{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** Yep, another JRS comin’ at ya. It’s that time of year when they come fast and furious, and we appreciate your keeping up with the onslaught.

If you read nothing else in this JRS, please read the posts about Traffic and Trash … these are issues that threaten the future the event, and they require our ever-growing community to step up (participation style-y!) to make ’em work. Seriously. It’s critical that you get educated, make sure your Burner friends hitting the playa are educated too, and PLAN AHEAD.

We’ve faced challenges like this before, we’re sure to face more … and we’re nothing if not adept at adapting and gettin’ ‘er done.

On another front, we’ve got some exciting news! Burning Man is now seeking a BRC Event Operations Director to take over operational responsibilities for the Burning Man event as the Founders start to focus their attention more on the non-profit Burning Man Project (www.burningmanproject.org). Interested? Know somebody who is? Sweet … see below!

So then … stay tuned for future editions of the JRS covering preparation-specific topics … there’s going to be a lot of information coming your way, and the more you know, the better your experience will be. And we all want good experiences, right? Right. So buckle up.

The Man burns in 44 days! Woot!

TRASH: CRITICAL INFORMATION ABOUT LEAVING NO TRACE — THE EXTRA PROGRAM!

The Hun wrote up a great blog post about the EXTRA program. Why do you care? Because this program facilitates a number of businesses offering 24-hour recycling and trash disposal on ALL routes from Black Rock City after the Burning Man event.

So when you’re driving down the road FREAKING OUT because you have a bunch of stinky trash and recycling in your vehicle and you JUST WANT TO GET RID OF IT, these are the places to do it! And they make it easy.

This is probably some of the most important information you’ll want to know as you’re leaving BRC (other than “where’s my brain?”), so read up!

TRAFFIC AT BURNING MAN: WHAT *YOU* CAN DO ABOUT IT

OK, think about this for a second, folks. We’ve got 60,000 people coming to Burning Man this year, and everybody has to ARRIVE and LEAVE via just one 2-lane road. Ingress and egress are always a challenge, and this year promises to be the most challenging yet. The nut of it is that YOU WILL SIT IN TRAFFIC.

At the same time, we’re all in this together (literally), and we have the opportunity to improve the situation if we all get educated, make sure everybody we know is educated, and PLAN AHEAD. Gate, Perimeter and Exodus team manager Kristy Evans wrote up a great blog post about traffic at Burning Man, and how YOU can help:

http://bit.ly/Q3bPSs

Please read it, and share it with every Burner you know will be on playa this year!

BRINGING KIDS TO THE PLAYA? GREAT! HERE’S A FAMILY SURVIVAL GUIDE!

The good folks over at Kidsville (Burning Man’s biggest village, didn’t ya know?) have created an incredibly thorough and helpful Survival Guide for Families. Bringing your kiddos out to the playa is an awesome thing to do, but it’s not without its unique challenges. This survival guide is essential reading for any playa parent.

Judi Morales Gibson, who has brought her son Dexter to 8 Burns now, co-wrote the guide, and introduces it in the Burning Blog. Check it out:

LOST AND FOUND ON PLAYA: LET US HELP YOU HELP *YOURSELF*

Check out this great advice from your friends at Playa Info:

“Every year thousands of items are lost on the playa, and many are found. Technically there is no such thing as a ‘playa gift’… but a lost item labeled with owner info positively begs to be reunited. Besides, turning in items to Lost & Found is a leave-no-trace community action.

We volunteers at Playa Info do our best to reunite items with their owners on-playa and for months after. This year we’re going on the offensive and reminding y’all of the power of prevention! With a little forethought and a few inexpensive materials, you can take steps to help yourself, others and us before you lose something.

Cameras, bikes, IDs, car keys, and whatever else you really want to keep… even tarps and tents, back packs and sleeping bags end up on our shelves. Show that you love your stuff and label it! Duct tape, luggage tags, sticky labels, permanent marker, ribbon & thread… Since Burning Man is extreme camping, not just applying a label, but also using the proper tool for the item is important. Watch this help-your-self video for more information and a little fun: LABEL IT http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7icX4Pzs8nE

Additional notes:
ON PLAYA
* Carry photocopies of your official ID and health insurance info instead of originals
* Bring extra labeling supplies (a kit?) in case you or your campmates forgot about something that matters
* No bikes in Playa Info! Park first and then come on in…

MISSING ITEMS
* Turn in lost items to Lost & Found or to a roaming Playa Info Ambassador
* Yep, we’re your salvation for airline-delayed luggage
* Nope, Lost & Found does not accept bikes. The process for dealing with lost bikes is: lostbikes (at) burningman (dot) com. Meanwhile, label and lock your bike, unkay? No promises, but seriously it helps.

Lost and Found, behind Playa Info, in the Center Camp key hole, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm daily… Happy packing burners, and see you on the playa!”

FACEBOOK GROUP VS. FACEBOOK PAGE: A GUIDE FOR THE CONFUSED

[Hat tip to Andie Grace for contributing this message …]

Burning Man’s official Facebook page can be found at www.facebook.com/BurningMan . A Page welcomes anyone to “like” it which will cause all official updates to show up in your feed. We’re pleased and a little amazed to say we have 356,000 fans on Facebook!

There is, however, a Burning Man “group” to be found there as well. This is readily found in searching for “Burning Man” – which can be troublesome for newcomers who visit it thinking it’s the official home for Burning Man on Facebook. While the group is full of lovely people and lively conversation, its moderators are opposed to the regulations we use to moderate our Page (as well as the Burning Blog — you can find these guidelines here: http://blog.burningman.com/comment-policy/). This can and has led to a little confusion when tempers flare, pranksterism flourishes, and/or personal attacks happen.

So to be clear: http://facebook.com/burningman is our official page, moderated by representatives of BMHQ, where we post official announcements etc. and invite your posts as well. The Burning Man Group on Facebook is a participant-organized, anything-goes group. This group is not moderated by the organization and not staffed by nor representing BMHQ.

We say: the internet is a big place, so let a thousand (digital) flowers bloom – but know which one is which, and choose accordingly.

PERSPECTIVES ART INSTALLATION – FROM BURNING MAN TO THE OLYMPICS

Rad! We love that project … shout out duly given! Sam writes:

“Hi Rabbits!

I was thinking that it would be totally cool if you guys could give a shout out to my friends Trey Watkins and co-artist Cameron Brown and their art project Perspectives that was featured at BM last year. The reason why is because after someone who works at the South Bank Center in London saw their project, he contacted Trey and started talking to him about re-creating it in London during the Olympics. And, after lots of planning, it is up and ‘running’ with a new twist during the Festival of the World and the 2012 Olympics! Another cool thing is Trey and Cam got some funding from BRAF so they were able to go over to London and they were able to help direct how to build it in person. I think it’s amazing that the art project that we put up at BM last year is being seen (and hopefully inspiring) millions of people traveling through London for the Olympics.

After clicking on the link below: Click on the Perspectives blocks in the map and you will see a photo of the project. The new twist is instead of having the blocks on the ground (or on the playa rather), they are now suspended over a walkway. They spell out “Dream Big” and “Ask Why” among other things.

http://world.southbankcentre.co.uk/

Right on … here’s a mention of it in BRAF’s list of currently installed projects: http://blackrockarts.org/current-projects .

PORTAL OF EVOLUTION INSTALLED FOR ONE-YEAR STAY IN RENO

Artist Bryan Tedrick has created a ton of amazing art for Burning Man over the years (see: http://bit.ly/OSXjYH), and we’re excited to announce that with the help of the Black Rock Arts Foundation (www.blackrockarts.org), his gorgeous piece “Portal of Evolution” is now installed in downtown Reno — at their City Plaza in front of City Hall, no less — for a one-year stay.

Check it out: http://bit.ly/OSXZgz

Congratulations, Bryan, and thank you BRAF for making it happen!

BRAF AWARDED SECOND GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FROM THE ARTS

Anybody in the art business will tell you that getting even ONE grant from the NEA is a huge achievement. And they’ll tell you that getting MORE than one is practically unheard of, especially in such a short timeframe. Therefore, huge congratulations are in order for the Black Rock Arts Foundation (www.blackrockarts.org) on being awarded a SECOND grant from the NEA. Kudos also to the Burning Man Project (www.burningmanproject.org) for helping land this prestigious grant.

BEHIND THE SCENES: DPW/GATE WORK WEEKEND AT THE RANCH

Brody has a grin-inducing post up on the Burning Blog … here’s a snippet:

“When people say ‘I could put on a Burning Man event, you just need to draw some roads and bring porta-potties, right?’, I wish they could see what happens behind the scenes. The amount of work that goes into the event is staggering, yet much of it is completely invisible to participants. Take for example, the work weekends up at the Burning Man Ranch that start in the spring and continue into summer.”

FINDING JESUS AT BURNING MAN

Pretty rad. Phil writes:

“Hey Jackrabbit,

An article from Christianity Today is now out. It is about our project last year: The Pillars of the Saints. The article is called ‘Finding Jesus at Burning Man.’

Here is a link to it online:

http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2012/july-august/finding-jesus-at-burning-man.html

The full article can be read if people go to the bottom of the page and look for “register”. No cost to do so. Our team is coming back this year with a large theremin called Theophony.

AWARD-WINNING BURNING MAN PHOTOS FROM BRIAN VAN TIGHEM

“Hello fellow citizen!

My name is Brian Van Tighem, a photographer from Canmore, Alberta, Canada. Last year was my first Burn, and will be returning this year (with a lot more costumes). I wanted to share some great news I just received. I submitted a series of five photographs that I took on the Playa last year to a prestigious international photography competition called PX3, Prix de la Photographie Paris. My series won a gold medal, first place in the Press (travel/tourism) category. The same series also won an Honourable Mention in the Fine Art category. I am very excited as this is my third year since graduating from photographic studies in Vancouver.

Thanks for considering sharing this with the community! See you on the Playa!

I posted the photos in a slideshow on this post:

CENTER CAMP CAFE COFFEE SHOP SELF-SCHEDULING TOOL

Want to sling coffee in the cafe this year? Yeah ya do, it’s a total blast. Witchy from the Center Camp Cafe writes:

“We’ll be really happy to see you in the desert. We want you to join us, so we can all work together to make coffee and lemonade and chai and oh-just-all-of-it while listening to music and dancing around and having a really good time while we caffeinate the masses of Black Rock City.

We have an exciting new self-scheduling system! There are only TWO steps to this new process:
1. You will fill out the “New Registration Form.”
2. Once you are approved, you will get a welcome email with your password and login. You’ll need to go to the site again to sign up for your shifts.

That’s it. No back & forth emails, just YOU scheduling the shifts that YOU want. We’ll still be here to help & you can email us at ***cafevol2012@gmail.com*** to get all your questions answered.

Keep in mind that the late night shifts are always the hardest for us to fill, so if you’re up for it please take one of those on. They’re lots of fun!

Once you register, you’ll get your welcome letter within 72 hours after you register for account.

To Register for Shiftboard:
1) Go to https://www.shiftboard.com/BMCoffeeShop/
2) Click on “New Registration” and fill out your information. (Yes, we need your contact information, and make sure to enter your phone number like this: 987-123-4567 (Shiftboard doesn’t like parenthesis, but I do)).
3) Click the “Submit Application” button in the lower left hand corner of the screen. This button is small and will try to hide from you. Don’t let that button be all sneaky like that: You are better than that button!
4) You will need to enter the 3 characters into the box under the “No-Spam Code:” section or the machine may think that you are a bot and it will not let you continue.

That’s it! It’s like magic, but with more coffee.”

FEED THE ARTISTS 2012 — GIVING IT OVER TO THE COMMUNITY

Colonel Angus writes:

“When we started (gave birth to, in fertility parlance) Feed the Artists in 2007, we said we wanted to create a program that would introduce the BM populace to the concept of “creating community through the sharing of meals,” and then step back and let the community take it from there. Over the years, FtA dinners have run the gamut from a few dust covered participants offering a meal to small groups of artists to exotic extravaganzas filled with five course meals, opera singers, and futuristic aerialists offered to hundreds of artists. Over 8000 people have been fed by over 400 theme camps during that time, so we feel we’ve been pretty successful at introducing the “Radical Collaboration” meme to the Burner community. And now, we’re ready to back out and hand it over to YOU, all the citizens of BRC!

So this year, we are proposing that EVERYONE who is bringing food to the playa plan on a little random food gifting. Instead of using our online reservations system to pre-plan meals with artist groups, WE will simply be making a lot more (gourmet) food than we need for each of our dinners, and randomly gifting out the extra food on a nightly basis, and we recommend that you all plan to do the same. Of course, if you want to invite a specific group to dinner, by all means, do it. Contact them in advance and work out the details. But for everyone else, if you can simply bring 10%, or 20%, or 30% more food than you need for yourselves, and use that extra to invite strangers to dinner, or randomly gift out the food after you’ve eaten, as we’ll be doing, you’ll create some of your most cherished Burning Man memories, and create some lifelong friends in the process. How do we know? Just ask any of the hundreds of theme camps that have participated and continue to participate in the program over the years!!!

Don’t forget, if you’re going to offer food to people outside your camp, you’ll need a health department permit, but it’s a very simple process to obtain one.

Of course we will continue to be a food resource on-playa, and our website will always contain all kinds of helpful info, like local fresh food providers in the Reno/Sparks area, but going forward we will not be offering our online or on-playa reservations systems, because we feel, in the spirit of radical self-reliance, that all of you can now make those arrangements on your own. Plus, this will make it easier for us to spread the FtA message throughout the world to the BM Regionals and beyond!

S0 we hope to see you on the playa weaving food gifting into the sequin covered, fire tinged, multi colored fabric that is Burning Man. And if you’re out on the playa during setup week, come join us nightly as our armada of art cars prowls the playa in search of groups to feed and friends to make!

For more info, visit our newly updated website at Feedtheartist.net. Now go fourth and food gift!
