{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** We’ve been getting asked a LOT about when physical tickets get mailed out. If you requested that your tickets be sent to you, they’re going in the mail soon, and you’ll receive them by the end of this month (along with your Survival Guide – READ IT!), so hang tight! If you asked for them to be held at Will Call, they’ll be at Will Call at the Burning Man Gate. Crazy, we know. If you have ANY questions about tickets (changing your address? Transferring names? etc.), before you send an email to your friendly neighborhood Jack Rabbit (ahem), please know your answer will most likely be found on the tickets page (and the FAQ attached to it), so please start there: http://tickets.burningman.com.

We’re excited to announce that the Environmental Assessment (EA) of Burning Man’s current and projected impact on the Black Rock Desert and its environs has been completed — and we need the help of the entire community to make sure we can continue to enjoy our home on the Black Rock Desert … see below for the details and how you can help.

The BLM issued a one-year permit for Burning Man to take place on the Black Rock Desert this year (see: http://bit.ly/KCJ2Nf), and we worked with them to increase our maximum population to 60,900. As we’ve sold close to 58,000 tickets to date, that leaves us with a little breathing room. We’re expecting some additional tickets to become available and will have more information next week. Stay tuned!

If you’d like to register your art installation, the deadline is next Wednesday, June 20 at noon PST. However, it’s not too late if you don’t make the deadline … you can register your art on playa at the ARTery in Center Camp, no problem. Start here: http://www.burningman.com/installations/

This JRS is (as predicted last time) a veritable BOUNTY of opportunities to participate in all manner of shenanigans, shamanisms, shebangs, and singing. We’ll be bringing more to you in the coming months.

The Man burns in 78 days!

ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT FOR BURNING MAN COMPLETED – WE NEED YOUR HELP

We’re excited to announce the completion of the Environmental Assessment (EA) of Burning Man’s current and projected impact on the Black Rock Desert and its environs (we are required by law to perform this EA, a process which is overseen by the BLM).

The EA analyzed five areas of impact of the Burning Man event: Carbon Footprint, Economic Impact, Traffic, Light Pollution/Night Skies, and Sound Pollution. What they found was that Burning Man was already doing great work in these areas, but there is always room for improvement. Therefore, Chapter 6 of the EA spells out additional mitigations we must adopt in order to grow the event successfully and sustainably.

What we need is for everybody in our community to be aware of, understand, and adopt these mitigations, and to help spread the word so that we can continue building Black Rock City on the Black Rock Desert and safely growing our population. They include the following:

PREVENTING OIL DRIPS: BLM will conduct Oil Drip Surveys to determine if hydrocarbons from cars are increasing on the playa. (There’s a simple way we can all prevent hydrocarbon drips: Put a drip pan or piece of cardboard under your vehicle! And secure it from the wind!)
PORTA-POTTY AWARENESS: BRC will create a webpage so that participants are aware of how dangerous it is to improperly dispose of human waste. (Want to know how you can prevent human health disasters? Empty RV Waste only at the RV DUMP!)
INBOUND/EXODUS TRAFFIC SOLUTIONS: BRC will continue to work with NDOT and the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe to create speed limits, signs, and flagging stations at key locations along the 447 and 34 routes, including Gerlach and Empire. (How can you help the traffic flow? Carpool! Plan for delays! Keep calm and drive safely! Prevent accidents!)
BRC will continue to clean up trash along the roads after the event and will provide increased education on the numerous locations where participants can properly dispose of waste. (How can you lessen the trash impact on our neighbors? Tie down your load! Dump your waste responsibly and only in designated locations!)

While these mitigations may sound simple, being “mostly there” isn’t good enough. Even small acts of noncompliance – one sneaky RV dumping on the roadside here, one stray bag of trash tossed in a ditch there – can negatively impact the future of the entire event. We can only do this together!

SUBMIT YOUR PLAYA EVENT FOR INCLUSION IN THE WHAT WHERE WHEN GUIDE & PLAYA INFO DIRECTORY

Hey now, it’s time to whip up a snappy description of your on-playa event to appear in the online Playa Events Calendar and possibly in the printed What Where When guide. There’s a brief window of time to try and get your submission published in the print version, starting June 15 and ending by July 1 (though we may run out of space before then). Events can continue to be entered for the online version up until the event.

When you are entering info about your event you will have the opportunity to submit the bite-sized 140 character description for print (please don’t get too crazy with abbreviations, they get really tough to read when there are nearly 1000 of them…), as well as a lengthier description that will appear online. If you’re with a registered Theme Camp don’t worry that you’re placement hasn’t been announced yet, we’ll take care of listing your address with your events.

FREE ANDROID APP COUNTS DOWN TO THE BURN

Nifty stuff for you Android users. Kristy writes:

“Just wanted to let you know that I’ve created a free Android app that counts down to the time that the man burns. You might want to mention this in an edition of the JRS.

PHOTOS FROM BURNING MAN FIRST-TIMER DUSTIN KERSCHTIEN

Dustin writes:

“Hey there!
Last year was my first burn and it really blew my mind! The best experience of my life! It allowed me a renewed faith in mankind. Thanks for that. I took lots of photos and am really good at making edits with them, I have over 400 edited pictures from 2011. I made a couple up for Champagne Lounge to print as stickers for 2012, as seen above and would gladly make more for any art installments, mutant vehicles or theme camps. Just let me know what you want to see on it… ie. Champagne Lounge wanted: the Man, Champagne, their name and 2012 on theirs.
My pictures are my gift to the Playa…
See my top 100 pic edits here:

Please share this if possible, Thanks!!
Attached a few examples of my pics too.

CENTER CAMP CAFE SEEKS WALL MURALISTS

Center Camp Cafe is looking for muralists and artists to contribute to the Fence Gallery! Yup, once again the Cafe has over 200′ of plywood fencing to beautify PRIOR to the event. Muralists are needed to paint their wonderful art a few days before gates open. Cafe is also looking for artists who want to exhibit existing work on the fence.

Interested? Good!

Contact the Fence Gallery Coordinator “E.” at esugar2601 (at) yahoo (dot) com. Please include examples of your work to get things going.

Remember: Center Camp Cafe starts caffeinating the BRC community on the first day of the event (Monday, August 31). The Fence Gallery artwork associated with the Cafe MUST be completed/installed by Monday morning 8/31.

SINGULARITY TRANSMISSIONS PROJECT SEEKS PEOPLE WITH VOICES

Do you have vocal cords? Cool. Amberry writes:

“Singularity Transmissions is an honorarium project this year (yay!). It is a 40′ sculptural interactive tower designed to simultaneously converge the voices of up to 15 individuals into one unified transmission through the use of tin-can phones. The phones are in 10′ pods surrounding the main tower, in which people can sing, talk, laugh, pray, scream, or even plug in an instrument, lap top, or ipod. All 15 channels come together inside the main tower, in real time, creating a moment of playa singularity. All the collected audio will be available online in an open source data base. Used as-is or remixed as desired; our hope is for artists, musicians, film makers, and performers to create new work with this material. We would like to reach out to singers, poets, musicians, djs, spoken word artists, yodelers, vocal meditators, anyone/groups who would like to create a transmission for this audio time capsule. More info at http://www.singularitytransmissions.com

Thank you!!!”

MARTIAL ARTISTS, ACROBATS AND MONKS! THE BLACK ROCK KWOON AND DOJO WANTS YOU!

Kick some ass! (We kid.) Kannik writes:

“Our red shrine returns for its third year. Within the temple we are students of motion. Martial arts, qi gong, meditation, and other pursuits are welcome here. Beneath the shade we don our saffron robes and practice the form and fluidity of mind and body. Master and novice alike find ways to hone their skills and cultivate their self. We are serenity. We are intensity. And when our minds are clear and we are as one with the Zen of the universe itself… the sacred gong rings out and we spring into motion, delivering fresh baked goods to various points around the city!

Do you have a passion for martial arts and acrobatics? Do you seek a shrine in which to practice your meditation? We are looking for people interested in teaching martial classes, leading meditation sessions, and tearing across the desert at a dead run, orange robes flowing, a battle flag strapped to their back, and a basket full of baked goods, or beer, or wine, or coffee to be delivered from one of our sibling camps to a designated location.

Visit our Facebook page to teach or deliver or learn or all three…

http://www.facebook.com/blackrockkwoon

Or email me for more info…

kannikcat (at) gmail (dot) com

And when you are on the playa, stop by our temple to train and learn!”

“GLOBAL SOUL” WANTS YOU!!!

Janis writes:

“The GLOBAL SOUL Project, in conjunction with Sacred Spaces Village, is seeking musicians and performers for our nightly, groovalicious throw-down! If you are a musician, performer, band, artist or ‘cultural aficionado’ that specializes in globally-inspired roots music, please write and tell us about yourself and/or your group! Links to your ‘music, movement or magic’ would be greatly appreciated, as well as your scheduling needs/preferences. GLOBAL SOUL hits the main stage at SSV from 7-9 p.m., Tuesday-Friday, starting with a community music-making event and then progressing to live performances. Come create a higher vibe of soul with us—it won’t be the same without you! (Also, if you are a musician seeking a band or vice-versa, please let us know and we can help point you in the right direction!) Please write to janis.e.kelly@gmail.com.”

THE BURNING MAN 2012 THEME CAMP FORECLOSURE PROJECT

Yes, we can enjoy a laugh at our own expense … the folks over at the Dumpster Dive Bar (stay classy) write:

“Did your camp get foreclosed upon? Did you not have enough street cred? Not enough time spent as a theme camp? Did you leave a bunch of moop or a couch at your site (If so, shame on you; you shouldn’t get placed)?

Whatever the reason, if the bank (Burning Man) does not place you this year and you have been placed in years past, we, the 99% at the dumpster dive bar would like to support you. The Burning Man 2012 Theme Camp Foreclosure Project anticipates several theme camps will not get placed this year, possibly even ours. In response we will be paying homage at your previous home by placing “foreclosure” signs in front of your previous home for the duration of the burn. At a minimum, send us: 1.) the name of your camp, 2.) your previous address please be specific, 3.) your tenure, ie. what years you dwelled at the address, and 4.) any other pertinent information that we may or may not use. Please wait until after placement decisions are made in July. We will remind everyone in the JRS after those decisions are made.

CALLING ALL OENOPHILES!

Hey, winers (har), Wineaux and DanO write:

“The Black Rock Wine Cellar is once again opening its subterranean wine storage facility for public use. If you have a precious bottle or two you would like to store in our refrigerated facility, swing on by and speak to our Sommelier. In addition to storage, we look forward to hosting the occasional tasting, in which we share some of our special selections. Check out our chalk board at The Cellar for tasting dates and times. SUPPORT A PROJECT

The list of projects seeking your help with funding is growing steadily, and we’ve captured them on our Support a Project page. Helping these folks out is a great way to participate if you’re not able to create something yourself (or even if you are), since it takes money to make these things happen, by and large (some larger than others).

www.burningman.com/participate/supportaproject

We would also like to encourage people who are creating Kickstarters to think carefully as you create your premiums — as this practice has evolved, we’ve watched our community respond very negatively when projects use premiums that exploit the Burning Man experience when coming up with donation rewards. And we agree – there’s a fine line between a reward for donation and selling a “premium experience” or commodifying what really shouldn’t be for sale in BRC. More on that can be found here: http://www.burningman.com/participate/supportaproject/raisefunds.html

We also feature a selection of high-impact projects to highlight for you here … see below.

BATHROOM BEACONS PROJECT

This is just too brilliant, valuable and hysterical to NOT share with you.

“We have just launched a Kickstarter Campaign for the Bathroom Beacons project, five unique art installations that will be going up around the inner-playa to make it easier for the denizens of BRC to find the portapotties at night. This will be a valuable service to everyone in the city, and we would love your support in our quest for a pee-free playa! Please consider giving us a mention the the ‘Support a Project’ section of your next newsletter. If nothing else, our video is pretty amusing, and I think a lot of people will get a kick out of it.

HELP LUMINOUS PASSAGE 2.0 GET TO THE PLAYA

Mark writes:

“You know how much fun it is to dress up your bike with El wire or yourself or your camp. Well we are trying to dress up the playa with El wire with our art project, Luminous Passage 2.0. We are building a 200’ x 50’ light sculpture completely out of El wire.

LP 2.0, an honorarium art project for 2012, will create a bridge between BRC and the Man. You will be able to pass through it as you leave the confines of town and head out into the open playa. As you pass through you can touch it and move it, as it is a soft sculpture and with a little investigation you might even be able to discover what makes it blink, because El wire just wouldn’t be El wire if it didn’t blink.

CITY 2.0 DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE 10 PRINCIPLES

Filmmaker Gemma Cocker writes:

“Our film team is in year two of creating a documentary called “City 2.0” which addresses the 10 Principles of Burning Man and their application in the real world in a succinct and creative way. The film will take Burning Man’s Ten Principles and investigate how those Principles marry together with tangible examples in the real world.

We’d then want to take the documentary a step further so that people will know how they can take their own steps to help shape a better environment for themselves to live in.”

PLAYA BOUND OPEN HOUSE AND VENDOR SALE AT THE CRUCIBLE – OAKLAND, CA – JULY 14

The crew over at the Crucible (heh, see what we did there?) writes to let us know about this cool thing they’ve got going this year, supporting Burners making their way to the playa.

“Playa Bound Open House and Vendor Sale
Burning Man Bootcamp Workshops
——–
Playa Bound Open House and Vendor Sale
Hello friends and creators in the Crucible community,

I am happy to annouce we are now accepting vendor applications for our Playa Bound Open House to be held on Saturday July 14, 2012 from 11am-6pm.

We held a similar event last summer and the response was so great that we decided to host a larger event for 2012. We look forward to growing and improving this event with you.

We are opening the Crucible’s doors to our Burning Man friends and family to encourage them to explore and create in preparation for the upcoming trip to the Playa. This event is juried and all vendors are encouraged to apply. We are seeking those artisans who cater to the Burning Man community and the arts, crafts, wisdom and accessories needed to attend the event in the desert each summer. This includes but is not limited to clothing & accessories, camping gear and supplies, bikes and supplies/accessories/decorations, lights, fire toys, fire tools, electronics, shade structures, solar & wind powered devices, cosmetics and more.

This event is similar to our GIFTY Holiday open house, but not as extensive with the artists and gifts created by our Crucible faculty, staff, students and community. Look for GIFTY Vendor applications to be live later this summer.

Event information is available here:
http://thecrucible.org/events/open-house/520
Vendor application forms are available here:
http://thecrucible.org/playa-bound-vendor-application

Please to not hesitate to contact with me with any questions. And please forward to any vendors who you think would be enlightened to participate in our Open House.”
