{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** It’s been super busy here at HQ this month and it’s been a few weeks since your last JRS, readers, but we’re back! We’d like to start off with a big thanks to all the Burning Man community leaders who participated in the recent 6th annual Regional Leadership Summit at the beginning of April… their passion, intelligence and dedication to the support and strength of the Burning Man community is inspiring and most appreciated.

A lot’s been happening since we last talked, or is about to: announcements of the Honorarium Art Projects for 2012 (spoiler alert: they’re awesome); a whole host of local Newbie Orientation Sessions to help YOU the first-time Burner to get ready for this one-of-a-kind (and how!) experience; Burners Without Borders has announced its wholly inspiring list of 2012 Grant recipients…plus, as you read this, a contingent from HQ is in Washington DC telling our country’s leaders about the “cradle of American innovation and creativity” that is Burning Man. See below for the full story — Civic Involvement in action!

We’ve got the latest on tickets, of course…plus an encouragement to join the Burning Man Rideshare Board if you need a ride to the event, or can offer a ride in your vehicle. PLEASE consider carpool options this year — it’s a solid way to reduce the event’s environmental impact AND lessen the crush of ingress into and egress from Black Rock City. We’ll be gently recommending rideshares all season, so we hope it’s on your radar!

We’ve also got videos, ways to participate on the playa, and local events popping up all over…check it out! The Man burns in 122 days.

BURNING MAN 2012 HONORARIUM ART PROJECTS ANNOUNCED

This year, a record 349 applicants submitted grant proposals seeking almost $5 million in total funding. The grant committee did the difficult work to winnow down this list to 47 projects, awarding more than $700,000 – the most ever and a $100,000 increase over last year. This year’s list of artists includes many returning artists, as well as some new blood. We’re also very excited to announce that David Best — Burning Man’s original Temple builder — will return after a three-year hiatus to build the Temple of Juno this year.

TICKET UPDATES GALORE

LOW INCOME:

The Low Income Ticket Program opened to receive applications February 29, 2012 at 12 noon (PST). Several weeks ago, we reached the capacity of the number of applications we can review and consider and closed the application. Sorry, but we can accept no more applications. We’re about 2/3 of the way through reviewing (yes, we do read them all by hand). Our goal is to notify applicants within six (6) weeks of the date they applied (though the initial volume of submissions was very high and notification took a bit longer for the first wave).

And applications submitted before the application closed will receive a response one way or the other. We do remind you to check your spam filter, especially AOL users — we have heard from some folks who say our notification went wayward in their inbox…but if you haven’t heard anything, don’t fret just yet — you’ll get a note either way.

As a reminder, after all applications are reviewed, and the STEP system and directed tickets distribution are no longer in circulation, we will be performing a review of all 2012 sales to assure that Low Income Tickets aren’t going to people who’ve gotten tickets by other means. If a participant obtains any ticket at another level, we must cancel that participant’s Low Income Ticket.

CAN I STILL GET A TICKET?

All regular ticket sales for Burning Man 2012 have ended; no more tickets will be offered on public sale. We encourage you to reach out to your immediate community of friends, camp mates, and local Burners to watch for secondhand tickets being offered — it definitely does happen, and that activity will tend to increase as the event gets closer and plans settle out. We also recommend you watch the ticket forums on our community bulletin board, the ePlaya. All the info on how to use the boards to sell or seek tickets can be found here: http://bit.ly/eplayatkts2012 We don’t recommend the use of eBay or StubHub for buying secondhand tickets.

For those who signed up for the STEP system (Secure Ticket Exchange Program) and wonder about its status — yes, we are pleased to report that STEP is alive and well! It has averaged roughly a hundred or so sales a week so far, and while that’s just a trickle, it’s a steady trickle — a tributary of 2012 tickets regularly getting into the hands of eager Burners-to-be. About 1000 tickets have passed through STEP….so don’t lose faith just yet if you’re waiting in the queue. There are tickets changing hands and we expect that to continue as the season unfolds.

Whichever way you decide to source your ticket, we hope that you won’t buy or sell more than face value (plus fees), and you will…

BEWARE OF TICKET SCAMS!

It’s that season again, and the scammers are looking to take advantage of Burners who are eagerly searching for tickets.

We’ve had reports this year of people getting scammed via wire fraud. We strongly suggest you NEVER wire money for tickets, but rather use a form of payment that gives you recourse to recover your money in case it turns out to be a scam. Additionally, anyone claiming to have physical tickets in hand to sell you right now is lying, so beware. We won’t be mailing _anyone’s_ physical tickets out intil mid-June. If you have been scammed, you need to contact your local authorities’ fraud department and file a report.

BURNING MAN VISITS CAPITOL HILL – BMHQ IN WASHINGTON, DC

You may have seen some reports that Burning Man leadership is storming Capitol Hill, and it’s true! Larry Harvey, Marian Goodell and Ray Allen have been there this week visiting Congressional and BLM offices on what has become for us a regular journey to our nation’s capital, with repeat visits stretching back over a decade.

Burning Man is there this time sharing the story of the innovation and creativity in our culture and how we manifest it back in our home towns. POLITICO wrote up this week’s visit: http://politi.co/IjIVHg .

REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE OF NAMES – 2011-2012 BURNERS LOST

Since 1996, an anonymous Burner has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away the previous year. This tradition continues to honor those people who have affected our Burning experiences and who participated in creating Burning Man. This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any Burners lost in the last year whose names you feel should be added to this year’s Remembrance Plaque.

Please send only their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to this address:

remembrance (at) burningman (dot) com

(**please DO NOT HIT REPLY to this newsletter to submit a name.**)

Submissions must be received by July 20th to be included on this year’s plaque. Submissions after the 20th will be added to next year’s plaque.

Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man. (Important note: the plaque is displayed at the Manbase, not the Temple, where more elaborate and personal memorials are created by participants).

May their spirits move on to the eternal playa!

CAMP WARP ZONE SHARES THEIR CLIMBING STRUCTURE DESIGN SECRETS

Igor writes:

“Camp Warp Zone did a writeup about how we made our awesome climbing structure, Pipe Dream, in 2011. The writeup is here:

http://www.moomers.org/~jered/pipe-dream/

We also have a moderately awesome time-lapse move of our structure going up, here:

Going to Burning Man may look like fun and games, but sometimes you have to do a lot of math first. This was our schematic for our build:

Read it and rejoice!”

THE OUTPATIENT MONK – ST BENEDICT GOES TO BURNING MAN
by Doug Harrison at the Outpatient Monk

http://www.outpatientmonk.com/?p=591

“What do Benedictines have to do with Burning Man?. Well, not much. It is a Ven diagram with very little overlap (I think I’ll wear my leopard skin habit with the blinky hood? #notsomuch). But there is a reason I live happily wedged between these two very self-conscious groups of trouble makers.”

ONE OF YOUR JACK RABBITS IS HOPPING ON DOWN THE ROAD

With heavy heart we announce that Andie Grace, aka Actiongrl Burning Man’s long-time Communications Manager (and longtime Jack Rabbit, first as a writer and now as editor), will be leaving the Burning Man organization after 13 incredible years of service to this community. She’s feeling the pull of new horizons, and she will be VERY VERY missed – she has helped to forge the way for the ongoing evolution of Burning Man as we know it. For more information (including a note from AG), see: http://bit.ly/IhjAy9

(On a personal note, this Rabbit is sad to be losing the best boss and best editor he’s ever had. Andie’s keen and delicate editorial touch consistently improves the writing you see in the JRS, and that’s a rare opportunity for any writer to experience. Hat tip to you, Ms. Grace … all our best!)

DEATH GUILD / THUNDERDOME 2011 SHENANIGANS

We’re sad to report that long-time Death Guilder Donovan passed away last week after a tragic accident. He will be sorely missed in the Burning Man community. In his honor, we present this video from Death Guild 2011 (do NOT try this stuff at home, but if you do, don’t come cryin’ to us). RIP Donovan, our thoughts go out to your many friends and family.

“I put together this video of Death Guild/Thunderdome’s shenanigans in 2011. Clips of camp craziness, the DPW parade, Fight nights, Kidsville Fights, Billion Bunny March fight, Charon the Boatman Zoetrope and The Man and Temple burn. Share away!

ARTISTS! BLACK ROCK SOLAR REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS

Black Rock Solar seeks an artist to design, construct and install a unique commemorative sundial that will become the centerpiece for a sun-shaped solar array. The array, located on Yerington Paiute Tribal lands and shaped like a geometric sun, represents a collaboration between Black Rock Solar and the Tribe, and provides power to the tribal health clinic. The sundial will be permanently installed in the center of the array and will be dedicated on June 20, the summer solstice. See our website for a full announcement:

BURNING MAN ULTRAMARATHON

CherryBomb writes (and she’s not kidding):

“So you made it! You got tickets to the playa…now what can you do that’s different this year? Run the Burning Man Ultramarathon, of course.

A marathon is too traditional, so this 50k (31 mile) loop course will provide runners with constant entertainment, fun, heckling, free shots and drinks and snacks (provided by the playa and other runners!), and unlimited suffering – but get the ultimate HIGH, runners’ high!

Dress in a tutu, dress in your 70s running gear, or wear nothing at all. Just come out and run the funnest ultramarathon there is.

We invite all runners and non-runners to attempt to run this absolutely fabulous ultra. (And newbies, if you’re Burner Virgins, why not break your ultra cherry at the same time?)

If interested, please contact CherryBomb at cherylish (at) yahoo (dot) com. Runners are asked to provide name, gender, age on race day, contact info, and emergency contact info both off and on the playa. Volunteers wanted too!

See you out there, covered in sweat!

THE PLAYA CHOIR SEEKS SINGERS!

Madi writes:

“Hello playa family…Madi, the playa choir director here.

The choir is 7 years old this year! We are absolutely blessed with an incredible rehearsal and performance space. (PKILLY!) We have been gifted legitimate choir RISERS…And the music I’m lining up for this year is sure to dig down deep to the roots and set some souls on fire. The choir meets and rehearses on wed, thurs, fri and sat morning from 10:30-12:30ish during the event. On Sunday morning, we serve up a playa-style, non-dogmatic, highly energizing, musically centered and Spirit-rousing service. But none of this can happen without voices…without a choir…without YOU.

So, if this is your first year, if this is your 18th year, we want you. we welcome you. we already love you. and we want you to come share your voice, and your being with the choir and with the audience (which is beyond standing room only) on sunday morning at the event.

Simply drop me an email and I’ll add you to the email list. I’ll be sending out music in the next month or so….! for you solo singers, as always, there will be solo opportunities…

In the meantime, for those of you who need a visual…here is some footage of our choir from last year courtesy of our very own Random Man…enjoy!

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION — MOOP HACKS

Rebecca Ween shares:

“I’m putting together an interactive presentation to increase our communities awareness! Most importantly, the benefits of staying organized and reducing one’s impact on the environment. This is a great way for veteran’s to share their knowledge with new Burners and work together to create a more efficient environment for us all to enjoy.

Save time, save space, create less waste!!!

The project is called ‘moop!hacks’ to emphasis the clever natures of these little ‘cheats’ — How do you best reduce moop, either off the grid or before leaving home? How do you stay organized while living off-grid? What one item is essential to you being matter out of place?

All time saving/moop reducing tips are welcome! The presentation will take place early afternoon Thursday and Friday at our regional Burn and hopefully again many times on Playa.

Help out by sharing your responses to four (4) simple questions here: http://bit.ly/I46THv

HELP BRING THE BOTTLECAP GAZEBO TO THE PLAYA!

Ever wonder what happens to a bottlecap after you open a beer? Some of them turn into amazing art. A bunch of crazy kids in the Bay Area are building a two-story, fire-spewing gazebo, resembling a massive flower, with leaves and petals made of 100,000 bottlecaps! We have been collecting from friends, bars, restaurants and breweries, and have received caps from all over the world .

Our project is incredibly labor intensive, and we need more excited volunteers to help us smash every bottlecap flat, punch it with holes and wire them together into beautiful flower petals. Soon we’ll begin construction of the steel petal frame and the actual wood gazebo. So whether you are an experienced welder, carpenter, electrician, jeweler, pyromaniac, or have never built anything in your life, we have a job for you! We have weekly work nights in SF and Oakland, please drop us a line if you want to participate.

Like most art on the playa, the Bottlecap Gazebo is not funded by a Burning Man art grant and is counting on the support of our amazing community. We hope you’ll financially support us through our kickstarter campaign. Time is ticking and we’re counting on YOU. We have partnered with the non profit Flux Foundation (the amazing artists who built the 2010 Temple of Flux), who are supporting us with fiscal sponsorship, so all donations are tax deductible.

Here’s what we need you to do:

NEWBIE ORIENTATIONS AROUND THE COUNTRY

There are a whole host of Burning Man orientation sessions for first timers happening across the country. We’ve started to compile them in this blog post, and we’ll be adding more as they become known to us:

http://bit.ly/ID28VZ

We’ll also be keeping you apprised of upcoming ones through the JRS so you should stay tuned if you don’t see one in your area yet. There are ones coming up SOON in Seattle (see below) and Portland (see the blog).

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

RADICAL ORIENTATION – THE FIRST ANNUAL NEWBIE POTLUCK – SEATTLE, WA – MAY 6

We love to see the community picking up the ball they see lying on the ground, with veterans helping first-time Burners learn the ropes before hitting the playa. Christian writes:

“So you managed to be one of the lucky ones who got their Burning Man ticket in the lottery this year.

And it is your first time, too!

What an opportunity! What are you going to do? How can you participate? Who are the people in your community, what events are going on, what theme camps are in your area? In short, where can you find your neighbors that are Burners?

Well, if you are in the Seattle area, come to “Radical Orientation – The First Annual Newbie Potluck”!

When: May 6 Where: 1015 NE 72nd St, Seattle, WA 98115

Organized by several dusty, jaded, and completely enchanted Burning Man veterans, Radical Orientation is where you can talk to local theme camp representatives, learn how to reduce your garbage BEFORE you leave for the desert, take part in a Hexayurt building workshop, see a display of epic gifts and swag from the last decade, get connected electronically with your community, see presentations on fabulous art both old and new, connect with the Seattle CORE project (SeaCORE), and feel the embracing arms of the Pacific Northwest Burning Man Community wrapped around you!

This is a potluck, so please bring something seriously nummy. The groovy kids from Cocoa Dome Camp will be set up and dishing out the warm deliciousness, and we all know good Burners bring their own cup!

The date, time, and address are all in the Facebook event, because we REALLY need you RSVP if you plan on attending! We have a lot of room, but really need to know approximately how many people are interested! (And, if you aren’t in the PNW and want to throw an event like this for your own community, please contact us via the FB page, and we will send you PDF’s for how to do this yourself!)

ARTPAD SF, A BENEFIT FOR THE BLACK ROCK ARTS FOUNDATION – SF, CA – MAY 18

Join the Black Rock Arts Foundation at San Francisco’s most innovative venue for art: ArtPadSF

May 18th 6pm – 1am Phoenix Hotel 601 Eddy St.San Francisco, CA

If you were able to attend our special event at ArtPad SF last year, you know how unique and fun this event is. Join us for a festive gathering of BRAF’s community of supporters, Burning Man’s art lovers, and the Bay Area’s leading art galleries and art scene.

ArtPadSF invites San Francisco’s world-renowned museums, galleries, arts institutions, and artists to transform the Phoenix Hotel into an alternative venue for art. The hotel is reinvented as a vibrant and visionary community of prominent international and local artists.

The art fair culminates in a lively evening of performance art, fashion, dance, music and art experiences on Friday night. This unique event celebrates the wealth of local talent in the Bay Area, and raises funds to benefit the Black Rock Arts Foundation’s public art and grant programs.

For detailed information about the event and tickets, visit: http://bit.ly/Iz5wnS

Black Rock Arts is a 501(c)3 non-profit. A portion of your ticket price is tax-deductible.

CALLING ALL TECHNO-GEEKS: PLAYA WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY SUMMIT – MAY 22

Are you an artist, camp and/or geek who will bring wireless/internet technology to the playa?

If you are planning a large-scale technological project, have an art project that absolutely requires Internet connectivity, or will be beaming any sort of frequencies from 900MHz to 5.8GHz into the airwaves above the playa, you are cordially invited and strongly requested to participate in the fifth Playa Wireless Summit hosted by the Burning Man Technology Department.

This year’s summit will be held in San Francisco at the Internet Archive (but of course you can participate remotely — we’re geeks) at 7-9 pm on May 22, 2012. If you’re not in the area, and would still like to participate please send an email to us for info on how to dial in.

PLEASE RSVP and get more info by emailing playatech (at) burningman (dot) com

It also would be great if you could give us a few details on your project in your email. We will add you to an email list that’s only for the summit, and we will reply with more up-to-date information on the meeting with the address, etc.

Thank you from the Burning Man Playa Tech Team.
