ADMIN ON AND OFF

INTRODUCTION….

The man burns in 156 days…

So howdy, folks. Wanted to send this today instead of tomorrow since of course it’s going to be a busy day for we celebrants of the absurd. (St. Stupid’s Day, of course – noon, SF, Justin Hermann Plaza, dress stupid: http://www.saintstupid.com/event.html) Besides, wouldn’t want you to think a lick of this is us foolin’ you – it’s all the BRC news that’s fit to print. Fo’ reals, yo.

Now, according to the nifty new counter on Burningman.com (wowsers!) we have about 21 weeks to plan Black Rock City 2005. Egad! The theme is bringing in some gorgeous ideas, and I don’t know about you guys, but this little bunny’s anticipation is especially acute this year. Everyone else too, it seems: just check out all the ways you can participate in this week’s edition!

Just a sample: the SIGN SHOP folks are excited to open up the call for submissions to design the fonts for a section of BRC’s street signs for 2005! Details below. Y’all are also invited to participate in a fantastic new project called Synapses – an art piece created in six US cities and brought together on the playa…and destined, too, for a life beyond BRC. Wow. Aside from that, we’ve got the new and improved ePlaya to share with you, great opportunities to flex your creative or technical skills, some updates for tickets, a slew of events to share… and much much more.

OH. And plan now, my friends – new moon on the playa this year – light that bike, illuminate that art, and bring a starmap for navigation.

(One note: we tried yet another method to erase stray characters and weirdness, converting this JRS to ASCII. Please let us know, so we can figure out how to proceed. Thanks!)

Click on the countdown ticker at http://www.burningman.com (upper right corner, underlined – so you can find it anytime!) any time you’d like to know just how many camp meetings you can squeeze in before the playa.

THE NEW EPLAYA IS NOW OPEN

Yes, it’s BACK! Staff and volunteers have been hard at work, banging around under the hood on the ePlaya, Burning Man’s very own online BBS. We’re happy to announce that the ePlaya is back online, with new features, a new folder structure, and more.

The ePlaya’s a great place to seek volunteers for your project, get advice from veteran burners on your first visit to BRC, or post a message for that cowboy hat that blew away in the wind last year. (It’s worth a try, right?) Plus, it’s a great place just to get to know other burners and connect with your community.

We like to call it “Burning Man for the other 51 weeks”. Come on over and have a look around, and introduce yourself!

THE NEW TEMPLE OF DREAMS

Many of you have asked if there will be another Temple this year, and indeed there will, but not by David Best. His crew will take over the task of erecting the 2005 temple, which is designed by Mark Grieve, sculptor, carpenter, and long-standing Temple crew member. You can view some of Mark’s on-playa work here: http://tinyurl.com/6zx4r .

Here is a statement from David:

“First Temple: Michael was killed on a motorcycle. Without his death, who knows what we would be building now… All the thousands of people who used and built the temple changed my life. Oh, how I love you all. Kelly, my son, asked me ‘How can you not do it again?’ with tears in his eyes. Oh, how I love him. The phone rings, ‘What’s going on with the Temple?’ Okay, the Temple crew is building it this year. Mark Grieves is designing it, and the crew is building it. Why I’m not doing the Temple: the crew is building it. Who’s the crew? You’re the crew, and I’m behind them always. We have developed into a family, a body, a team. We love one another and build for just one person. Who that is we always find out. My one person is the woman whose son took his life one week before the event. She thought it was her fault. The man who came up to me, whose son we set free, thought it was his fault. The kid who was angry because his father killed himself when he was fourteen years old thought it was his fault. The girl whose sister jumped off the bridge thought it was her mother’s fault. Richard, who saw something no one should have seen, thought it was his fault. This year I’m going to Burning Man just to be with those people. It’s not your fault. I’m so proud of the team, and am and will always be with them wherever I am.

Why I’m not doing the Temple: the crew is doing it.” -David Best

REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE FOR BURNERS LOST

Since 1996, Burning Man has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away. We would like to carry on this tradition and honor those who have affected our Burning experiences and participated in making Burning Man happen. This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any burners lost who you feel should be added to the Remembrance Plaque. Please send their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to this address: remembrance(at)burningman(dot)com (please do not send to the jackrabbitspeaks address)

Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man from Monday (August 29th) through Friday (September 2nd).

CONTEST: YOU DESIGN THE STREET SIGNS FOR BRC 2005!

Spring is upon us and it’s time for a new DPW Sign Shop tradition. We’ve got the theme and the street names…now we need you! Time to submit your font design ideas for use on a section of 2005 Black Rock City street signs.

Instructions: Please design your font for the entire alphabet and the numbers 0 through 9. (Remember, Emergency Services personnel and everyone else in BRC need to be able to navigate with ease using our signs, so we encourage your creativity with the theme Psyche, but please keep it legible.)

If you’d like to submit a design, please illustrate a sample of the street signs “Hysteria” and “2:30”. Submissions should be in black and white .JPG (jpeg) format, and should demonstrate your font and any accompanying design elements.

Submissions are due on April 15th. If your design is selected, we will contact you with a list of the section of street signs to be done in your font. You will then have 1 week to produce the masters of your street signs, so please make sure that you have the availability to meet this schedule before submitting your design.

Our process using stencils and plywood worked great last year so we’re doing it again at our new Sign Shop Headquarters in Gerlach, Nevada. We’ll be announcing the schedule for sign production work weekends soon. Last year, the level of participation from the Black Rock Community was overwhelmingly positive. We look forward to building our newest city with you.

Please send your entries and any questions you may have to:
streetsigns(at)burningman(dot)com

Hard copy submissions can be mailed or dropped off at:

Attn: DPW Sign Shop c/o Burning Man 1900 3rd St. San Francisco, CA 94158

If you do not have email access you can call 415 865-3800 ext.114 for more information.

Thanks for your participation!

BURNING ART WORKSHOPS: CALL FOR PARTICIPATION!!

“Step right up! Step right up! Charlie Smith and Jaime Ladet here. We are extending a call for workshop participants. We have received a grant from Burning Man to build a unique project this year. The Synapses project is the first interactive sculpture of its kind. A fully collaborative, group built, and group cared-for fire caldron.

The six fire sculptures will be assembled during workshops held in the following regional areas: New York, Georgia, Texas, California, Washington, & Colorado. These sculptural sections will be built by 10-15 participants. The regional communities will in turn be the care takers of the sculptures at Burning Man and back in their community. This will create a central space where the participants from around the country will get to know each other as they tend the sculpture during its firings. After Burning Man 2005 the regional group can use this icon for their gatherings. The community retains and takes ownership of the sculpture from its creation and on through the life of the sculpture.

Participation will be filled on a first come first serve basis. If this sounds like something you are interested in, act now! Visit http://www.howhowhow.com. Select Synapses Project for the complete description, workshop schedule, and how to get involved.

Thanks, and we look forward to hearing from you all!”

PARTICIPANT GPS PROJECT – JOIN THE FUN

FireDollJamie writes:

“Do you remember that first time you watched an Indiana Jones movie and thought how cool it’d be to have your very own ‘little red line’ cataloging your travels? Ever wonder ‘just how close’ or ‘really far off’ you were to your friends on the playa one night when you said to meet up at the giant cat head at 9:00 and Esplanade? Wonder how misguided your travels were on the playa trying to find that awesome piece of art out beyond the man in a dust storm?

Well, I have an idea that could do it, but like 95% of my ideas dreamed up – for one person to do it is wildly unrealistic, terribly costly or require a team of dozens of engineers and code monkeys to build it. The idea is to store GPS co-ordinates from your adventures during the event onto a web-server and build a GPS map of the city and time-sequence display your travels. I know there is past data out there (http://home.comcast.net/~brcmap/gps/) and trying to find current data to work with in advance of arriving in the desert in ’05. The pipe dream would allow wifi co-ordinates broadcasting to a server to give all those Burner friends who can’t make it home this year a digital way to enjoy your adventures…’Hey, why is he sitting out at the 1/2 way to the trash fence at 6AM playatime? Oh, the uploaded photos at that time show there was a portable dance party going on at the Temple of Gravity…SWEET!’

Anyways….If you want to join in, suggest ideas, help out or anything of that nature, join the yahoo group discussion I’ve started at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BRC_GPS/ or e-mail BRC_GPS-subscribe(at)yahoogroups(dot)com to join.

OPEN CALL FOR ART BIKE PHOTOGRAPHS

Pompoms hot glued on handle bars, a giant paper-mache lobster, flame-painted chopper forks, and vehicles with five extra feet of height welded onto the seat and pedals – art bikes come in every shape imaginable. Have you documented art bikes at Burning Man or on your neighborhood sidewalk? Send us your images. They will be a part of:

NELA BIKES: Art meets human powered transport for a sustainable city June 3 – July 1, 2005 The Acorn Gallery (http://www.ArroyoArtsCollective.org) in Northeastern Los Angeles (NELA) will be exhibiting photos of art bikes from around the world, in conjunction with Bike Summer 2005 (http://www.bikesummer.org). Other NELA BIKES events include a bike parade, workshops, a scavenger hunt, and the Arroyo Seco Eco Ride.

As we head into a future of global warming and diminishing supplies of cheap oil, it’s high time to create and support sustainable transportation in our car crazy world.

GUIDELINES We are looking for photos of art bikes, using a very broad definition of the term. This is an open show with a tiny budget, so send us your best shots, already printed. We prefer 8 x 10 photos, matted if possible. Deadline May 15th. More info: Jennifer(at)Jmurphyart(dot)com Thank you for supporting bike culture! PS – I’ve seen bike merry-go-rounds on the playa and we’d love to have one at our festival. If you can share tips on how to design one, please contact Jennifer(at)Jmurphyart(dot)com.

EUROBURNERS….BRING HAGEY HOME!

More from Yoms and the Euroburners:

Fred Hagemeister, the man responsible for the world famous Black Rock International Burner Hostel, is to to make a rare appearance at Nowhere 2K5!

For those who know Fred, he is one of the most generous people on this planet. He throws the doors of his house open every year to burners from all over the world and helps coordinate food, drink, logistics, a theme camp as well as the ‘Reno To Playa Ride Share Project’.

This year, we’d like to bring Fred over to Europe and show him LOVE! So we are embarking on a fundraising effort called “BRING FRED HOME!”

If you’d like to help with our fundraising efforts to make sure he has a blast while over here in Europe, and thank him for sharing his home with so many BRC citizens over the years, here’s a chance to help the Euroburners show their gratitude to Hagey!!
