{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}
**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** Next weekend, we will be hosting the annual Regional Leadership Summit here in San Francisco, which is a chance for Burning Man’s representatives from around the world to gather, share ideas and inspiration, and plot the course for how to best support this culture all over the world. This year more than ever, the story of Burning Man is really becoming about the cultural community that creates Black Rock City, not just Black Rock City itself…local Burners getting organized and activated across the globe has never been more important than it is in 2012. We’re gearing up for what will doubtless be the most interesting Burning Man moment we’ve seen. Now is a moment of birth.
So, to say we’re excited to have them descend upon BMHQ and to continue their annual discussion in this moment would be an understatement. We’re honored to help support this network. This year’s Summit will be the continuation of a long ongoing conversation, and you can be — maybe you already are — a contributor!
If you’re not yet plugged in to your local regional group, this is your first Burn, or you’re just hoping to figure out where else Burning Man lives in the world — find out at http://regionals.burningman.com. We’ll have a wrap-up report after the Summit to give you a sense of the event, and we’re sure to post about it on the blog so you can add your thoughts to the comments. Or ask your local leadership whether they’re taking part!
In the meantime, we come at you with another installment of the Jack Rabbit Speaks, and we do hope it finds you well as we move into Spring.
The Man burns in 165 days!

It’s simple. Gather your community, find out what you care about, and let your imaginations run wild. The deadline for submissions is April 6, 2012. You can learn about the details and fill out a simple application here:

BLACK ROCK ARTS FOUNDATION 2012 GRANTEES ANNOUNCED
The Black Rock Arts Foundation, Burning Man’s sister non-profit dedicated to funding and facilitating art year-round. (New here? BRAF does *not* fund the art of Black Rock City – BRAF places art all over the world beyond Burning Man! www.blackrockarts.org) writes to let us know they’ve announced their grantees for 2012. Congratulations everybody, and thank you for making art happen globally! The BRAF team writes:
“We’ve done it again! We’ve awarded even more funding to even more artists this year, and we’re thrilled at the creativity and diversity of these new projects.
The Grants To Artists Program is the heart and soul of BRAF. Our grantees bring deeply interactive, community-building art-experiences into the everyday lives of people around the world.
When you donate to BRAF, you’re funding emerging artists like these – artists whose work defies conventional arts genres, eludes the criteria of more traditional grant makers and desperately needs our support. Thank you for making these projects a reality!

THE 2011 (UN)OFFICIAL BLACK ROCK YEARBOOK IS OUT!
Dougj11 writes:
“The future is uncertain, but the past is well documented. Here is your chance to relive the memories, possibly for the first time.
www.blackrockyearbook.com
Every year on the playa (and at LA Decom) we set up a yearbook booth and take photos of who or whatever shows up. I think you’ll be surprised about how unsurprised you are that people are so creative. This yearbook goes WAY beyond dorky hair.
enjoy!

ARTIST KATE RAUDENBUSH WORKING ON A PROJECT IN SEOUL, KOREA
This great news comes to us by way of the Black Rock Arts Foundation, Burning Man’s sister non-profit dedicated to funding interactive artwork off playa year-round. Kate Raudenbush is a long-time Burning Man artist, whose amazing work you can see here:
http://galleries.burningman.com/browse?text=kate+raudenbush
“One of our favorite artists, Kate Raudenbush, is on her way to Seoul, Korea, where she’ll spend 40 days in residency creating a commissioned piece for the International Sculpture Festsa (ISF) (sculpturefesta.com/en). “Astral Matrix,” a sculptural space for mediation, first debuts at ISF April 7 – 13th at the Hangaram Art Museum in the Seoul Arts Center (www.sac.or.kr/eng)
The sculpture will then be permanently displayed in the International Sculpture Park at the Haitai Art Valley in Songchu.
Details about the sculpture will be found on Kate’s website at www.kateraudenbush.com
Can’t make it to Seoul to see Kate’s new work? Don’t forget that BRAF is busy raising funds to install one of her celebrated works, “Future’s Past”, in Hayes Valley (SF) this spring. Read more at www.blackrockarts.org/projects/futures-past

LITTLE FREE LIBRARIES
This nifty project — while completely unrelated to Burning Man — came across our radar via NPR (National Public Radio) and we couldn’t help but notice it rhymes pretty nicely with Burner values. Gifting, self-expression, civic responsibility, communal effort … it’s all there. So we thought we’d share it with you, and maybe somebody will get inspired to create one of these free libraries in your town. If you DO, please let us know with an email … we’d love to hear about it!
http://www.littlefreelibrary.org/
Kudos to the folks who came up with this brilliant idea.

THEME CAMP FORUM – SAN FRANCISCO, CA + WORLDWIDE WEBCAST – MARCH 24
To accommodate east coast and international time zones, we are hosting a repeat of our Forum for 2012 registering Theme Camps at Burning Man HQ in San Francisco, and webcast world-wide on Saturday, March 24th from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM Pacific Time.
This will be mostly the same content as our previous forum in February, with a slight increase in focus on the rise in “Plug and Play” camping and the impact of these camps with ample resources – the challenges and the successes of accommodating this growing strata of our community.
Once again we will present the following topics covered back on February 15th to assist your success as a theme camp producer. (If you attended in February, please refrain from RSVPing for March 24th to allow for a new, previously unserved audience).
o Tips for successful filing of the Placement questionnaire
o How to get through Gate with ease: early arrivals, carpools, deliveries, & “outside services”
o Ensuring a safe space for your visitors
o Heavy construction equipment: self-sufficiency, sharing with other camps
o BLM Special Use Permits for outside services
o Meeting Health Department compliance
o How to successfully de-MOOP and leave no trace: @ BRC and in surrounding communities
We hope you can join us in person at BMHQ in San Francisco (limited seating), or via webcast and phone.
RSVP:
Please indicate your camp name and your “IN-PERSON” or “WEB” RSVP in the subject line of your email RSVP to: rachel (at) burningman (dot) com. We will provide directions for in-person attendance and web login information to the list of RSVPs received.

EARTH GUARDIANS LNT TRAIN THE TRAINER CAMPING EVENT – DAVENPORT, CA – APRIL 28-29
On April 28-29 Earth Guardians will host our annual Leave No Trace (LNT) camping trip. If you are interested in learning more about why Burning Man is the largest LNT event in the world and how you can help contribute by teaching LNT, this is the trip for you. We will also discuss ways to green Burning Man with past participants who come each year to reconnect and reinvigorate.
If you come, you will become a certified LNT trainer, meet other active Burners, visit the beautiful California coastline and have FUN at the same time. There is no charge for this training – it is sponsored by Burning Man.
The trip involves traveling just north of Santa Cruz and “camping” at a private home in the country. We will conduct the class out doors. Each of you will be teaching a principle of LNT with an emphasis on how it pertains to Burning Man and the desert environment.
Please sign up for the course only when you are sure you will attend. This will help us coordinate the assignments given to the participants for the seven principles of LNT.
On completion of this class you will receive a certificate as a LNT trainer from the National LNT organization. Your mission, upon completion, will be to teach your fellow residents of Black Rock City how to Leave No Trace and Green Their Burn as well as spreading LNT ethics throughout your community and beyond.
Registration will close on April 6th. If you are interested, send an email to: lnt (at) burningman (dot) com
