{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** Hey all, welcome to the first of our summer editions of the Jackrabbit Speaks! Oh and here’s a bit of trivia for you … the very first Burning Man took place in 1986 on San Francisco’ Baker Beach on the summer solstice — NOT on Labor Day weekend as it is now. So the folks in the office dragged our mini-Man out to Baker Beach on the solstice to celebrate a little MANiversary the other day, harkening back to the inspired act of self-expression 26 years ago that has evolved to where we are today.

Onward! As you may have read (here on the JRS, the Burning Blog, or through other news sources) the BLM issued our 2012 permit for Burning Man and increased our maximum allowable population to 60,900. We know many of you are anxious about what this may mean for tickets. While we’re currently evaluating ways we may be able to release a small number of additional tickets to relieve some of the stress in our community, please understand that we cannot sell an additional quantity of tickets that will risk exceeding our allowable population cap. Happily the new permit does give us a little bit of breathing room, though. Hang tight while we work to find the sweet spot between helping more folks get out to Black Rock City and being too precariously close to going over our allowable maximum.

In the meantime, physical tickets are going in the mail as we speak and will start to arrive in your mailboxes — together with this year’s Survival Guide — imminently. It takes a while to process that many tickets, so be patient and keep an eye out for your email notification that your ticket order has shipped. Remember: deliveries need to be signed for, so pay attention to your shipping notification.

We’re excited to announce that we’ve heard from our Art Department that there are a record 320 art projects pre-registered for the playa, with a whole lot more expected to be out there in the end (to give you a frame of reference, there were around 320 IN TOTAL on playa last year). The art registration form is now closed, but you can still bring your art to the playa. Learn about that here: www.burningman.com/installations/art_guidelines.html.

Finally, many folks have been sending us their Kickstarter widgets to promote their fundraising efforts in the JRS, and may be wondering why we aren’t publishing them. There’s a good reason, and we answer that question in the “Support a Project” section below.

Summer’s here, folks! The Man burns in 64 days!

BURNING MAN 2012 RESOURCE LISTING

Once again, we present the annual Burning Man Resource Listing. We’ve compiled a list of fellow JRS readers who are offering you their bits, bobs, wares and suchlike (and often special discounts for Burners) to help you prepare for the playa. And some of the listings stretch the concept of playa preparation a bit, it’s true, but rather than arbitrate that, we decided to interpret broadly and let you decide. Anyway, we’ve got them filtered into the following categories:

Playa Preparation Events Lights and Electronics Miscellaneous BRC Gear Playa Wear Services

Now, we hear back every year from people for whom the Resource issue strikes a discordant note in their Burning Man world. We’d like to offer a reminder that Burning Man’s principles don’t state that our community is opposed to commerce. The thing we avoid is commodification of our culture, which is quite a different thing (although the line between the two can be very fine sometimes). Commerce is a part of daily existence … including those days spent preparing for Black Rock City.

Over the years, we’ve witnessed a lot of creativity and drive from small business owners who are Burners, and we’ve seen a cottage industry grow apace with our event – those are the folks we share with you here, in hopes we can keep it in the family in the face of mass market consumerism.

Of course, you don’t *need* to buy a bunch of stuff to go to Burning Man, and what counts most is your creativity. But from Burner DIY goods on Etsy to discounts on EL wire you can use to create your crazy idea of a thing, we’d be remiss not to share these submitted links with you.

This once-a-year edition can be discarded if you prefer to find your own resources for the playa without any help. We can respect that. It’s just a link y’know, and you can choose to click it or not.

And please note that if you want to submit a listing, our submission deadline has passed, and we’re accepting late submissions.

You can find the complete list of Burning Man Resources that were submitted to us by the business owners here:

http://bit.ly/Ky899r

BURNING MAN RIDESHARE BOARD

Let’s be as environmentally conscious as we can about getting to and from the playa … carpool! If you’re looking for a ride to or from Black Rock City, or offering one, post a listing on the Burning Man Rideshare Board.

http://rideshare.burningman.com

The fewer cars we have going into Black Rock City, the better off we ALL are, as it will help to reduce the long wait times to get in and out of the city.

BEFORE JULY 20TH – REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE OF NAMES – 2011-2012 BURNERS LOST

Since 1996, an anonymous Burner has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away the previous year. This tradition continues to honor those people who have affected our Burning experiences and who participated in creating Burning Man. This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any Burners lost in the last year whose names you feel should be added to this year’s Remembrance Plaque.

Please send only their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to this address:

remembrance (at) burningman (dot) com

(**please DO NOT HIT REPLY to this newsletter to submit a name.**)

Submissions must be received by July 20th to be included on this year’s plaque. Submissions after the 20th will be added to next year’s plaque.

Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man. (Important note: the plaque is displayed at the Manbase, not the Temple, where more elaborate and personal memorials are created by participants).

May their spirits move on to the eternal playa!

BURNERLOVE BLOG

Marc writes:

“The folks who brought you BurnerMap love Burners and Burning Man so much we just had to do more!

Please welcome BurnerLove!

‘BurnerLove’ aims to help Burners find out more about other Burners, cool projects, insider news and gossip as well as exploring and cultivating the Burner spirit that makes Burning Man so goddamn f*cking awesome I giggle like a teenage girl just thinking about it.

We are creating original content 3-4 days a week up through the Burn as well as re-posts from other great Burner content we find on the web.

One of the features we are most proud of is the weekly ‘Interview a Burner’ piece – last week it was Kat of Pancake Playhouse:

In light of Burning Man’s capacity issues, Ash Ruiz, former member of Menudo, wrote the song “Burn (One Love)” created this amazing video about how to bring Burning Man to YOU. He’s created it as a gift to our community, and it really speaks to the future of Burning Man. Thank you, Ash … and enjoy, everybody.

PHOTOS OF BURNING MAN ARCHITECTURE BY ROD HOEKSTRA

This is a great set of shots … Rod says:

“I tend to focus more on the architecture at Burning Man rather than the people, so there are plenty of images of both The Man and the temple in my set. I also hang a camera off a kite and get low altitude aerial shots, this is called Kite Aerial Photography, there are a few images in that set that demonstrate that as well.”

ACADEMIC SURVEY SEEKING PARTICIPANT OPINIONS ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA

Dawn writes:

I’m a seven-time burner looking for your opinions about social/new media and how they affect our community. Your participation in a 10-15 minute confidential online survey will be a crucial part of my graduate thesis on social media, archives, and the future of Burning Man’s cultural record. 3. The Occupy movement is a laboratory for participatory democracy. It’s a massive crash course in leadership training.

i·mag·i·na·tion (-mj-nshn)

2. The ability to confront and deal with reality by using the creative power of the mind; resourcefulness
3. A plan or scheme.
4. To give rise to knowledge of possibility as perception gives rise to knowledge of the actual world.

Potentially you are a leader in your field, or have new ideas in your field. You are a scientist, an artist, a professor, an author, a historian, an analyst, an entrepreneur, a radical, a person with ideas to change the world and the want to share your ideas with a new audience, at Burning Man.

Welcome to our new expanded Speaker Series: “Occupy the Imagination” will be held between the hours of 1pm-3pm Tuesday through Sunday on the Spoken Word Stage. Proposals are now being accepted.

These talks will be brief, well structured and intimate. Talks will be 5-15 minutes long followed by a short, moderated Q & A. General Burning Man ethos and values must be upheld: no promotions of products, corporations, or political candidates

Details: In particular, we would like to make sure that the talks in this series are distinct from workshops. Occupy the Imagination is a venue dedicated to conveying ideas, events, research, intellectual endeavors, collective political movements, synthetic analyses, and/or other intellectual trajectories pertaining to the theme(s). While many such topics may lend themselves to workshops, trainings, and meditations, those activities themselves would find a better home on other stages or regions of the playa; here, your role in fostering audience participation would be to create a lively discourse through engaging the minds of your fellow burners. Proposals should include:

SEEKING ARTISTS TO PAINT CENTER CAMP CAFE PERFORMANCE STAGE BACKDROPS

It is time to clean off your paintbrushes, fire up your welding tools and dig out your idea caps for we are looking for submissions for the Center Camp Café’s Performance Stage Backdrop.

The stage itself is a fantastic venue for performers; amateur, professional and all sorts in between, to share their art with as diverse an audience as can be found anywhere in the world. The stage runs 24 hours a day 7 days of the event- and your art could frame the show.

Of course, special consideration will be give to proposals that relate to this year’s theme: Fertility 2.0

Some important information to consider in making your proposal:

The stage itself is 8 feet tall, by 24 feet wide and 16 feet deep. The proposed backdrop will be attached to a plywood ‘wall’ that forms the back of the stage. The piece itself must be weather resistant- for a) high winds, b) dust, c) heat and d) rain. The piece must refrain from obstructing the stage stairs on the ground attached to both stage left and stage right that are 3 feet wide and placed six inches out from the backdrop. There is no Fire allowed in the Café.

The deadline for proposals is July 3rd, 2012. For more information about how to submit a proposal see the below link:

BURN YOUR FORECLOSURE NOTICE OR PINK SLIP IN THE BANK OF UNAMERICA

Otto von Danger writes:

“Want to burn/blow up your home foreclosure notice or pink slip in the towering Bank of UnAmerica this year?

‘Burn Wall Street’ (the biggest honorarium art project in 2012!) will provide the glue, the building, and the mind blowing pyrotechnics; you provide the the anger, frustration, sadness, and the foreclosure notice or pink slip. We prefer that you bring your items to us on playa and give them to our volunteer tellers who will glue them to the walls of the Bank of UnAmerica on site. (Want to volunteer as a teller? Email otto (at) burnwallstreet (dot) net to sign up or for more info.) If you can’t make it to the playa, drop off or mail your foreclosure notice or pink slip before August 10th to our build location in Reno, at the Salvagery (2530 Wrondel Way, Reno, NV 89502). Please black out or cut out your social security number or any other personal identifying information beforehand!

We also need your participation in other ways. BWS consists of 5 large and highly interactive buildings (Chaos Manhattan, Merrill Lynched, Goldman Sucks, Bank of UnAmerica, and the New York Stock Exchange). If you can swing a hammer, we would love for you to volunteer to actually build it all! If you can’t come to Reno to help build before August 10th, please consider participating on playa. In addition to the volunteers we need for Bank of UnAmerica, we also need volunteers bank tellers inside Chaos Manhattan to accept receipts from donors for collateralized debt obligations (CDOs) for Burn Wall Street bucks (which were designed by David Silverman, an amazing animator and longtime Simpsons director and producer). Tellers will also “charge” other participants schwag and Burn Wall Street Bucks for outrageous things like using the pen, standing on the floor, and breathing bank air– just like banks seem to do these days.

It will be up to you if you want to ‘climb the corporate ladder’ inside the Goldman Sucks building (a giant jungle gym representing how twisted Goldman Sachs is on the inside), but our purpose with this project is not just to provide the best view on the playa (at 72 feet, the view from the penthouse office will be breathtaking, we promise). In fact, Burn Wall Street isn’t being built just to point out the ironies and flaws in our financial system. It is a very political art installation that stems from a neutral point of view with the goal of actually bringing the Occupy and Tea Party movements together.

To do this, we are asking these disparate groups to put down their Bibles and their Communist Manifestos in order to unite, share ideas and come up with actual solutions for financial reform from a combined and rational perspective. Each day at 9am at the NYSE, we will have a scheduled key note speaker who will talk from the balcony about financial reform and present possible solutions. We hope that regardless of whether you present yourself as a hippy or come dressed for success as a 1%er who jeers at the hippies that have come to protest in the park, you will listen and then join the conversation. You will, after all, be in a replicated Zucotti park with a big Bull at one end and an 8’x12′ Bill of Rights right beside it.

Finally, if you can participate by donating, we still need about $16,500 to complete this project. ALL DONATIONS are TAX DEDUCTIBLE, since this art project is being sponsored by Veterans for Peace, a 501c3 non-profit. Whether you can gift $5 or $75, any amount will help!

For more information about Burn Wall Street, including information about our talented muralists whose art will be displayed inside the Merrill Lynched building, please check us out at www.burnwallstreet.net. Your participation in the conversation along the way and before the playa is also an important part of this massive project. Please post your thoughts on our blog because we want to hear from you!

A CAVALLO MOBILE CAROUSEL / PERFORMANCE STAGE / CALLIOPE NEEDS HELP

Dan writes:

“In 2007, a 50-ft long pirate ship with life-sized rideable carousel horses, powered performance stage, and flame cannons roamed the desert at Burning Man. It was a mobile mirage, swarming with revelers as funk bands jammed out for thousand-strong crowds dancing joyously alongside as jets of flame erupted above. Many told us they had the best times of their lives on that machine, which created a zone of magical reality every time it set sail.

With your help, A Cavallo (“by horse” in Italian), will return to the desert this year, redesigned for ultra-reliability, and with new musical flame effects, playable by the riders. So it’s Kickstarter to the rescue!

We need to raise $6,000 by July 16 in order to complete the craft, and we’re offering great rewards for donating to the campaign – each a handmade piece of art – as well as a desert party cruise for groups who’ll be at Burning Man and want to celebrate on one of the baddest art cars ever built.

So take a look at the Carousel and our Kickstarter campaign, and help us make this mirage appear again! (Seriously, take a look at the drawings for this thing – unbelievable.)

THE BUREAU OF EROTIC DISCOURSE IS RAFFLING A BURNING MAN TICKET

Anile writes:

“Anile here from the Bureau of Erotic Discourse. Maybe you’ve received one of our fun buttons, read our info blurb in the Survival Guide or seen our posters in the port-a-potties. We work from a very sex-positive approach while educating our good citizens about sexual assault, how to avoid it and how to take care of each other, in our yearly ‘play-shops’ during the Burning Man event. We hope to build a city where everyone is free to explore and stretch their boundaries in a safe and strong community.

In the past all expenses have been funded entirely by the B.E.D. volunteers, but we have and amazing opportunity this year. HEY RABBIT! WHY AREN’T YOU PROMOTING MY KICKSTARTER?

A lot of folks have been sending us their Kickstarter widgets to promote in the JRS, and may be wondering why we aren’t publishing them here. Well, if you send us your Kickstarter widget (to fundraiser (at) burningman (dot) com) we’ll be happy to add it to our Support a Project page (www.burningman.com/participate/supportaproject). However, we only actively promote ones that — based on our judgment — have *significantly* high impact on a large number of people at Burning Man (like the Temple, for instance).

Basically, if we were to publish every project that was sent to us, the JRS would start to look like a big ol’ classified ad, and nobody wants that. We ask instead that people handle their own Kickstarter promotions. Look at it as an opportunity to make some new friends and connections out there.

More information about our requirements and guidelines for getting your project listed on our Support a Project page can be found here:

http://www.burningman.com/participate/supportaproject/raisefunds.html

Thanks for your understanding!

NEWBIES! SOUTH BAY MEET & GREET (PICNIC) – MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – JULY 22

Real Girl writes:

“We’re planning to BBQ-A-Newbie (but crusty ol’ veterans are welcome, too!) This will be your big chance to get edjamacated as you start thinking about packing up for the playa. Talk about Burning Man’s 10 Principles, if you can’t recite them by heart. Meet burners with waaaay too much advice, meet other virgins who are still shiny like bright new pennies, and make new friends.

LOCATION: Rengstorff Park, Mountain View – ‘W’ group picnic area off Crisanto:
http://www.mountainview.gov/civica/filebank/blobdload.asp?BlobID=3586
Rengstorff Park is under 2 miles north of the Mountain View CalTrain station if you want to walk or bike from there!
WHAT: There will be BBQ grills, so bring your own picnic and enough to share with others. Bring charcoal and BBQ tools if you plan to grill. Oh, and someone bring a lighter and some lighter fluid or something! Please make this a Leave No Trace event, as only burners can!
WHEN: Sunday, July 22nd from noon – 7:00 pm
WHY: So you can bring your friends, your family, your kids and your dogs and your Frisbees and your hula-hoops and your bocce balls. Find a camp — find a ticket — hear about art projects and playa conditions and stories that begin with, ‘This one time, at Burning Man ….’
HOW MUCH: Free! Yup, the permit has been paid by South Bay Burners, and there is no parking fee. Just come and enjoy the day with us!

For more information or if you have something special to bring, email southbay@burningman.com”
