{============================================================} =======================INTRODUCTION========================= {============================================================}

**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/** Writing to you from Media Mecca, Center Camp, Black Rock City, USA! BRC is coming together, art’s going up, the Man’s standing, the Temple looks aMAZing, and early arrivals are starting to come in to set up the infrastructure for the big theme camps and mutant vehicles. BURNING MAN’S HAPPENIN’ FOLKS!

This Rabbit went out and cruised the playa a bit last night and we’ve got some good news. Yes of course it’s dusty and whiteouts will happen when the wind kicks up, but the playa is nicely bikeable in most places, disregarding the occasional heavy patch, depending where you are. If the wind stays down, it’s looking GREAT out here. But as always, be prepared for anything and everything.

Also on the playa conditions front… there’s a big wildfire happening west of the playa and the prevailing wind is sending the smoke right into our little town (more info on that below).

We’ve got a lot to tell you about, and little time for you to read it (because you’re feverishly getting ready to get on your way, RIGHT?), so we’ll keep this brief. We are SO excited for Burning Man this year! It’s truly shaping up to be an incredible event, and now all we need is YOU to be HERE! See you soon!

(Yes, we’re using a lot of exclamation points, we’re at Burning Man.)

If you’re unable to join us on playa this year, thanks to Camp Envy you can watch the live webcast from Black Rock City … www.ustream.com/burningman.

The Man burns in 7 days!

YELLOW BIKES: THEY’RE NOT YOURS, THEY’RE EVERYBODY’S

Here’s an important message from the Community Yellow Bike Crew!

“Hey fellow BRC citizens, I hope that you will not only read this but pass it along to other burners and burner mailing lists. This information is relevant not only to those that use the yellow bikes, but to anyone that has an interest in respectful use of community property and helping to ensure that this generous and useful program is around for years to come for those that need it.

Burning Man runs a community Yellow Bike program. A fleet of bikes are made available for participants to borrow for one-time, one-way, no-guarantees use. These bikes are painted green and (ironically) say “Yellow Bike” on them. A Yellow Bike can be taken at any time by anybody, and used to travel to their destination. Once it’s been dismounted, anybody else can take it and use it as they need to, and leave it when they arrive.

We’re here to help you with this handy dandy list of Yellow Bike DO NOT’s and DOs.

When using a Yellow Bike:

+ DO NOT decorate the bike or attempt to obscure the fact that it is a yellow bike. Decorating a yellow bike is not a form of artistic expression. It’s vandalism – pure and simple.
+ DO NOT lock the bike. These bikes are for community use and are only “yours” when you are actively riding them. If you see someone locking up a yellow bike, say something, report the incident to a Ranger (they’re easily identifiable by their khaki apparel and clearly marked vehicles).
+ DO NOT hoard a community bike. When you are not actively using a yellow bike, you MUST leave it on the street in an easily accessible location. Never bring a yellow bike into a camp or hide it to prevent others from using it. If you see a yellow bike in your camp, take it out to the road.
+ DO NOT steal the bike. This should go without saying, but each year we lose dozens of bikes. These bikes are provided for use during the event, and are not meant to be taken home with you.
+ DO NOT take parts from a yellow bike. The yellow bikes are not provided as a bank of spare parts for your bike. If you are unprepared for damage to your own bike there are several bike repair shops in the city that will be happy to help you.
+ DO NOT argue with a member of the Yellow Bike Crew if they ask for the bike. It is their job to maintain the yellow bikes for everyone’s benefit, and if they notice you are riding a bike that needs to be repaired or restored in any way you can make their job easier by simply giving it up.

When using a Yellow Bike:

+ DO leave it in an easily accessible place for other members of the community when you are not ACTIVELY riding it.
+ DO return damaged yellow bikes to designated areas.
+ DO repair it if you have the knowledge and proper tools for fixing a flat or making other minor repairs.
+ DO remove any decorations you find on a yellow bike.
+ DO wear pants! Seriously, people. We respect your right to let it all hang out in Black Rock City, but please use a little discretion when using these community resources and have some respect for the people that will use it after you.

* Note: While we encourage citizens of BRC to speak up when a yellow bike is being misused, the Yellow Bike Crew does not condone confrontational behavior or destructive actions. If your respectful attempt to intervene escalate, call a Black Rock Ranger or just leave it be.

This message has been brought to you by Deneez Nuts and the rest of the kinder, gentler DPW Yellow Bike Crew. And beer. And by the letter L.”

PERSHING COUNTY LAWSUIT VS. PERSHING COUNTY DEPUTIES

As many of you know, last week Burning Man filed a lawsuit against Pershing County, Nev. to stop the county’s attempt to impost drastic fees and regulate our event. We have received tremendous support from the community for these actions, and we’re grateful for it.

We’ve also been alerted to unnecessary vitriol expressed by members of our community. We’d like to remind our fellow Burners that while the actions taken by Pershing County officials might ignite passionate responses, it’s important to remain civil and respectful as this process plays out. Help us demonstrate that Burning Man is home to a community of givers and doers, with the best of intentions and a lot to offer our neighbors in Pershing, Washoe and Humboldt Counties.

This goes for folks at home and online as well as for those right here in BRC. Importantly, the Pershing County deputies patrolling the event are not party to this lawsuit (they are also completely independent and difference from the BLM officers onsite). They are the same deputies who worked the event last year, and Black Rock City staff are very pleased with the service and professionalism of the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office. Pershing County deputies are a trusted and valuable component of our community – they contribute daily to the safety and well being of all citizens of Black Rock City. We ask that you please treat these officers with the respect and kindness they’ve earned.

CAUTION! LAW ENFORCEMENT AND TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS

Law enforcement is out in force this year. Please keep this in mind as you travel to the event and as you enjoy yourself in Black Rock City all week long. First off, Law Enforcement are looking to PULL YOU OVER — often this can lead to the officers attempting to search your vehicle. Want to avoid getting stopped? Heed this advice:

1. Don’t do anything illegal in the first place. Period.

2. Make sure your headlights, taillights, license plate lights, and running lights are working properly.

3. Drive the speed limit AT ALL TIMES, en route to and in Black Rock City. We’ve seen a very large number of police vehicles cruising Routes 447 and 34 this year. In fact, through a collaborative effort between the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), BRC, the BLM, and Washoe County, we work to decrease the speed limits through small neighboring towns to ensure the safety and protection of their residents during such an unusually high traffic period for this rural area. That means DRIVE SLOW. Please. We know you’re excited to get here, and we’re excited to welcome you, but trust us. It’s just not worth speeding for.

4. Do not drink and drive no matter what, even once you’re on the playa. The laws in Black Rock City are the same as in any other metropolis. Importantly, do not have any open containers within reach of the driver on any motorize vehicle.

5. It is illegal to hang off of the side of a moving vehicle, this includes art cars and we have seen some citations issued for unsafe riding of art cars. Did we also mention it’s just plain dangerous and stupid? Be safe. Embark and disembark only when art cars are at a full stop, and be forewarned that if you’re driving an art car and your passengers are dangling from the sides, you may be stopped by Law Enforcement.

Please also note that you are not in Black Rock City until you reach the Greeter’s Station. Gate Road is NOT in BRC. So, keep this in mind do not begin dancing on the decks of your art car until you are actually AT Burning Man.

And a final word to the legal wise: you will be cited or arrested for possession of illegal substances. As always, you have the right to refuse search of your vehicle if the officer does not have probable cause to search.

Drive safely!

SMOKE FROM CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES AFFECTING BURNING MAN EVENT SITE

The smoke from the Rush fire in northern California is blowing over Black Rock City, and is anticipated to do so until they are able to contain the fire, which will hopefully happen early this week (if weather conditions permit). What we’re seeing on playa is the occasional inundation of smoke that can irritate your throat, lungs and eyes. People sensitive to such things should take necessary precautions, and everyone should take extra care of themselves as they arrive in BRC. Drink more water before and during arrival, take more naps, do what you can to ease in to the playa climate gently. More info:

SWIM SAFE: IMPORTANT WATER QUALITY INFORMATION FOR PYRAMID LAKE

Many Burners like to take a dip in Pyramid Lake before or after Burning Man (having gotten the appropriate permits from the Tribe, of course!). The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe writes to let us know:

“We are currently experiencing an annual algae bloom at Pyramid Lake. This is a natural phenomenon that occurs almost every year around this time. It is associated with a bloom of the blue-green algae species known as Nodularia spumigena.

All blue-green algae are capable of producing agents that may cause itching, rashes, and other allergic reactions in a small percentage of people.

Recommended Tips for Lake Recreation:

1. Avoid or minimize contact with water that is experiencing a heavy bloom conditions (e.g. algae scum, strong odors). Move to other areas where water conditions are better, including cooler water and fresher water where no algae appears to be located.
2. After swimming or skiing at Pyramid Lake, vigorously towel dry, and rinse off with fresh water as soon as practical.
3. Rinse pets soon afterwards, if they were swimming during a bloom.
4. Avoid swallowing the water, and do not allow pets to drink the water.
5. Pay attention to any beach advisory signs posted, and use common sense when deciding if it looks safe to swim or enjoy that water.
6. If any person (or animal) becomes ill after water contact, they should seek medical (or veterinary) attention. Please report any health concerns to:
Pyramid Lake Environmental Dept. – (775) 574-0101 extension 29

In other news, also be aware that there may be cattle present on the roads through the reservation. Drive carefully!”

REGISTER YOUR CAMP / EVENT / ART PROJECT / SELF IN THE PLAYA INFO DIRECTORY

Where’s my camp? And my friends’ camps? Where’s the art installation? How do we share messages? What about events not in the What Where When? Where do I find/offer a rideshare? How do I locate all experiences related to cheese? In an ever-evolving city, communication is key.

Here’s how it works: The Directory at Playa Info is a centralized repository and the most complete guide to everything that’s happening in Black Rock City. The Directory is automatically fed all theme camps, art installations and events already registered for Burning Man, and shows all participants’ manually inputted information via the self-serve computers, accessible 24/7. No, they are not connected to the internet.

So don’t stress about coordinating. Instead, consider planning to connect through The Directory. Register yourself, your camp, your art, your party, your class, your ride, your meetups. Search for what you seek in The Directory. Volunteers are available to help 9am-6pm (and sometimes beyond). Keep the good word flowing! The What Where When is also posted page by page on the inside Playa Info bulletin boards.

ANDROID VERSION OF “TIME TO BURN” APP NOW AVAILABLE

We played with the iPhone version of this last night here on playa, and IT’S SUPER AWESOME AND WELL DONE. Thank you Christopher! He writes:

“The Android version of the 2012 edition of the Time To Burn app is now available for FREE in the Google Play Store!

http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xtophersd.ttb

Enjoy, and swing by Homojitoville (8:45 and E) to say ‘Hi!’ or look for us on the Playa! – Christopher (XtopherSD)”

DOWNLOAD THE FREE THE BURNING OPERA SOUNDTRACK

Darko writes:

“The Burning Opera is gifting its original cast recording – for free – right now! It’s a digital download. Here’s the press release…

Are you into dust storms, deep playa dawns, bullhorn-wielding bunnies, and the ecstasy of burning it down to the core?

The creators of the Burning Opera – aka “How to Survive the Apocalypse” – want to offer you all a butt-spanking pre-playa gift: a freebie download of the full CD for your listening delight. It makes a perfect soundtrack for your drive to and from Black Rock City.

Just hop on over to http://bit.ly/QU7FI4 and download away! More information is available at http://www.burningopera.com

HELPFUL NAVIGATION APP

“My name is Ali and I’m contacting you cause I’ve made something that I thought would be helpful to burners. It’s a mobile navigation app, except that the main navigation tool works like a compass, where it points you to your destination and gives you distance, so you it’s perfect for places without roads. Aside from that, you can mark any place on the playa – like you and your friends’ camps – and get back to it using the navigation tool. Because of the way the navigation tool is built, it also doesn’t need an internet connection, unless you want more advanced features. The app is totally free, doesn’t even have ads, and I’m not making any money off of it. Just figured it would help you guys, and maybe get me some feedback from users. Here’s the website:http://thefalconapp.com. All the best, Ali”

MOOP WARNING ABOUT HEXAYURTS

If you don’t know what a hexayurt is, this post isn’t for you. But if you use one at Burning Man, take heed! Phoenix writes:

“Please, please do not EVEN think about cutting your yurts in Black Rock City. We all think these yurts are cool and incredibly practical for Black Rock City & way beyond. However, just cause you couldn’t get the right tape in time, or at all and could not complete the project at home, does not mean you can cut this stuff up in a place where it’s shelf life is at least 100+ years. And, it’s got loads of static electricity and you will have zero control, even on a tarp, even in a truck!

Even cut Rmax with intention to tape on the playa is dangerous. This stuff is still loose on the cut sides of your material. I’d cut & tape it in Home Depot before BRC! (and have before!).

And, if your yurt is complete & ready for packing, did you vacuum all surfaces to get them free of clinging particles?

Leave this MOOP at home where it belongs.

Mahalo”

COME JOIN CRITICAL STICKS!

This will be rad. Doug writes:

“What’s that you say? Since 2004, Camp Stickman has been bringing our EL wire childlike magic to the Playa, showing that even the most simplistic of art can come to life and spread joy throughout the land. Over the years, we’ve seen infuse their creativity into the ranks of Stickhood and we think its time we unite. Nothing more sad than a lonesome Stickman. Come join us as we dance across the darkness with musical robots. Meet at Costco Soulmate Trading Co (Rod’s Rd/4:30) at 8:30pm Thursday night for a pre-party launch, or 9:30-9:45pm on the Playa. We will start about 100 ft from the esplanade on the playa, straight out from 6:30. We’ll be on foot, route tbd. We hope you can play with us!
