos of DISTRIKT (400 words or less)
• Attachment or link to images or conceptual drawings
• Invitations for proposals, along with further instructions, will be extended no later than January 15th, 2012.
• Proposals are accepted by invitation only, and are due February 17th, 2012
• Selected grantees are notified March 1st, 2012
• Initial funding released to new grantees by March 15th, 2012
As with any new process, no doubt there will be questions, please feel free to email us atgrants (at) distriktcamp (dot) org and we will do our best to respond quickly.
We’re thrilled to take this step forward, to evolve, and mature & to give back at a new level.

HELP SUPPORT WICHI/H20 – A BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS PROJECT
Leigh writes:
“My project Wichi/H20 which is part of Cloudhead Art Organization received funding from Burners Without Borders this last July.
We take donated digital cameras and put them in the hands of indigenous Wichi children in a small village in NW Argentina. Then we sell the best of the photos they take, and all profits go to develop a community garden and bring clean water to the children and their families. We just launched an Artslant sales site for our photos: http://bit.ly/zJ8rKK
Here’s the link to a description of Wichi/H20: http://cloudhead.org/projects/wichih20/
Anyone who wants updates of what’s going on with this project and others can find us on Facebook at http://facebook.com/cloudheadART or Twitter: http://twitter.com/CloudheadART, and our website: http://cloudhead.org.

SUPPORT A FULL-LENGTH DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE OTIC OASIS PROJECT
Melissa (aka “Syn”) writes:
“Daniela Ardizzone, a filmmaker based in LA, documented the build at Burning Man, and her goal is to complete a full length documentary on the Otic Oasis. She just launched a fundraising page at IndieGoGo, to help her complete the film. There you will see a 4 minute teaser that captures the spirit of the Otic Oasis as well as all community based, volunteer dependent, inclusive and interactive art that you are all an integral part of creating. It’s worth a visit to her IndieGoGo page just to view the trailer:
http://igg.me/p/53930?a=255975
And obviously, donations to her efforts will help make this film a reality.
Thanks again for your interest and participation in the Otic Oasis project.”

FLAME EFFECTS FOR THE ARTIST – NORTH SHORE OAHU, HI – FEB 11 & 12
Hawaii is ablaze …
The Flame Effects for Artist class will be coming to the island of Oahu, Hawaii February 11th and 12th with a great workshop for those who wish to incorporate fire aspects into their art!
Ka Pilina Interactive Arts Society will present this great 2-day workshop in flame effects with the artist in mind.
The workshop will be for those from the mainland to come to and enjoy the islands as well as for those who are already working and based in the Pacific Rim area. Artists will be able to share there love of the fire arts in this bountiful tropical setting while taking in detailed useful information and ideas
The workshop will be teaching basic practices and principles for incorporating fuel based flame effects into your artistic projects and artwork. This class is great for the beginning fire artist and always has something new for the “expert”. Each one of these classes has drawn participants who have had all levels of experience. This has made for some great questions and projects that have been both fun and challenging.
The first day will consist of a classroom session where we will discuss subjects including:
NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) guidelines including NFPA 54 and 58 the LP gas codes.
NFPA 160 Flame Effects Before a Live Audience and other codes.
We will also examine the physical properties of LP gasses and get some hands on time with fittings and parts. Of course, we closely examine the wonders of LP gas with the amazing clear propane cylinder. We will then finish off by taking a look at some typical designs for Flame Effects including accumulators, free burning effects, fuel mortars, pilot lights, hot surface igniters and much more. We will have plenty of demonstrations and hands on materials including the ever-popular clear propane tank.
After the first days class the great folks from the Ka Pilina Interactive Arts Society will host us for a great beachside BB-Q, moonlight fire and meet and greet. Fire artists telling tales of fires past around a campfire on a beach in Hawaii? Wow that sounds awesome!
The second day will be a shop day where we will put what we have learned into action and create a one of a kind flame effect from the materials on hand. The best part of the class is the assembly of the effect so please let us know if you have materials or elements you may like to see incorporated. This class will be fun for the artist who is thinking of incorporating a small flame element into their work, as well as the more experienced fire artist wanting to take their work to the next level.
Leading this weekend will be Dave X, Fire Safety Manager for Burning Man for more than 10 years, and Eric Smith, Chief Inspector for the State of Nevada Board for the Regulation of LP Gas. We will also have displays of fire art from several local fire artists!

The cost of this 2-Day class will be $150.
Both days’ classes will be from 10am – 5pm.
Printed materials and a yummy lunch of whatever cheap local food we can get will be provided each day.
Come and join us in the islands for this weekend and hang out with other fire artists in this place born of fire …
