All Participants Are Welcome to Create Art at Burning Man!
We are excited that you want to bring your creativity to Black Rock City! Before you register your art, please read our:
- Art Installation Guidelines, which include details on what qualifies as “playa art”, challenges and limitations of building on playa, and your responsibilities as the artist
- Detailed Fire Art Guidelines if you’ll be incorporating fire in your project
- Guide to Building Safe Structures
- Criteria for Artist Good Standing, which outline how artists can best represent the 10 Principles
If you would like to bring an artwork to be placed on the open playa, please fill out and submit our Art Installation Questionnaire (available online from late February through late May). The earlier you register, the better we can support you. We’re nice. We’re here to help. We know stuff you might want to know! Please, REGISTER YOUR ART EARLY.
We encourage you to include an interactive element in your artwork, allowing participants to fully engage with the piece instead of just viewing it. Participants who explore and interact with the art may well find that they may need to perform a task in order to activate your art. Touching, climbing, entering, spinning, engaging and exploring are encouraged.

Please note that the Art Installation Questionnaire is only for registering physical art installations to be placed on the open playa or in a BRC plaza. It is not for Mutant Vehicles, performances, art for Center Camp, or art in your camp (which doesn’t need to be registered).
Did you already miss the art installation questionnaire deadline? You may still be able to bring your art to BRC and register it as a walk-in at the ARTery, as long as it satisfies the following criteria:
- It doesn’t exceed 10 feet in height
- It won’t be burned and doesn’t contain pyrotechnics
- It can be unloaded / assembled / disassembled by human power (we are not able to provide Art Support Services or heavy equipment assistance for walk-in projects)
