Dept. of Mutant Vehicles

What is the DMV?

The Department of Mutant Vehicles (DMV) is a key part of Burning Man. Our mission is to enable participants to bring and operate Mutant Vehicles and also to license vehicles for people with accessibility needs. The DMV Volunteers (the Crew) are a passionate and dedicated team committed to fostering the incredible culture of mutant vehicles at Burning Man. They work behind the scenes throughout the year and on playa to ensure that these unique works of art can roam the playa, contributing to the magic and wonder of Black Rock City.

What do DMV Volunteers do?

Pre-playa Volunteering
During the spring and early summer, the DMV Crew meet on zoom to review Mutant Vehicle Applications. Meetings are twice a week but the crew is invited to join as many or as few as they’d like. Note: to volunteer on playa you need to attend at least 2 processing meetings.

On-playa Volunteering
There are many different kinds of roles for the Crew at the DMV in Black Rock City. Roles include building and setting up the DMV, greeting and inspecting the vehicles, processing the paperwork (in an air-conditioned trailer!), and running and assisting with daily operations.

How can I volunteer with the DMV?

If this sounds fun to you and you would like to join the DMV Crew, please first go to your Burner Profile, open the Volunteer Questionnaire and check the box for DMV if it’s available. If it isn’t, write in “I would like to volunteer for the DMV Crew”. Follow that up with an email to DMVVC@burningman.org.
