2023 Black Rock City Plan

2023 Black Rock City Plan

BRC 2023 plan

In 2023, the annular streets are named:

  • Esplanade
  • Afanc
  • Bigfoot
  • Chupacabra
  • Dingbat
  • Encantado
  • Frogbat
  • Grootslang
  • Hodag
  • Igopogo
  • Jackalope
  • Kraken

New for 2023:

Center Camp Café is now simply Center Camp, a name many had already adopted for the structure. Consider Center Camp as ‘everybody’s theme camp’, or ‘the playa’s living room’.

The street names of the 2023 city plan are of fabulous beasts from mythology and folklore, reflecting the ANIMALIA art theme.

If you encounter bumpy roads, it’s good to remember that we have replaced some of the short radial streets with community paths for pedestrian and bicycle traffic only. These narrow paths are found between Frogbat and Kraken, spanning from 3:45 to 8:15.

The road circling Center Camp is named “Rod’s Ring Road” in honor of BRC site architect Rod Garrett (1936-2011).

The radial streets of Black Rock City are named by their clock position. The light blue shaded area does not specify, but rather approximates, where you will find reserved-placement camps: interactive theme camps, camps supporting art installations, and infrastructure camps. We’ve softened the edges of the reserved-placement shading here as this zone fluctuates greatly between this initial city plan and the final placed camp plan displayed at the event site.

Reserved camp space is marked on the playa with blue survey flags. Some of these plots are so large that they may appear unclaimed and available, when they actually are not. Be sure to camp outside the blue flagged zones to avoid encroaching on reserved zones and then having to relocate your camp.

For walk-in camping — located between 2:00 and 5:00 — park your vehicles in the reserved zone across K street at the flag fence, and set up your camp outside the parking flag fence.

Note: Walk-in camping is for people who drove their cars into BRC but don’t camp with their cars. You still need a vehicle pass to drive in and park before carrying your gear to walk-in camping.

The distance from the center of the innermost street Esplanade to the Man is 2,500 feet. Esplanade to Afanc Street, curb to curb, is 400 feet deep. Mid city double blocks are located between Encantado and Frogbat streets and are 450 feet deep. The remaining blocks between Afanc and Igopogo are 250 feet deep. The two back blocks between Igopogo and Kraken are both 150 feet deep.
