{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}
**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** We are SO VERY EXCITED about Burning Man … and guess what? IT’S RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER, PEOPLE! The art’s going up, DPW’s cranking away, the city’s starting to take shape little by little, and all we need now is YOU! Are you excited? Overwhelmed? Panicked? Procrasti-packing? OK then, you’re doing it right. We can’t wait to see you out there, all dusty … speaking of dust …
Did we mention it’s going to be dusty? Well, it’s hella dusty. Reports from the DPW crew on playa are of powerful evening wind storms lasting 2-3 hours a pop, blowing like stink, causing sustained whiteouts. Double-check the structural stability of all your stuff, folks … sh*t gets real out there. The weather can change (for the better or worse) on a dime, and either way, it pays to prepare. Wheeee! Learn how to prepare for the dust and what to do in a whiteout: http://bit.ly/NuhzRS
So there’s some fun stuff waiting for you to get involved in … including a photographic scavenger hunt, a naked stand-up comedy night, and a haiku collection service (not necessarily in that order). And of course all the amazing diversity of activities to be found in the Playa Info Directory:
http://playaevents.burningman.com
In other news, as we all know, people have been asking how they can get tickets to this year’s Burn. And as anticipated, there are now plenty of people selling tickets at face value on the ePlaya, our Facebook page, Craigslist and elsewhere. We’ll say it again: people’s plans change around this time of year, and tickets start trading hands. Still want to go? Get on ’em!
Finally, an administrative note. As Burning Man’s population grows, so do the number of post requests the Jackrabbit receives. In order to keep it all manageable, we’re going to be changing how we accept post requests. Rather than taking them via email, we’re creating a super simple online form to fill out, and we’ll start using that after this year’s event. You’ll love it, trust us. Cool? Cool.
The Man burns in 12 days!

BLACK ROCK CITY, LLC FILES LAWSUIT AGAINST PERSHING COUNTY, NEV.
Last week a lawsuit was filed on behalf of Burning Man against Pershing County, Nev., to stop the county’s attempts to impose a drastic increase in fees. This action will not affect the 2012 event.

INTELLECTUAL PURSUITS IN BLACK ROCK CITY
Want to stimulate your cerebellum? Well, you’re in luck. Burning Man is a great party, but it’s also a crucible for creativity, innovation and intellectual pursuits.
If you’re interested in checking out a workshop, talk, tour or conference, we’ve compiled a round-up of all the intellectual pursuits we know about going on in BRC this year. Turns out? There’s a lot of ’em.
And if you’re an academic working on topics around Burning Man, or want to be, join up with the Burning Nerds Mixer on playa … info here:http://bit.ly/RhTK4Z

MATERIAL CULTURE / PLAYA ARTIFACTS WANTS *YOUR* PLAYA CREATIONS!
We are a gifting community. Burning Man inspires the urge to create and give. Objects are often given spontaneously for the pleasure of giving and receiving. The artifacts and gifts we give one another at Burning Man reveal a great deal about ourselves and give us information not recorded elsewhere about participants’ way of life, spiritual values and customs. Your treasures enrich our Material Culture archive at our San Francisco office. We love to collect and archive them.
One of the functions of the ARTery in Center Camp is to collect your artifacts and gifts. We have forms for you to fill out as well as sealed bags to store your contribution. Please come by and drop off your gifts. We catalog everything post event for the archives and eventually add them to the Image Gallery.
You can also mail your contribution to our San Francisco office.

Forms can be downloaded here: http://bit.ly/TD7rz
Thank you!

SHOOTING VIDEO ON PLAYA? PLEASE FILL OUT A PERSONAL USE AGREEMENT
There’s been a bit of discussion in some circles about our Personal Use policy for cameras. Check out this blog post for more info: http://bit.ly/PrDISR. We don’t want to get all big-brother-y on you, we just want you to be aware of the policy.

PROMOTE YOUR THEME CAMP AND EVENTS WITH A PROMO ON BMIR
BMIR, Burning Man Information Radio (94.5FM on the playa and http://bmir.org on the internet) is the best way to let the citizens of Black Rock City know about your theme camp, art installation or events. We’ll be live from the playa starting 8/22 and will be where you want to be listening to find out about the weather, late breaking news you need to know and info on how the city is coming together.
If someone in your camp is an audio whiz they can send us your promos at anytime. Not sure how to record something ahead of time? No worries! J. Kanizzle, BMIR’s Production Manager has put together this handy tutorial that shows you how to download and configure Audacity, a free audio recording program. The tutorial then takes you through the basics of creating your very own announcement: http://tinyurl.com/mn55p5
Remember to let people know the basics: what, where and when. Please keep announcements under 60 seconds and please record at 320kbps.
You can put your announcements on a CD or flash drive and hand deliver them to BMIR on the playa. BMIR is located in Center Camp, 5:45 and the Esplanade, right between Ranger HQ and The Department of Mutant Vehicles.
Now if you just can’t pull this off, no worries. The BMIR Production Studio will be open every day from 12N to 4PM during the event. You can come in and we will help you record an announcement right on the playa!
Thanks, and don’t forget to pack your FM radio!

TO FLAME BUS – BUSING FROM RENO TO BLACK ROCK CITY
Are you flying into Reno and still wondering how to get to Burning Man? Don’t want to get a rental car, or drive at all? Want to help get more cars off the road, and help others get a ride to BRC too? Maybe you’re also unsure how to get home after Burning Man?
To Flame Bus is part of a national “social mobility network” that is providing bus transportation to Black Rock City from the Reno Airport.
Bus seats are still available to reserve at very reasonable prices. In fact, with just a few more reservations, they will have buses operating on a few more days during Burning Man — meaning more people can also bus out to BRC from Reno, thanks to maybe you. Return trips from BRC to Reno and SF are also available following Burning Man.
To find out further information, see the schedule, and reserve a seat — including for trips from SF and some other cities to BRC — go to their website here: www.brc.toflame.com

AIR PLAYA INFO IN THE RENO AIRPORT
Snow writes:
“Established in 2008, Air Playa Info is an off-playa bureau of Playa Info. It’s an Information service provided at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport by Burning Man and the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority during the event to assist Burners arriving from points all around the globe. We provide information such as directions to Black Rock City, local Reno-area resources, and transportation possibilities. We’ll be located near baggage claim, so please stop by and say “Hi” before you go and get all dusty!
We also dispense info via the social nets, so please LIKE Air Playa Info on Facebook and FOLLOW us on Twitter to learn more! And please tell your air-traveling friends!

CLEVER IDEA FOR STORING YOUR CAR KEYS
Tom (we shall henceforth call him “Clever Monkey”) writes to suggest:
“Buy a $10 combination-controlled (contractor’s) lockbox for attachment to your vehicle (door handle, tow loop, cable, etc.) Your vehicle key can be placed inside the lockbox and anyone in your group can open it (and your vehicle) without carrying around any keys.”

GATE MANAGER MOSHE KASHER HAS A BOOK OUT
Moshe Kasher has been working the Black Rock City Gate for years now. And he’s got a book out … we thought we’d let you know, and show our boy some love. Says Moshe:
“I have a book that just came out, “Kasher In The Rye: The true tale of a white boy from Oakland who became a drug addict, criminal, mental patient… And then turned 16”.
We hear very good things about the words printed on these pages. Look for it where you look for books.

BRAD TEMPLETON’S AMAZING BURNING MAN PANORAMAS OF BLACK ROCK CITY
Brad writes:
“New this year is a very high resolution billion pixel image of the city, and a lovely night shot from the temple.
Panoramas:

Regular sized photos:

Links are present on these photos to the galleries and panoramas from my 14 years on the Playa, and all the new shots are visible in full resolution with the Flash viewer so you can zoom in and see the faces. I recommend you click the fullscreen icon and then move around with your arrow keys and mouse wheel, on a big screen if you can — you may even feel a bit like you’re home already.)”

BURNING MAN MINI-DOCUMENTARIES FROM JASON MONGUE
Jason Mongue has some talent, folks. His videos are fantastic. Check it:
“I just released the first of a series of web episodes titled The Road to Burning Man. We all know people behind the art projects, art cars, and theme camps on the playa. They invest hundreds of hours and large sums of their own money building their art to take out to Burning Man for all to enjoy. And they largely do this without any hope or potential for financial gain. I’m personally fascinated to hear their stories and learn: Why do they do it?
Each episode will be told from the perspective of a Burner behind a particular art project/car/camp. This first episode features music producer and long time Burner David Starfire and attempts to answer the question- Why do musicians perform at Burning Man?
Future episodes will further explore the culture and experience of Burning Man past, present, and future, all told from the perspective of those who know it best: Burners. For more: http://www.jasonmongue.com/RoadToBurningManStarfire ”

THE 2012 NEVADA BURNERS PHOTO SHOOT
Burners come from different places. Most of us that live here in Nevada year-round were born in another state, galaxy, dimension, or time. We Nevada Burners stay and love it here in our wonderfully strange state — home to the Burning Man. In fact, there are more Nevada Burners per capita than from any other state in the universe.
The 2012 Nevada Burners Photo Shoot: AlieNVation!
All Nevada Burners: Please join in Black Rock City for a distinguished group photo at: 4pm SHARP on Thurdsay, August 30, at The Man (6:00 side).
Please bring all your fellow Nevada Burner kin from whatever state, nation, or planet they originally sprouted from. The group photo will be freely available to download following the Burning Man, and you can still see the photos of previous years, all here: http://bit.ly/2012NevadaBurnersPhotoShoot

BURNING MAN PHOTOGRAPHIC SCAVENGER HUNT 2012
This is fun (you’re assume the risk of whatever might come of sending in your dollar, of course … it’s up to you). Dwan writes:
“I have created a friendly competition in the form of a photography scavenger hunt for Burning Man.
Facebook page
https://www.facebook.com/BurningManScavengerHunt
Facebook event
https://www.facebook.com/events/510904948935429/
This scavenger hunt is a list of 50 items that you need to find and photograph at Burning Man. The list is here: https://www.facebook.com/notes/burning-man-scavenger-hunt/bm-scavenger-hunt-2012-item-list/169317159859816
It’s totally up to your interpretation and what you come across and your photographic skills.
To officially participate it costs only $1 and the winner, who will be selected by a public vote, will get the entire cash cow from the pool of entries. The more people who participate, the bigger the prize! Please share with friends and your camps.
Here’s how it works (the rules):
1) Provide one photo of each of the 50 items in the list
2) Create a publicly viewable online album with *only 50 photos* with each photo’s caption enumerated and titled exactly as listed in the 50 items list. No comments or additional captions posted by the entrant are acceptable.
3) All photos must be taken by the entrant
4) All photos must be taken within Black Rock City, NV
5) All photos must be taken between the dates August 26-September 3, 2012
6) If you wish to officially enter your album, payment with album website link must be submitted no later than Monday September 24, 2012 at 5pm pst. (You are also welcome to participate unofficially but will not have the chance to win the pool amount of entry $)
7) You may make your entry submission via postal mail or PayPal (directions below)
8) You agree to have all 50 of your images viewable to the public and take full responsibility for the content and activities appearing in the images
9) All official entrants will have their album links listed so the amount in the winning pool will be evident and so the public can view them.
10) Shortly after submission deadline, a finalist list of entries will be selected and available for public vote. Finalists will be selected on the basis of three things: 1) following outlined participation rules 2) interpretation of items on the list 3) photography
11) The public vote will take place for approximately one week and the winner will be based on the most votes received.
12) Burning Man Scavenger Hunt is for fun and the organizer will NOT PROFIT IN ANY WAY. All entry monies go directly to the grand prize winner.
How to enter:

PHAKESPEARE WANTS TO KNOW YOUR PLAYA NAME
The folks at Playa Shakespeare write:
“Playa Shakespeare (a.k.a. Phakespeare) wants to know your playa name! Is it River Kleenex or Britney pap Smears? Oh no she di’int!!! Let’s find out what some of the most popular playa names are? Or on the flipside what are the most wonderful, wacky, wild monikers in Black Rock City?
Fill out the simple form with your playa name, plus if you’re feeling particularly inspired, how you got your name. In 2 weeks I’ll compile a complete list and send everyone a personal email with the results – who knows maybe you’ll end up recognizing each other out there. AND if you wouldn’t mind passing the link on to friends, campmates or that certain someone with a very special playa name, it would be much appreciated!!! Thanks for participating and see you out there on the Playa soon! –Phakespeare”

BURNING MAN HAIKU PROJECT
It’s weird, but there’s always been a latent haiku fetish lingering in the Burning Man community … dunno where it all stems from, but it’s definitely there. 5-7-5, people. Anyway, Staci writes:
“After the burn last year, I was thinking of fun things to snail-mail to the lover I met on playa, and the first thing that popped in my mind was a Haiku. I typed it out on my vintage typewriter, and mailed it away…
‘We met in the dust
Maybe it was just lust, but
Chemistry it was’
He received it with so much joy, that I wanted to do more…
I thought that if everyone could gather their thoughts and experiences of Burning Man into 17 tiny syllables, it would be an enormous step in recreating the magic in default world. It would be a fun thing to look back on, share with our friends and family, and conjure nostalgia for when we are homesick.
This year, I invite you to share your experiences through Haiku. After the burn, www.projekt575.com will be ready for upload of hundreds, or thousands of photos and poems, so that everyday until the next burn, you can find a new poem to read.”

FREE HATS AND HEMP ROPE AT CAMP CONDUIT
Marta writes:
“Did you forget to pack your best Playa hat? Is the hat you brought not cutting it for sun protection or costume completion? Need just the right piece of rope for your camp? Or for fun with that special someone?
Visit Camp Conduit at 3:15 and F – we’re back this year with Even More Free Hats and Even More Free Hemp Rope! We’ll be happy to help you pick out the perfect sun blocker or accent to your costume, and then take a photo of you sporting your new chapeau. We’re also happy to teach a useful knot or two, if you’re so inclined. So stop on by for a hat and a tie!
We take hat donations, too (except for baseball caps). So if you have a nifty Playa hat that you feel needs a new home, feel free to drop it by to include in our 2012 collection.
For folks who received hats and rope from us last year, the pictures are posted (hey, better late than never, right? Riiiiiight? And just in time to help get folks jazzed for this year). Find them on our public Facebook page, in these albums:

HELP THE SACRED COW FEED THE PLAYA
“The Sacred Cow is a gourmet sit-down restaurant on the playa, now in our third year. You may remember the Sacred Cowgirl Saloon (BBQ) in 2011 or the Sacred Cow Grille (Indian food) in 2010, always at 7:30 & A.
This year our goal is to gift as much gourmet Middle Eastern food and drinks as possible, first at a special fertility feast Tuesday night in the heart of the Fertile Crescent village (at 7:30 & A), and then from our roving gourmet Moroccan restaurant art car, the Sacred Cow Hajj.
We are hoping to serve up an extra portion of deliciousness this year. Our budget is $30,000, mostly funded by our camp members. We are raising $5,000 of that through Indiegogo and would love for YOU to help:
http://www.indiegogo.com/sacredcow
We have a mouth watering selection of on-playa and off-playa gifts for those who contribute, with funding levels & perks beginning at a mere $5. Please check out our Indiegogo page and make a donation. More delicious meals on wheels in BRC in 2012!
Thank you for your support,
Your friends at The Sacred Cow”
