{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** As the DPW works through dust, wind and heat to build the infrastructure of Black Rock City (as we speak … see Curley’s “The Big Bang” post in the Burning Blog: http://bit.ly/OXImI6), we imagine you deep in your feverish preparations for the Burn this year (we’re right there with you!).

We went out of our way to dig up some inspiring videos, photo galleries and a song(!) to include in this JRS to help get your motor running, in case it needed a jumpstart. Sure worked for us! Goose-bumpy and teary-eyed and the whole bit. We’re really really excited for Burning Man this year! You’ll really want to check ’em out, and then get packing, people!

We’re going to keep pounding this home the last couple weeks here, so bear with us … there are important preparation topics critical to the future of our event, and we need YOU to educate yourself about them and PLAN AHEAD. Read up and make sure your first-timer friends do too. (In fact, we’ve just made it even easier to SHARE this information with your social network: we’ve added share buttons on ALL preparation pages of the Burning Man website, including the Survival Guide. Just click and share!)

Traffic: www.burningman.com/traffic
Trash: www.burningman.com/trash

First-Timer’s Guide: www.burningman.com/first_timers

Finally, in case you missed it in the last JRS, we’re letting you know that this promises to be one of the dustiest years we’ve ever seen. If last year was your first year, YOU WERE BLESSED BY UNBELIEVABLY GOOD WEATHER AND PLAYA CONDITIONS. And it won’t be like that this year, no siree. Plan ahead for very dusty conditions! We love the dust, but it’s less fun when you’re not prepared for it. We got ya covered: http://survival.burningman.com/your-survival-in-brc

The Man burns in 22 days!

TICKET UPDATE

All tickets to Burning Man 2012 have now been sold and sent to their buyers. In addition, earlier this week the Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) closed, both to people putting more tickets in as well as tickets being offered for sale. We’re thrilled to say that EVERYONE that was waiting in STEP who still wanted a ticket was able to get one. Great news!

Are you still looking for a ticket? Are there any out there? Yes, there are. People’s plans change, especially around NOW, and we’re seeing and hearing about a lot of tickets changing hands in the community. Keep your eyes peeled on Tickets Offered board on the ePlaya (http://eplaya.burningman.com), your Regional discussion lists (http://regionals.burningman.com), Craigslist, and your friends and campmates for available tickets. Please remember to be careful when buying a third-party ticket, and never agree to wire money to anyone in exchange for one.

If you’re looking to offload your ticket, you can sell your ticket-in-hand, or change the name at Will Call. (here’s how: http://tickets2.burningman.com/faq.php#elsepickup). If yours is being held at Will Call and is a NON-transferrable ticket (bought through STEP or the recent Limited Sale), it is not eligible for a name change. As always, please resell tickets at face value.

Yes, it’s certainly been a challenging year for tickets given the advent of a scarcity market, and we appreciate everybody’s patience and support as we’ve navigated these new waters — we’re dedicated to continuing to work hard to improve the system for everyone in years to come.

We hope to see you on playa!

THE GUIDE TO GETTING IN AND OUT OF BURNING MAN

Jon Mitchell provides some great tips, tricks and insights about traffic into and out of Burning Man … important reading for first-timers and vets alike.

ADD YOUR EVENT, ART OR THEME CAMP TO THE PLAYA INFO DIRECTORY

Want to make sure you’re on the radar? People can find your shindig? Your art? Your theme camp? Now that everybody’s plans are starting to gel, add your gig to the Playa Info Directory. Have at it, people:

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

NEED A RIDE TO THE PLAYA? GOT ONE TO OFFER? RIDESHARE!

Wherever you’re coming from, carpool if you can! Hook up riders with rides offered on our rideshare board:

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

DRUG-SNIFFING DOGS ON PLAYA?

Yep, they’re out there. After our Law Enforcement edition of the JRS, folks asked about drug-sniffing dogs. Yes, the Bureau of Land Management and the Nevada Department of Investigations use drug sniffing dogs on playa … and it’s well within their rights to do so. For more info:http://www.flexyourrights.org/taxonomy/term/41.

Your best bet? Don’t have drugs in your vehicle, in your tent, or at all for that matter.

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

CAN WE FILM INTERACTIONS WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT?

A couple people asked whether or not it’s OK to film law enforcement interactions with participants. It’s a good question worth answering. Long story short, it’s a fine line. The First Amendment protects people who film law enforcement. But people cannot interfere with law enforcement in any way. If people videotape they need to stay out of the way and they need to NOT provoke law enforcement officers in the process.

OR-58 LANE RESTRICTIONS AND OVERNIGHT CLOSURES

Wally Glenn (who is one of our very favorite pains in the ass) generously crafted our driving directions from the Pacific Northwest (http://bit.ly/ON91Fb)back in the day. He equally generously writes to let us know:

“I am getting updating my directions for PNW Burners and I just heard from Gameshow that OR-58 has lane restrictions and overnight closures. If anyone follows the directions for Route 1 or 2, they could face significant delays getting to Black Rock City. I am advising people to take Route 4 or Route 3 instead.

Anyone in the Eugene / Springfield area of Oregon will need to seek an alternate route through Medford, then east along 140 to CA-299.

OR-58 Total Closures Near Eugene http://gwally.com/directions/000947.php

I am collating other issues and putting them up on the PNW directions page at: http://gwally.com/directions/

Don’t Fuel up in Gerlach http://gwally.com/directions/000948.php

Your ‘Don’t gas up in Gerlach’ thing may not work for PNW burners. It’s 220 miles from Cedarville to Black Rock City and back. I am advising people to consider your advice, but be practical, since in my opinion it’s dangerous to run out of gas between Gerlach and Cedarville.”

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

NEED A BIKE?

Loren writes:

“Playa Bike Transport is a service and theme camp. We collectively buy, transport, and warehouse bikes for Burners worldwide.

PRE-PLAYA, visit our website to:
• Rent a bike.
• Buy a lightly used hybrid bike.
• Arrange bike transport. Open to everyone.

IN BLACK ROCK CITY
• We run a “Bike Lounge” at 9:00 Plaza, with a bar, mist, music, shade, and tools.
• Mechanics drop in. Friendly, nurturing, and supportive, they will help anyone fix any bike, free.
• Last year, our first, we fixed over 1,000 bikes!

AFTER THE BURN, we offer:
• Bike transport, cleaning, maintenance, and storage.

VITAL INFO
Your support enables us to offer free bike repair on the playa. Our camp is presently open to new members. Mechanics please drop in!

HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE BURN

Will this be your first Burning Man? Been going for well over a decade? Two of ’em? Regardless, this project promises to serve many a Burner in their efforts to Burn well. As a resource for our community, we thought it was worth your consideration. Sean Kemp writes:

“Do you remember how ill prepared you were for your first Burning Man, despite all your friends’ best efforts? While it is true that nothing can truly prepare you for the awesomeness that is Burning Man, it is important to know what to bring, the right attitude to have, what the culture is like (and how it evolved), and what your rights are on the Playa.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Burn is a comprehensive event guide to Burning Man, detailing everything from the history and evolution of the event to traveling to and from (and around in) Black Rock City to building a camp (wiring said camp for solar power, grey water disposal, etc.) and surviving the Black Rock Desert (what to bring, the culture, how to change a bicycle tire, etc.) for a week. I have spent the last year in close collaboration with Burning Man and doing lots of painstaking research to bring you this work. Enjoy!

AWESOME AUDIO TRACK FROM SKYSPLITTER

We’re pretty wary of people sending us Burning Man-inspired audio tracks they created, cuz as you can imagine the quality varies quite widely. But this one really got us bumpin’ (maybe because we were brought up with Phil Collins, but that’s another story). Anyway, we thought you might enjoy it and might give it a play while you’re packing your gear. Skysplitter writes:

“This is my own musical dedication to the people and energy of Burning Man 2012. I created this with Ableton Live v4 in a total of about 20 hours, with a little help from a younger version of Phil Collins. “Take Me Home (Skysplitter’s Dusted Mix)” will hopefully capture a bit of the spirit of Burning Man in all its fertile glory. )'( Glad to be returning home very soon!

Peace and Love,
Skysplitter

ARCTICA SEEKING STUFFED TOY PENGUINS AND POLAR BEARS

This is serious, folks. Bobcat Queen writes:

“Arctica is looking for stuffed toy penguins and polar bears, the larger the better! These will be used for decorating the igloos as well as our trucks that pull the ice trailers in and out of the city.

We will accept these at any of the three ice stations, Arctica (behind Center Camp), Ice Cubed (in the 3 o’clock plaza) and Ice Nine (in the 9 o’clock plaza).”

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

RECYCLE! BLACK ROCK BOUTIQUE NEEDS CLOTHING DONATIONS

Eric writes:

“If you Need some freaky, funky or furry clothes at Burning Man this year, head over to the Black Rock Boutique- we’re at 3:45 and Center Camp. Since 1996, we’ve been helping the citizens of Black Rock City slip into something a little more questionable. Open Monday-Saturday. Fabulous clothing donations and volunteers accepted.

JOIN IN THE ELECTRIC PARADE!

This sounds like it’ll be amazing, right? Michael writes:

“Attention bikers, pedestrians, stilt walkers, zombies, bunnies and electric vehicles alike. Meet at the Man Thursday at 1630h if you’re ready to join “Electric Parade” and show how to get from A to B in style using human and renewable energy powered transportation. Yes. We want all you electric people to show your colors and join us when we complete a CO2 shaped route on the open playa starting from the Man. With the help of GPS tracking you can be part of a CO2 shaped “tag” as we parade our way through the open playa. Basically, we’ll all be brushes, smartphone technology the paint and Black Rock City our playground and canvas. As long as your mode of transportation is based on renewable technology we can’t wait to ROCK the dust with you! …And if you happen to provide non-stationary music (live or dj) or a cooler on wheels we’d love to hear from you!

This playa legacy is made possible by your costume donations. Visit us on playa to recycle your naughty playa wear and help others find their inner nymphet. PLEASE SUPPORT THE DREAMBOX PROJECT – YOU WON’T REGRET IT

Teddy writes:

“This year the team who made the “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” Dr Seuss video are back and this time they plan on bringing a DreamBox.

What is a DreamBox? It is a solar powered video booth that will allow you to walk into it and record a statement of your life-long dream. They then plan on attempting to make your dream come true by allowing the internet to watch it, so that viewers can contact you and lend you a hand.

Their Kickstarter page is on its last week so check it out show your support: http://kck.st/Q4KD63
